BINDING-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.
Application filed January 17, 1911. Serial No. 603,044.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GARRETsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binding-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to binding posts in electric machines or apparatus of various kinds and classes, and is particularly adapted for cigar lightersor to be used in places where economy of space is required.
The objects of the invention are, to provide a binding post which is simple of construction, easily installed, effective in use, comparatively inexpensive of manufacture, which is adapted to hold the wires securely without the necessity of soldering them, and in which the parts are not liable to become easily disconnected.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as are hereinafter described,
in detail, and particularly set forth inthe appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my binding post complete in connection with the side of a battery, Fig. 2 is a side elevational view showing two different applications of my binding post to a battery, Fig. 3 is a side elevational and partial sectional View showing the connection in a cigar lighter, Fig. 4 is a modified form of the binding post itself and Fig. 5 is another modified form thereof.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The bolt 1, and the nut 2 form the principal parts of my invention. The bolt 1 is an ordinary bolt threaded throughout, and provided on its one end with a head 1*. This head may be of various forms, and is provided with slots l and 1. These slots are adapted for wires and are deep enough so that the wires are embedded therein. The ends of the wires are wound around the bolt adjacent to the head with the one end thereof coming up in slot 1', and the other end in slot 1 where they are twisted together if desired. On the threaded portion of bolt 1 is provided a nut 2 adapted to screw thereon. This nut 2 is screwed up against the wires which are thereby held substantially. The lower end of the bolt may be flattened after the nut is placed thereon as shown best in Fig. l, and thereby shaped so that it may be attached conveniently. Or it may be provided on its lower end with nuts 3 and 4:, which may be placed on each side of any thing to which it is desired to attach the binding post.
Though I have shown and described, several different applications of my binding post, I do not wish to be limited to these several applications, but desire to include in my invention the construction substantially as described and set forth in the appended claims.
It will be obvious that I have provided a binding post of a very simple construction, that is easily installed, and very effective in use and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. That when the wire is placed in one of the notches in the bolt head, and bound around the body of the bolt, the loose end thereof may be conducted through the other notch of the bolt head, and the two wires be wrapped together and the nut 2 may be screwed against the wire, there is provided a good and substantial connection not easily displaced or broken, and that it can be used successively in places where economy of space is required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A binding post comprising a threaded bolt having a head provided with notches in each side adapted for electrical wires and a nut adapted to screw on said bolt and against the said wires, all substantially as set forth.
2. A binding post comprising a threaded bolt provided with a head which is provided with slots on each side adapted to receive electric wires, a nut adapted to screw on said bolt and against the said wires, and means for attaching it in the place desired, all substantially as set forth.
3. In a binding post, the combination of a threaded bolt having a head provided with a plurality of slots therein adapted for the scribe my name in the presence of two subpassago le andd embedding of electric Wires, a scribing-Witnesses. nut a a te to screw on said bolt and against s id Wires, and adjustable nut means GEORGE GARRETSON' 5 for attaching said bolt, Where desired, all Witnesses:
substantially as set forth. ABRAM B. BOWMAN,
In testimony whereof, I hereunto sub- ELMER E. RODABAUGH.
