Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-IERMANN ErorIHoRN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttle-Carriers for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of sewing machines provided with a reciprocating needle and a reciprocatory shuttle coacting therewith and movable in contact with a curved raceway provided therefor in the bed-plate, as for instance in the United States patent to VVhitehill No. 326,821, dated September 22, 1885;
and it has for its object to provide the vibra- V tory shuttlecarrier in which the shuttle is supported with means for facilitating the removal and insertion of the shuttle.
According to the present invention, the shuttle-carrier is provided with a shank which is removably secured to its vibratory supporting lever and carries a transverse fulcrum-pin upon which is pivotally mounted a tilting shuttle-ejecting lever hav ing one arm formed with a finger-piece normally arranged above the carrier-shank and another arm extending beneath the shuttlecavity of said carrier and adapted for en gagement with the body of the shuttle for lifting the same out of said cavity when the finger-piece of the first-named arm of the ejecting lever is depressed by the operator. A spring is employed for maintaining the shuttle-engaging arm of the ejector-lever in inoperative relation with the shuttle.
The shuttle-cavity is provided with a lining or facing comprising a plurality of spring arms one of which is adapted to bear against the rear end of the shuttle, another forwardly and laterally extending arm is dished to embrace the forward portion of the shuttle upon the side opposite the race way therefor in the bed-plate, and a. third is arranged beneath and supports the shuttle body and has its forward portion extended outwardly toward the raceway and slightly curved to afford practically a continuation of the lower member of the forwardly projecting forked arm so as to receive and support the shuttle point as it is introduced into the space between the carrier and raceway and, in conjunction with the raceway,
to guide the same into the fork of the car ier preparatory to the dropping of the rearward end of the shuttle into its place.
The invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a plan of the forward portion of a sewing machine bed-plate with one of the shuttle-raceway slides removed and a portion of the bed-plate broken out to expose the shuttle mechanism. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the shuttle-supporting lever, shuttle-carrier and shuttle. Fig. 3 is a front end View of the shuttle-carrier, and Fig. 4 a plan of the same with the shuttle indicated in dotted lines; and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the shuttle-ejecting lever, its fulcrum-pin and spring.
The bed-plate 1 is provided in its forward end with a common form of segmental raceway 2, and has the fixed fulcrum-stud 3 concentric therewith and upon which is mounted the tubular hub 4: of the vibratory carrier-supporting lever 5 with the angularly arranged arm 6 pivotally connected by means of the pin 7 with the forward end of a pitman-rod 8 constituting a member of the shuttle-actuating mechanism deriving its operative movements from a connection with the main-shaft substantially as represented in the Patent No. 326,821, before mentioned.
The supporting arm or lever 5 is provided along the edges of its upper side with the parallel guide-ribs 9 forming a guideway in which is secured for endwise adjustment, by means of the screw 10 passing through the slot 11 in said lever, the shank 12 of the shuttle-carrier 13 having a cavity upon the side adjacent the raceway 2 embracing the shuttle 1 1. The shuttle-carrier is provided with the depending and forwardly extending members 15 forming the bottom of the shuttle-cavity, the rearwardly and forwardly extending arm 16 forming the rear end of the cavity and the bifurcated arm 17 embracing the forward portion of the shuttle and affording the forward end of the shuttle-cavity. The shuttle-cavity is provided with a spring lining composed of a body portion 18 secured by means of fastening screws 19 to the inner face of the shuttle-cavity. This facing has a backwardly and laterally extending spring-arm 20 to receive the rear end or heel of the shuttle, and oppositely extending arm 21 with enlarged and laterally dished outer portion 22 conforming substantially with the inner face of the shuttle-carrier arm 17 and with the surface of the forward end of the shuttle. The facing has also a depending and laterally projecting arm 23 overlying the members 15 of the shuttle-carrier shuttle when the machine was in operation,
but regardless of convenience in introducing the shuttle after removal for. replaclng the bobbin or adjustment of the tension, and the forward extremity of such supporting member therefore, terminated-at such a distance from the. raceway as to leave an opening between the latter andthe lower member of *the fork embracing the pointed end of the shuttle. In introducing the shuttle it has been necessary to exercise care to avoid in-' sertion of the point of the shuttle into this space. According to the present invention,
the point of the shuttle naturally drops upon the deflecting portion 24 of the supporting arm 23, by which the shuttleis guided naturally into the cavity 22, after which'the rear end of the shuttle is permittedto drop naturally into itsplace in front of the spring arm'20. As shown in the drawings, the body 18 of the facingissecured rigidly by means of the screws l9to the back of the shuttlecavity, but the arms 20, 21" and 23 are slightly olfset therefrom and arethereby spaced slightly from the corresponding surfaces of the shuttlercavity in thecarrier.
The carrier-shank, 12 is provided at opposite edges withthe dependingflanges 25 'in which are journaled' the opposite ends of the transverse fulcrum screw-pin 26. for the shuttle-ejecting lever which is provided. with the spaced perforated ears 27 mounted upon the fulcrum-pin 26 and having a depending and laterally projecting arm 28 extending beneath the shuttle-cavity and provided with an upturned finger 29 normally arranged beneath the body of the shuttle but adapted to engage the same for lifting the shuttle out of its cavity. The ejecting lever has a second upwardly extending arm 30 passing through an aperture 32 in the carrier-shank and provided with a finger-piece 31 normally disposed materially above the carriers'hank but beneath the machine bed plate. A spring 33 is coiled aroundthe fulcrum-pin 26 and has one arm 34 r'esting against the ejector-'arm 30 and another arm 35 engaged with the shuttle-carrier,
so as to press the arm 30 forwardly into contact with the corresponding edge of the aperture 32 in the carrier-shank for maintaining the finger 29 spaced slightly beneath the body of the shuttle so as to avoid interference with the needle-thread loops passing over the same.
The'position of the fulcrum-pin 26 upon the slnittle carrier shank substantially parallel with the shuttle-cavity, and thus with the direction of movement of the carrier, permits the provision of an ejector lever of suitable size and range of movement forconvenient operation, and in a position radial with the fulcrum 0f the vibratory supporting lever so as to be easily accessible to the sewing machine operator in either extreme position of the shuttle in its traverse.
By mounting the ejector-lever directly upon the shuttle-carrier for operative movement transversely to the direction of reciprocation of the shuttle, the latter is always in register with the desired portion of the shuttle-cavity, so that the position in which the movement of the shuttle is arrested for removal does not affect the relation of the ejector-lever with the shuttle, and consequently the shuttle may be-removed -in or near either of its extreme positions after withdrawal of the respective bed-plate slide to expose the same for the purpose.
Another advantage of the present construction is that 'machines already in use may be provided with the features abox e described, to insure increased convenience in operation, by removing the original shuttle-carrier and merely substituting a new shuttle-carrierwithout otherwise altering or adding to the machine and without specially fitting the parts thus incorporated.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In a sewing-machine, the combination with a vibratory supportmg lever, of a shuttle-carrier having a shank, secured to said lever and formed with a shuttle-receiving cavity, a fulcrum-pin mounted upon and arranged transverse to the shuttle-carrier shank and substantiallyparallel with the Islnittle-receiving cavity, and a shuttlee ect1ng lever mounted upon said fulcrumpm for movement transverse to the direction of motion of said supporting lever and having one end normally disengaged from but adapted to engage a shuttle in said carrier. 1

In a sewing machine, the combination .with a vibratory supporting lever, of a shuttle-carrier having a shank secured to said lever and formed with a shuttle-receiving cavity, a fulcrum-pinmounted upon and arranged transverse to the shuttle-carrier shank, and a shuttle-ejecting lever mounted upon said fulcrum pin for. movement transverse to the direction of motion of said supporting lever and having one arm extending beneath the shuttle cavity of said carrier for engagement with a shuttle mounted therein and another oppositely extending arm terminating above the shuttle-carrier shank.
3. In a sewing machine, the combination with th bed-plate formed with a segmental shuttle-raceway, a vibratory supporting lever, a fixed fulcrum therefor concentric with said raceway, and actuating means for said lever, of a shuttle-carrier having a shank secured to said lever and formed with a shuttle-receiving cavity, and a shuttleejecting lever pivotally mounted upon the carrier-shank for movement substantially in a plane embracing said fulcrum and having an arm extending beneath said shuttlecarrier and adapted to enter the space between the same and said raceway for engagement with a shuttle contained therein.
4. In a sewing-machine the combination with a vibratory supporting lever and a fixed vertical fulcrum therefor, of a shuttlecarrier mounted upon said lever and provided with a shuttle-cavity transverse to the latter, a horizontally disposed fulcrumpin mounted upon said carrier at the side of and substantially parallel with the shuttlecavity, and a shuttle-ejecting lever pivotally mounted upon said fulcrum-pin and having one end adapted to enter said cavity intermediate its ends and to engage a shuttle therein.
5. In a sewing machine, the combination with a vibratory supporting lever and a fixed vertical fulcrum therefor, of a shuttlecarrier removably secured upon said lever for horizontal operative movement, a fulcrum-pin mounted upon said carrier in a horizontal plane substantially embracing the direction of movement of said carrier, and a shuttle-ejecting lever mounted upon said fulcrum-pin and having one end normally disengaged from but adapted to engage a shuttle in said carrier.
6. In a sewing machine, the combination with the bed-plate formed with a segmental shuttle-raceway, a vibratory supporting lever, a fixed fulcrum therefor concentric with said raceway, and actuating means for said lever, of a shuttle-carrier having a shank secured to said lever and formed with a shuttle-receiving cavity, serving in conjunction with the adjacent face of said raeeway to inclose a space conforming with the shape of said shuttle, and a spring-facing for the shuttle-cavity of said carrier formed with a plurality of yielding arms one of which extends rearwardly and laterally to engage the rearward end of the shuttle, another extends forwardly and laterally and is dished to embrace the forward end of the shuttle, and a third extends downwardly and laterally to afford a support for the shuttle and is provided at its forward end with a shuttle-point deflecting portion extending nearly to said raceway and substantially continuous with but separate from the lower member of said dished arm.
