TONSORIAL APPARATUS.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM J. CIrRoN, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tonsorial Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tonsorial apparatus, and particularly to a device for applying lather to, and for drying and for powdering the face.
The object of the present invention is to provide a compact, simple and convenient device, whereby tonsorial artists and others may apply lather to the face of a person and also to provide means whereby the face may be dried and powdered; to provide in com" bination, an apparatus whereby either warm air, steam or heated water may be delivered into contact with the face of a person, and to provide means whereby air under suitable pressure may be impregnated with water or other Huid, and means for heating the air or water, or for generating steam, as desired.
A further object is t0 provide in combination with a suitable apparatus for supplying fluid under pressure, means for intermixing with the fluid either powder or perfumery or both.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View showing the complete apparatus with the casing of the heating unit in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail showing the mixing chamber, head and the massaging member. Fig. 3 is a det-ail of the detached lathering member.
In the present embodiment of my invention, I employ a suitable receiver or tank A adapted to contain air under pressure delivered into it by a suitable pump y2 which is operated by means of a motor 3. The receiver A is adapted to be charged with air to a desired pressure, which will be indicated by the gage t and this air may be conducted through a pipe 5 into an insulated casing 6. Connected with this casing to the end of the pipe 5 is a tube, 7, surrounded by a resistance coil, 7. The tube is of small diameter, formed into coils to produce the required length of tube so that air passing through it may be heated through the instrumentality of an electrical current which is supplied to Specicaton o Letters Iatent.

the coil 7 by conductors 8 connected to suitable insulated binding posts 9, mounted in the tube 7. At the end opposite the intake of the heating tube 7 is a discharge pipe 10 to which may be detachably coupled one or more tubes 11. By turning on the switch 12 and admitting air through the valve 13 of the pipe 5, the air under pressure will traverse the tube 7 and become heated, finally discharging through a suitable massaging head, indicated generally at 14. The volume of the air discharged from the head 14 may be controlled by a valve 15 of suitable character secured thereto, and may also be entirely cut off by means of the valve 13.
Then it is desired to discharge lsteam from the massaging head 14, water or other fluid may be admitted from the supply pipe 16 into a reduced coupling 17 which is connected at a suitable point to the heating unit or tube 7. A hand valve 18 controls the admission of water through the coupling 17 into the heating unit and when it is desired to either supply heated water or steam to the pipe 11, this valve 18 will be opened the requisite degree, allowing the proper volume of water to pass through the heating tube 7. It will be apparent then, that by opening the valve 13, a blast of air will be delivered from the massage head 14; turning on the valve 18 will admit a volume of water to the tube 7 which will be ejected in the form of a mixture from the massage head 14C.
l/Vhen it is desired to heat the air or the water within the tube it is only necessary to close the switch 12, when an electrical current passing through the insulated tube 7 will generate sufficient heat to increase the temperature of the air or water or mixture passing through the tube.
In order to enable the operator to lather the face of a person, the outer end of the massage head 14 is formed with a shoulder or annulus 19 to receive the socket 20 of a substantially globular rubber pouch 21, which may be provided with a surface 22 provided with a number of resilient projections 23 and interspersed between the projections are passages or perforations 24. communicating with the hollow interior of the pouch 21. Upon one side of the pouch is formed a projection 25 provided with a small valve 26 adapted to open inwardly. The operator compresses the-pouch 21 and dips the projection 25 into soft soap, and
releasing the pouch, the consequent expansion of the same causes a small quantity of the soap material to be sucked into the cavity of the pouch and retained. Then, by turning on the valve 15 and operating the valve 1S, a spray of liquid or fluid is discharged into the pouch 21 which, mixing with the soft soap in the cavity, discharges the same through the perforations 24. If the operator desires to use heated air or water in discharging the soft soap, he has then to turn on the electric switch 12, thus heating the contents of the heating unit 7. Vhile the contents of the pouch 21 are being ejected through the perforations 2l, the tonsorial operator proceeds to rub up the face or beard with the projections 23 making a perfect mixture and good lather; at no time being required to use his hands in direct contacty with the face of the person being treated. This operation having been finished, the operator quickly detaches the lathering pouch 21 from the massage head 1l and proceeds with the usual shaving or other operations, following which he quickly applies to the shoulder 19 of the massage head a soft pliable massage member 2T having palmlike leaves 28 adapted to be applied upon the cheeks of the person being massaged. The operator then gently closes the massage palms 2S upon the face of the patient and turning on the air valve 5 and the current switch 12 gently blows a warm drying blast of air upon the face.
lVhile massaging and drying the face with the massage head 14, the operator may press a piston rod or another equivalent device 29, mounted in the massage head 14, so as to discharge powder, as 30, from ay cavity 31 into the central tube 32 of the massage head. This allows a small quant-ity of the powder 30 to be mixed with the air blast and applied to the face of the person being operated upon. Also mounted in the massage head 14 is a chamber 33 adapted to contain a perfume, either a fluid or a liquid, and by depressing a small button 34 permits a small quantity of the perfume to be injected into the discharge tube 32 at the orifice 35.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a tonsorial article enabling lthe operator to apply to the face of the patient lather either in heated or cold condition, and after suchr other steps as desired have been taken, the operator may then apply the massaging palms 2S to the face and by manipulating the several valves, provided for such purposes, may apply either steam, heated or cold air as the choice of the person being reatecl may require.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A tonsorial apparatus, comprising a tank adapted to contain fluid under pressure, a massaging implement, tubular connections between the tank and implement, said connections including a tube bent into coils to form a tortuo'us passage for the fluid, valves controlling the flow of fluid through the coils, and means for heating the coils during the passage of fluid therethrough.
2. In a tonsorial apparatus, a fluid receiver, a discharge head, connections between said tank and head, valves mounted in said connections, means for heating the connections, and means for admitting water or other fluid into said connections whereby the contents of the tank and the water will be discharged from the head as a mixture.
3. In a tonsorial apparatus, a flexibly connected massage head, valve-controlled means for supplying fluid to the head under pressure, and a massaging-device comprising a collapsible pouch connected to the head and adapted to be filled with a lather forming material, said pouch having discharge perforations whereby the lather forming ma.- terial may be discharged.
