APPARATUS FOR APPLYING GUM OR OTHER FEUID OR SEMI FLUID MATERIALS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. FURBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Applying Gum or other Fluid or Semifluid Materials, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for applying liquid material such as cement to stock and particularly to apparatus for applying the semi-fluid composition called box toe gum to the upper materials of shoes. It is the custom to apply this composition to one or more surfaces of the lining materials of the toe portion of the vamp before the shoe is assembled and lasted. The gum sets or hardens while the upper is on the last and forms a stiffened or box toe in the finished shoe.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine by the use of which an approximately uniform and, preferably, variable quantity of liquid, which will be herein referred to as gum may be presented at each operation of the machine and, preferably, may be suitably distributed over the acting face of the presenter so thatit may be applied in desired relation upon the shoe stock.
With these objects in view a very important feature of the invention consists in mechanism for feeding the liquid material, which will be herein referred to as gum which has provision for varying the quantity of gum fed at each operation of the machine. Preferably this mechanism, which is shown as comprising a plunger working in a cylinder and cooperating with a suitable valve, will have a constant or uniform stroke and provision be made whereby a portion of each charge may be diverted to vary the quantity which will be delivered. An adjustable device is provided by which the operator may govern the amount of gum diverted and so, according to the conditions prevailing, regulate the quantity of gum delivered.

A further feature of the invention consists in providing means for straining the gum to separate from it lumps and pieces of foreign matter which are not suitable to be applied to the work with the gum. To this end means is provided through which the gum is forced by the feeding mechanism and which is constructed and arranged to prevent the passage of objectionable matter. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the gum is fed to a presenter by which it is delivered and through which it is distributed upon the work. The strainer is arranged intermediate the presenter and the feeding mechanism so that it prevents material reaching the presenter which would clog it or interfere with its operation.
A further important feature of the invention is found in the novel presenter. Pref: erably this presenter comprises a chambered body portion to receive the gum from the feeding mechanism. This body portion has senter is preferably provided with raised 7 portions or projections which hold the stock away from the intervening recesses into which the perforations lead. This provides for supplying to the acting face a suitably thick layer of gum which will be taken off by the work as it is lifted from contact with the presenter. In accordance with the preferred embodiment of this invention the presenter is constructed and arranged to apply gum to two surfaces at the same time-as, for example, the adjacent surfaces of two thicknesses of shoe stock in the toe portion of the vamp, which gummed surfaces are to be laid together after being withdrawn from the presenter and will form a substantial layer of stiffening material in the toe of the shoe. The presenter is, therefore, formed, as herein shown, with two oppositely disposed side walls having cementapplying faces and these faces are shaped in approximate conformity with the contour of the toe portion of the vamp. which it is desired to coat for stiffening it. The presenter is, preferably, formed approximately V-shape in cross section, the edge being adapted to fit into the fold or seam between the two surfaces of the stock and the diverging side walls adapted to receive the stock pressed against them by the hands of the workman. It is found in practice that in the feeding operation the gum is forced out more rapidly through the holes in the lower part of the presenter than through holes of the same size in the upper part. In order to obtain the desired approximately even distribution of the gum the perforations in the walls of the presenter increase in diameter from the lower part to the upper part.
The gum hardens upon exposure to the air and when the machine is idle for a few hours it is desirable that the presenter be removed to permit it to be stored in water or to be cleaned. To this end the presenter and the neck piece by which it is joined to the reservoir are arranged to allow ready removal and, as shown, are connected to the reservoir by clamping bolts and open ended slots which permit the presenter to be withdrawn when the bolts are loosened. Preferably and in accordance with a useful feature of this invention means is provided for sealing the conduit between the presenter and the reservoir so that dripping of cement will be avoided when the presenter is removed. To this end the feeding mech anism, preferably operates a device which closes the conduit when the feeding plunger is raised. The machine herein shown is provided with an automatic stopping mechanism which brings the feeding mechanism to rest with the plunger raised and the conduit sealed. This device for sealing the conduit is herein shown as formed upon the strainer before referred to which is a part of the valve. To this end the barrel of the valve, which works in a contracted mouth of the plunger cylinder, is provided with a plurality of slits, through which the gum is strained as it is forced through them in the descent of the plunger, and with an imperforate head which closes said mouth when the plunger is raised. These and other features of the invention, including certain details of construction and arrangements of parts, will be explained in connection with the drawings in the following description and then will be pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the presenter. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the valve. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the valve and other parts associated with it in a different position from that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a detail of the clutch controller employed in the machine.
The machine comprises a head which may stand on a column 3 and includes a reservoir 4 having a circular portion in which is journaled a shaft 5 provided with a loose pulley 6 and a friction plate 8 adapted to clutch with the pulley for driving the shaft. The friction plate is actuated toward the pulley by a spring 10 and it carries an arm 12 adapted to be engaged by a controller 14 connected to the foot treadle 15 and arranged to force the friction plate away from the pulley and to stop its rotation. A spring 16 returns the controller when the treadle is freed to position to stop the shaft at the end of a revolution. The shaft carries arms 18 for stirring the gum and also an eccentric block 20 connected by a link 22 to a plunger head 24, which works in a cylin' drical chamber 25 formed in a block 26 secured to a depending portion of the reservoir. The chamber 25 communicates through openings 28 with the gum in the depending portion of the reservoir and the gum may enter the chamber through these openings. The valve has a stem which fits loosely in the central opening in the plungerhead and permits the gum to enter the chamber through that opening during the upstroke of the plunger as well as through the openings 28. The valve is retained in the plunger by the cross pin 32 and it has a beveled upper face which makes a suitably close contact with the lower face of the plunger head during the downward stroke of the latter. The barrel 35 of the Valve has a solid head on its lower end and has deep grooves 36 in its sides through which the gum is forced to pass, as indicated in Fig. 5, from the chamber 25 into the outlet 38 leading to the presenter 40. This construct-ion strains the gum so that no lumps or pieces of foreign matter are delivered to the presenter which would be liable to clog it. An escape for the gum is formed by the opening 42, see Figs. 1 and 2, leading from the lower portion of the chamber 25 into the reservoir and this opening is controlled by the screw 44, which will be set to permit more or less of the gum to flow back into the reservoir at each descent of the plunger according to the quantity it is desired to deliver to the presenter. The outlet 38 is formed in the neck of a detachable member 45 which is held to the block 26 by the thumb screws 46 extending through the open-ended slots 48, see dotted lines in Fig. 6. This connection permits the ready removal of the member 45 and presenter which it is desirable to effect whenever the machine is to be out of use for a few hours. The solid head of the valve barrel closely fits the opening from the chamber 25 into the outlet 38 so that when the plunger is raised, as it is when the machine is stopped by the clutch, escape of cement into the outlet is entirely cut off and a smoother face is presented by the block 26 and the valve on which gum will not cake when the detachable member 45 and presenter are removed.
The presenter, which is itself detachably secured to the member 45 by the taper pin 50, is formed of the shape shown in the side elevation and section in Figs. 1 and 2, having approximately semi-circular side faces and perforations 52 therein leading to the hollow interior to which the gum is supplied from the outlet 38. It has been found that in order to obtain an even discharge of gum from the different portions of the sides of the presenter the perforations 52 should be of diiferent sizes, those at the lower portion of the presenter, where the pressure is apparently greatest, being smaller than those at the upper portion of the presenter. The presenter is formed in two sections, as appears in Figs. 2 and 3, which are separable to, facilitate cleaning. If it is desired to apply cement only to one surface of stock an imperforate section may be substituted for one of the perforated sections,
In the use of the machine the reservoir is filled with gum through the opening in the top, which is covered by the lid 54, and, the parts being assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the foot treadle is momentarily depressed to release the friction plate 8 and cause a rotation of the shaft and a reciproca tion of the plunger by which the gum which had been sucked into the chamber 25 through the openings 28 and around the neck of the valve stem is forced through the s its 36 and the outlet 38 into the presenter 40, through the perforations 52 in which it is applied to the work. The work, which is shown as a shoe vamp and indicated at V in Fig. 2, comprises the upper stock and one or more thicknesses of lining and reinforcing material which are separated and held in the hand oft-he workman with the surfaces which are to be coated against the faces of the presenter so that the gum forced through the perforations in the presenter is distributed over the surfaces of the work and deposited in small masses located close enough together to form an even coating when the two gummed surfaces are folded together. The gum is strained as it passes through the slots 36 so that no lump or portion of foreign matter gets past the valve which is too large to pass through the perforations 52 in the presenter. Presenters of different sizes may be employed, according to the sizes of shoes to be gummed, and the quantity of gum delivered to the presenter at each, reciprocation of the plunger will be regulated by the position of the adjusting screw 4d with relation to the escape opening 42. The screw is withdrawn to facilitate the escape of the gum through the opening and decrease the portion that will be forced through the slots 52 to the presenter when a small presenter is being used or when a relatively small quantity of gum is to be applied, and the screw is advanced to close the opening partially or completely when greater quantities of gum are to be required to be fed to the presenter.
When use of the machine is to be discon tinued for a period long enough to permit the gum to dry upon the presenter and obstruct its liow when the machine is used again, the operator will loosen the thumb bolts 46 and withdraw the connecting member a5 and the presenter. Those parts may then be placed in water to prevent the gum hardening or they may be cleaned. It is to be noted that the machine is arranged to be stoppped with the plunger raised and that when in this position the imperforate head of the valve 35 closes completely the lower end of the chamber 25 so that no gum can leak out. The end face of the valve and of the block 42 are smooth so that they can readily be wiped clean.
The mechanism herein disclosed for starting and stopping the machine is not claimed in this application, but forms the subjectmatter of a divisional application.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir and a pre senter, of a plunger having a stroke of constant length for intermittently forcing gum from the reservoir to the presenter, and means independent of the plunger for varying the quantity of gum delivered to the presenter.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir and a presenter, of a hollow plunger for forcing gum from the reservoir to the presenter, and a valve in said plunger said machine having provision for diverting away from the presenter a port-ion of the charge moved by the plunger.
' 3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir and a presenter, of a hollow plunger for forcing gum from the reservoir to the presenter, a valve in said plunger and means arranged for adjustment to permit a portion of the charge moved by the plunger to be diverted from the presenter.
a. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir and a presenter, of a hollow plunger for forcing gum from the reservoir to the presenter, a valve in said plunger a cylinder for the plunger having an opening communicating with the presenter, and a second opening, and means for ad'justably regulating the relative sizes of the two openings.
5. In a machine of the class described the combination with a reservoir and a presenter, of a plunger for forcing gum from the reservoir to the presenter, said machine having means connected with the plunger for straining the gum as it is delivered to the presenter.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir and a pre senter, of a plunger for forcing gum from the reservoir to the presenter, and a valve in said plunger said machine having provision for straining the gum as it is delivered to the presenter.
7 In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir and a presenter, of a plunger for forcing gum from the reservoir to the presenter, said plunger having a valve the barrel of which is provided with a plurality of grooves through which the machine is constructed and arranged to strain the gum on its way to the presenter.
8. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir and a presenter, of means for feeding the gum to the presenter comprising a reciprocating plunger having an endwise passageway, a valve seated in the passageway, and a connection between the valve and the plunger arranged to permit a limited relative movement of the valve and plunger for opening and closing the passageway during the re ciprocation of the plunger.
9. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir and a presenter, of means for feeding the gum to the presenter comprising a cylinder connecting the reservoir and presenter having a contracted mouth through which the gum is delivered to the presenter, means movable with the plunger and located in said mouth for straining the gum, and a plunger for forcing the gum through the cylinder.
10. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir and a presenter, of means for feeding the gum to the reservoir comprising a cylinder connecting the reservoir and presenter having a co1itracted mouth through which the gum is delivered to the presenter, a plunger for forcing the gum through said mouth and means constructed and arranged to strain the gum during the feeding stroke of the plunger and to close the mouth when the plunger is reversely moved.
11. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir for holding gum and mechanically operated means for feeding the gum, of means movable with the plunger and arranged with relation to the feeding mechanism for straining the gum as it is ejected by the feeding mechanism.
12. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a reservoir for containing gum, a presenter to which the gum is to be fed, and mechanically operated means for feeding the gum, of a member movable with the plunger constructed and arranged to strain the gum into the presenter.
13. In a machine for applying box toe gum to the toe portions of shoe Vamps, a gum presenter having a gum applying face approximately the contour of the toe portion of the vamp and provided with perforations for delivering gum in small masses over the area of the surface to be gummed.
14. In a machine for applying box toe gum to the toe portions of shoe Vamps, a gum presenter having a gum applying face approximately the contour of the toe portion of the vamp and provided with perforations for delivering gum in small masses over the area of the surface to be gummed, combined with means for forcing the gum through the perforations.
15. In a machine for applying box toe gum to the toe portions of shoe Vamps, a gum presenter having opposed gum applying faces approximating 1n contour the surfaces to be gummed, combined with means for supplying said faces with gum.
16. In a machine of the class described, a gum presenter of V-shape in cross section and having opposed faces approximating the shape of the areas to be gummed on adjacent faces of two thicknesses of stock, said machine having provision for supplying and distributing gum over said faces.
17. In a machine of the class described, a chambered gum presenter of V-shape in cross section and having perforated side walls presenting opposed gnm applying faces approximating the shape of the areas to be gummed.
18. In a machine of the class described, a chambered gum presenter of V-shape in cross section and having perforated side walls forming opposed gum applying faces approximating the shape of the areas to be gummed, combined with means for forcing gum into the chambered presenter and through the perforated walls.
19. In a machine of the class described, a chambered gum presenter of V-shape having perforated side walls presenting opposed gum applying faces approximately the shape of the areas to be gummed, the perforations being larger in some portions of the presenter than in other portions for the purpose of securing the desired distribution of gum.
20. In a machine of the class described, a gum presenter comprising separable complemental members constructed to form a chamber between them and having perforated walls the outer sides of which form gum applying faces.
21. In a machine of the class described, a gum presenter comprising complemental members constructed to form a chamber, one of said members having a perforated wall the outer side of which is provided with projections and forms a gum applying face.
22. In a machine of the class described, a gum presenter comprising complemental members constructed and arranged to form a body portion having a thin lower edge and diverging walls the outer faces of which form the gum applying faces.
23. A machine of the class described, having in combination a reservoir, a presenter, and meansto feed gum from the reservoir to the presenter, said feeding means comprising a cylinder having an inlet, an out let, a hollow plunger and a valve, said valve having means for closing said outlet at the end of the intake stroke of the plunger.
24:. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a reservoir having an outlet, a plunger for forcing gum through said outlet, means for causing said plunger to come to rest at the end of any given reciprocation, and means connected with said plunger for simultaneously closing said outlet.
25. A machine for applying gum to the toe portions of shoe vamps having in com- -bination a presenter and means for supplying gum thereto, said presenter comprising a rigid portion having a gum applying face of approximately the contour of the toe portion of a vamp and provided throughout its extent with small perforations for simultaneously delivering small masses of gum over approximately the entire area of the surface to be gummed.
26. A machine for applying gum to the toe portions of shoe vamps having in combination a presenter, means for supplying gum thereto, said presenter comprising a rigid portion having a gum applying face of approximately the contour of the toe portion of a vamp and provided throughout its extent with small perforations for simultaneously delivering small masses of gum over approximately the entire area of the surface to be gummed, and means for forcing gum through the perforations.
27. A machine for applying gum to the toe portions of shoe vamps having in combination a rigid gum presenter of V-shape in cross section and having opposed faces approximately the contour of the areas to be gummed on adjacent faces of two layers of stock, said machine having provision for supplying gum in small masses throughout the extent of said faces.
28. A. machine of the class described having, in combination, a reservoir, a presenter, at plunger for forcing gum from said reservoir to said presenter, power actuated means under the control of the operator for imparting intermittently to said plunger a stroke of predetermined length, and means independent of said plunger for varying the amount of gum delivered at each stroke.
