`Laim Patent No. 100,427, dated March 1, 1870.
unseen-.immer scrovn The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same Be itV known that I, WILLIAM MAGILL, of Port Deposit, in the county ofCecil, and State of Maryland, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofv the same, referencerbeing had to the accompanying drawings making -a part of this This invention has for its object to cause the draugh of a base-burning stove toenter at the top, pass over the f uel in the magazine, and, by flowing down a vertical flue at the rear of the stove, to gain a position,
whence it may strike the fire from beneath.
Inthe drawingsv A is the magazine, provided with a removable cover, a, at the top, and also provided with an orifice, b, at one side, just beneath thecover a, and a hinged plate,
e, which may be tui-ned up, so as to be continuons with the wall of the magazine, and close the orifice b, or may be left in the inclined position shown in fig. 1,
and thus `form a chute' through which fuel may `begrate C, and its air-current, on issuing from the flue,-
is immediately beneath the grate, and rises directly through it.
After passing the grat-e, the draught, with its adi mixture of gas, rises through vthe chamber D, which surrounds-the magazine A, and` from the top of' the chamber D it goes into the pipes E E, which branch voff to each side, and conduct it once more downward into the hollow chamber F, at the base of the stove, 'whence itrises again by the escape-due B', and passes oil' into the chimney.
` In order to create a draught at the bottom, when the fire is kindling, the ash-pan G should be drawn out suiciently to open its orifice in the side of the base chamber F, and the damper d at the top of the flue B should be closed. This causes the draught from the upper orifice b to sweep directly across to the es# cape-pipe,rand the draught from the lower orifice td ascend through the magazine.
When the lire is well underway, the lower orifice should beclosed, and the damper d opened.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1. A base-burning stove, whose draught is introduced at one side near the top, passes laterally over the fuell in the magazine, andilows thence down the side to aposition whence it may enter lthe fire from beneath, substantially as described.
2. The Acombination of the magazine A, lines B B',
