To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Cooxn SAYER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 11 Clyde road, Redland, Bristol, England, have-invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gearing,
of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is in part to produce a flexible driving means applied gradually, essentially consisting of a wire or tube core carrying one or more wire or tube spiral springs, either or all of which may be flexible, its coils normally being apart, or arranged so as to be closed together, or drawn apart to act in compression and tension, carried by and sunk more or less into the peripheries of wheels made wholly or in part soft, with wheels or other guides to cause the belt to bear against or upon a fixed surface such as a road or track.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation with the belt, shown by two outer lines only, and one wheel traversing a surface; Fig. 3 is a section at AA, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section of an alternative periphery; Fig. 5 is a detail of the belt; Fig. 6 is a section at B-B, Fig. 5; Fig. 7 shows a modified form of belt; Fig. 8 is an enlarged cross section of the coil shown in Fig. 7 when not compressed.
In reference to the drawings, a shows the flexible wire or tube core, carrying a single spiral spring 6, Figs. 1 and 5, resting upon and sunk, as shown by the full or dotted lines, Fig. 4, more or less into the soft or elastic peripheries 0 made in one piece, Figs. 1, 2, 3, or in three pieces 0 c 0 Fig. 4:; 0 alone being soft when desired. In Fig. 4 the pieces 0 0 and 0 are secured laterally by parts cl, (i and circumferentially by ribs (Z Said parts d, d may be drawn apart by slidinglaterally upon one another, or tightened by bolts 6 in lugs 6. These parts are carried by the wheels f, f having axles g. The belt I) is guided by adjustable wheels h, whereby the belt I) may be made to travel in a path indicated by the dotted line b at its upper portion and its lower portion may be made to travel the path indicated by the dotted lines I). If the belt projects as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4., the Wheels f f may be lowered so as to make the belt touch the surface z. Figs. 7 and 8 show the belt I) when provided with a second spiral spring 6 so that the two springs form a double spiral.
It will be seen that the invention comprises a flexible means b and 1) without a joint and made endless by the ends ofthe spiral 6 being butted and welded, preferably electrically.
If the wheel f, for example, is rotated clockwise, the spring 6 will be extended on the tension side of the belt by the pull in the direction of the arrow j and compressed by the longitudinal thrust in the direction of the arrow is on the compressed side, the belt being guided on this side by the guide wheels h. It will thus be seen that a turning couple is applied to the wheel f acting at f and f thereby in part or wholly eliminating other than rotary strain on the axles g. It will be seen that the same efiects can be obtained by having two spirals, one, I), a hard wire to prevent wear, and bite upon the surface 2' more effectively, and another b close to it and filling up the spaces between its coils, but being soft to allow its play, and obtain greater grip without noise or slip on the peripheries 0 and surface i.
I claim as my invention A gearing comprising a wire core a, one or more flexible spiral springs b, 11' on the core, the spring coils being arranged so as to be susceptible of being closed together or drawn apart, guiding means for said core and coils, and wheels f, f having soft peripheries with which the coils engage, substantially as described.
