INVENTOR W////// fl WITNESSES WALTER I. MURPHY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
Application filed January 11, 1911. Serial No. 602,027.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER P. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
In a number of structures, it is difficult to find an anchorage for bolts of the usual pattern.
It is the purpose of my invention to produce an inexpensive, simple, but strong, bolt of such construction that it will not be difficult to anchor it in any class of work firmly.
In the drawingFigure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bolt secured to an angle iron; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end view of the bolt detached, and Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the bolt detached.
My improved bolt has the usual shank 1 and screw threads 2. The head of the bolt is rectangular and provided with fiat faces 3 and with sloping faces 4. The faces 3 are provided at their edges with comparatively thin fins 5, as clearly seen in Fig. 3, preferably projecting at right angles to the said faces.
In using my improved bolt in angle iron work, the web or other part of the iron is provided with an undercut or wedge-shaped opening 6, into which the head of the bolt is seated. The fins 5 are then bent down with a hammer against the sides of the angle iron, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus firmly locking the bolt against transverse movement in the anchorage opening 6, while the side walls of the anchorage opening rigidly hold the bolt against longitudinal movement. The fins serve, by reason of their hearing against the angle iron, to hold the bolt rigidly in an upright position.
While I have described my invention in connection with an angle iron, it is obvious that it may be used with equal efficiency in wood construction.
That I claim is 1. A bolt comprising a shank, terminating in a head having flat faces and sloping faces, and fins extending radially from the edges of the flat faces constructed to be bent to anchor the bolt.
2. In structural Work, the combination with a wedge-shaped opening in an anchoring member, of a bolt having a wedgeshaped head, and fins extending radially from the head constructed to be bent over against the anchor member to rigidly anchor the bolt in said opening.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
