To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-Lucny L. Bitumen- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richwood, in the county of Nicholas and State of West Virginia, have invented 'a new and useful Rod-Coupling;'and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
quently necessary to remove pumps of this character for the purpose of cleaning, thus requiring the uncoupling of the sucker-rod at each joint. In the old type of suckerrods, the sections are joined together by threaded connections. l/Vhen disconnecting the various sections, considerable dilliculty is -frequently experienced in the coupling and uncoupling of the rod sections.
The present invention aims as its prh'rntry object to provide an improved construction of coupling, which obviates the objections to the ordinary screw joint, while, at the same time, materially expediting the disconnecting of the various sections.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel formof coupling, which will prevent the possibility of the rod sections becoming uncoupled while in the well.
In the drawings, however, there is only disclosed one form of the invention, but, in
practical fields, this form may require certain alterations, to which the applicant is entitled provided the alterations are C0111- prehendcd by the appended claim.
The invention comprises further -features and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings :-Fi'gure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a sucker-rod, showing the sections thereof connected by the improved joint. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2, with the exception that the parts of the joint and the sections of the sucker-rod'are shown as dis-assembled. Fig.4. is a transverse sectional View on,1ine 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings more specifically, 1 designates a sucker-rod. In the present instance, there are only two sections 2 and 3 of the sucker-rod shown. The adjacent ends of the sections 2 and 3 are correspondingly recessed, as shown at 4 and 5, thus atltmling the tongues (5 and 7. The adjacent faces of the tongues 6 and 7 are correspondingly inclined, as shown at 8, so as to prevent the disconnection of the two sections, when the sleeve 9 is arranged as shown in Fig. 2. The tongues (5 and 7 are received by the recesses 1 and 5, in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The faces 10 and 11 of the tongues are provided with recesses 12 and 13. The recess 12, however, registers with the recess l-1 of the section 2 of the rod, while the recess 13 registers with the recess 15 of the section 3 of the rod. The sleeve 9 fits telescopically over the adjacent end portions of the sections 2 and 3 of the sin-.ker-rod, as shown in Fig. 2. The inner circumference of the sleeve 9 is provided with oppositely arranged elongated recesses 11;, adapted to receive the kevs 17. However, the ends of the elongated recesses are closed, as shown at 18, so as to prevent displacement of the sleeve 9, that is, when the sleeve 9 is rotated to the position, as shown in .Fi g. 2. The registered recesses 12, 13, 14; and 15 receive the olfset portions 19 of the keys 17, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to also prevent the disconnection of the sections of the sucker-rod. The inclined faces, however, constitute the main means for preventing the sections of the rod from disconnecting.
In assembling the coupling for the two sections of the sucker rod, the two sections 2 and 3 are brought. together, so that the recesses 1- and of the sections will receive the tongues 6 and 7, as shown in Fig. 2. After the sections 2 and 3 are thus assembled, the keys 17 are adjusted, so that their portions 19 will enter the recesses 12, 13, 14, and 15. Subsequently the sleeve 9 is passed over the section 3 of the sucker rod, until the keys 17 enter the recesses 16, by way of the openings 16", shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 1. After the sleeve is thus arranged, a partial rotary movement is imparted to it, until the closed portions, as shown at 18 of the recesses 16, are brought in front of the large ends of the keys 17, which will hold the various parts of the coupling assembled. To. disconnect the parts of the coupling a partial rotary movement is imparted to the sleeve 9 in a.
reverse direction, until the keys 17 are in registration with the openings 16*, after which the sleeve may be pushed back off of the key 17, so that the keys may be. removed, after which the two sections :2 and 3 may be separated.
From the foregoing, in connection with the drawings hereunto annexed, it will be noted that a novel form of rod coupling has been produced and one which will permit the disconnecting of the rod sections, without experiencing very much difiiculty, and which will also preventthe gradualdisconnecting of the sections of the rod while in the well. This novel form of coupling has been found to be practical, simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination, a pair of rod sections having their adjacent end portions provided with correspondingly shaped recesses an d tongues, the tongues and the rod sections having registering recesses, keys having ottset portions extended into the registering recesses, a sleeve fitted telescopically over the joined ends of the rod sections and the keys, said sleeve having inwardly projecting annular flanges to prevent longitudinal movement of the sleeve, said sleeve being partially rotatable to bring the flanges adjacent the ends of the keys.
