Description

N. S. PETERMAN.
BURIAL GASKET. APPLICATION FILED MAB. 16, 1910.

NATHANIAL S. PETERMAN, OF GARWIN, IOWA.
BURIAL-GASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
Application filed March 15, 1910. Serial No. 549,465.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIAL S. PETER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garwin, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burial-Gaskets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in burial caskets, the object being to combine in one casket four styles of caskets, whereby any one of said styles can be used.
Another object of my invention is to provide a casket which is exceedingly cheap and simple in construction, and one in which the cover, the lid and the cover molding are so connected together that they will be held in their proper position, and yet be capable of being moved so as to form different style Gaskets.
A still further object of my inventionl is to provide the cover with a steel frame to which are hinged the sections of the cover molding, whereby said molding and the lid sections carried thereby will be supported firmly when the cover is thrown into an opened position.
A still further object of my invention is to provide novel means for holding the respective hinged sections of the casket in a closed position, so that all danger of the same becoming unfastened accidentally, when in use is prevented.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of combination, construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this specilicationz-Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved burial casket showing the molding sections swung outwardly. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the cover raised, the side dropped and one section of the lid and molding swung outwardly.
In carrying out my improved invention= I employ a body A, which may be of any style and design desired, and is provided with a hinged side section B, which can be drop ed as shown in Fig. 2 and is held in a close position by fastening members clearly shown, so as to prevent the sides from dropping down accidentally, and said side is also locked by the cover as will be hereinafter described.
Pivotally mounted on the body A is a cover C which comprises a fixed section D and a movable section E, the movable section E being carried by a rectangular metal frame F which is connected to the fixed section C by screws as clearly shown, and said fixed section carries a catch C', coacting with a keeper C2 mounted on the upper edge of the hinged side B.
Secured on the frame F are hinges G carrying molding sections I, the end sections carrying hooks I adapted to coact with eyes I2 carried by the side section, so as to fasten the molding sections together firmly, and the lid C3 of the fixed cover is rabbeted as shown at G4, for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
Hinged to the two side sections are movable sections J and K having beveled coacting edges so as to hold the meeting edges and to form a tight joint, and the inner edges of these lid sections rest on the reduced portion formed by the rabbet Gr", and
the outer edges rest on the end molding section which is provided with a keeper L adapted to receive a fastening member L carried by the lid section K so as to completely lock the lid sections in a closed position.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a burial casket which combines four styles in one, as by opening the lid sections the shrine style is formed, then by dropping the molding section, the half-couch style is formed, and by closing the molding sections and the lid sec tions and by opening the cover, the full couch style is formed which allows the hinged side to be dropped.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
As a new article of manufacture, a burial casket comprising a body having a hinged side section, a cover hinged to said body, said cover being formed of a movable section and a fixed section, a rectangular metal frame secured to the fixed section, the lid of the fixed section being provided with a reduced portion, molding sections hinged to said locking said lids in a closed position toA frame carrying means for locking said secgether With means carried by the cover for tions together, lid sections hinged `to said locking said cover to the hinged side sections. l0
molding sections having beveled coacting NATHANIAL S. PETERMAN. edges, the inner ends of said sections fitting Titnessesz in the reduced portions of the fixed cover, CHAS. J. BELKNAP,
and means carried by one of saidolids for O. WILI-IELMI.
`Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner o'f Patents,
