Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whomt may concern:
Be it known that we, DAvn) WALD, OTTO C. BRiTsoH, and MAX TAIGMAN, all citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sewing-l Machine Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new and mproved attachment for a power sewing machine.
It has been found in practice that the motor for driving individual power sewing machines, and the controller therefor, are generally in the way, or at least, not easily detached and changed.
An object, therefore, of this invention is to provide a new and improved attachment for sewing machines, whereby the motor, and controller therefor, will be inan unexposcd, unobtrusive position, and whereby either or both the motor and controller can be )readily detached for the purpose of re, newing or exchanging.
4 A further object of this invention is t0 provide a device which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, readily attached and detached, and in which the controller and the brake for the motor will 'be simultaneously operated, to render the one active and the other inactive.
These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more full described hereinafter and particularly set orth in the claims. A
.Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of .this specilication, in which similar characters of reference indicate vcorresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation; Fig. 3 is a-perspective view of the shelf for supporting the motor and controller; and Fig. 4 ris a detail. perspective view of the means for locking the treadle in position'.
Referring more particularly to the-separate parts of ,thisnvention as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, 1 indicates .Y 4a sewing-machine stand, which may be of any suitable form, but preferably comprises a table top 2, supported by a frame 3 having a pair of side pieces, only one of 4, 1s
shown, connected at the bottom by a bar 35, which is preferably cylindrical in form. This side piece 4 is shown in the form' of a frame having an enlarged central opening, extending across which there is provided a shelf 5, which is shown detached, in Fig. 3. This shelf is provided with downwardlyextending bifurcated lugs 6, which are adapted to detachably engage bolts 7 on the vertical extensions of the side 4. Inasmuch as the shelf 5 is provided with rabbets or cut-out portions 8, extending from the-lugs 6, the shelf will extend through the opening of the side 4, on both sides thereof.
Supported upon the shelf 5 and detachably secured thereto in any well known manner, as by means of bolts 9, there is pro-V For the purpose of controlling the supply' of electricity to the motor` 10, there is provided a controller 13, which may be of any suitable character, such as that described and claimed in our Patent No. 984,327, granted February 14, 1911. This controller may be supported on the shelf 5 in any suitable manner, as ibybeing suspended therefrom by means of brackets 14, which are secured to the shelf in any suitable manner, as by means of bolts 15. The mechanism of the controller 13 is operated by a controller lever 16, which projects outwardly from the casing of the controller. In order that t-he lever 16 may be manipulated with the feet while the hands are busy moving the material being sewed, it vis connected to a treadle 17 'in any suitable manner, ,as by means of a link 18. This link is preferably made ad'ustable, so as to allow for a limited relative movement between the treadle 17 and the lever 16, when desired. This may be done in any suitable manner, as by dividing a link 18 into two sections, and securing the two ends of the sections detachably together by means ofa clamp 19.
For the purpose of stopping the motor quickly when the current is shut olf, there is provided a brake 20, which may be of any suitable character, and is shown in this in- .stance to be provided with a kshoe 21 of any suitable material, such as leather, whichis adapted to projectv into the groove of the pulley 11, at apoint where the belt 12 does not contact therewith. This shoe 21 is shown as being connected to a lever 22 pivotally supported intermediate its ends in any well known manner, as by means of a bracket 23 adjustably connected to the stand 1 in any suitable manner, as by being rotatably supported in a journal 241, and secured in its adjusted position by a set screw In order that the brake may be manipulated simultaneously with the manipulation of the controller lever 16, they are connected together by means of a link 26, the relative points of connection of which, with respect to their pivot points, are such that the brake will be thrown in when the controller is thrown out, and vice versa. In order that the brake may be automatically applied, and the controller 13 cut oli' when the operator removes the pressure of his feet from the treadle 17 there is provided a spring 27, which is connected to the frame at one end, and to the lever 16 at the other end. The treadle 17 pivotally rests on the bar 35, and is detachably connected thereto by means of bifurcated lugs 2S, and is held from sidewise movement on this bar by means of locks 29, which are shown in the form of collars adjustably mounted on the bar 35, and each having a lug 30 adapted to project over the treadle in such a manner as to prevent its being lifted and still permit its oscillation on the bar 35. These locks 29 are secured in any position of adjustment by set screws 31.
The utility of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description. When the operator desires to run the machine, the treadle 17 is manipulated to depress the lever 16 against the tension of the spring, so that the current is thrown on to the motor l0 lthrough the controller 14:. The brake is simultaneously released and held off the pulley 11 as long as the operator presses on the treadle 17. As soon as the operator desires to stop, and he releases his pressure on the treadle 17, the spring 27 will automatically cut off the current by means of the controller 13, and simultaneously apply the brakoto the pulley 11, so that the machine will stop almost instantaneously.
It will be seen that the motor can readily be detached from the shelf 5 by loosening the bolts 9 and some of the bolts which connect the lever 22 to the link 26 and the bracket 23. The'e-ontroller can likewise be removed from the shelf 5, or, if desired, both the controller and the motor can be bodily removed with the shelf, incase it is desired to repair or replace them. f It will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and efficient device, the parts of which are readily attached and detached and assembled together. .Y
While we have shown one embodiment of our invention, we do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations and modifications which may come within the scope of t-he appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a stand having end supports, of a detachable shelf removably connected to said support-s, a motor supported on said shelf, a controller for said motor suspended from said shelf, and means for operating said controller. A

The combination with a stand, of a detachable shelf removably connected to said stand, a motor on said shelf, al controller depending from said shelf, an adjustable brake for said motor, a controller lever for said controller, connect-ions between said lever and said brake, said connections comprising a link having one end pivoted to said controller lever and t-he other end pivoted to said adjustable brake lever, whereby said brake and said lever will move together, and a treadle for operating said lever.

The combination with a stand, having a side formed with an -opening therein, of a horizontal shelf detachably connected to said stand and projecting through said opening to either side of said side, a motor detachably connected to said shelf, a controller for saidfmotor, detachably connected to said shelf, and means for operating said controller.

a pulley connected to said motor, a brakeshoe for said pulley, a lever for operating said brake-shoe, means for detachably and pivotally connecting said brake-shoe to said stand, a lever for manipulating said controller, a link detachably and pivotally connected to said first-mentioned lever and to said second-mentioned lever, a treadle for operating said second-mentioned lever, and a spring 'for operating said second-mentioned lever.
5. The combination with a stand, having a side formed with an opening therein, of a horizontal shelf detachably connected to said stand and projecting through said opening to either side of said side, a motor detachably connected to said shelf, a controller for said motor, detachably connected to said shelf, means for operating said controller, a pulley connected to said motor, a brake-shoe for said pulley, a lever for operating said brake-shoe, means for detachably and pivotally connecting said brake-shoe to said stand, a lever for manipulating said controller, a link detachably and pivotally'conneeted to said lirst-mentioned lever and to said second-mentioned lever, a link, adjustable as to its length,- connected to said second-mentioned lever, a treadle adapted to manipulate said second-men-Y tioned link, and a spring adapted'to manipulate said second-mentioned lever.
6. The combination of a stand, a lmotor carried by said stand, a controller positioned below said'motor, a brake shoe adapte-d to cushion the movement ofthe rotatable parts of said motor, a lever having one end pivoted to said brake shoe, alink pivoted to the opposite end of said lever, a controller lever pivoted intermediate its length to said link, a treadle-controlled link pivoted to one end of said controller lever, whereb the actuation of said treadle-controlled link will automatically actuate said controller i and remove said brake shoe out of engagement with the movable parts of said lever.
-7. The combination of a stand, a motor carried by said stand, a controller positi'oned belowsaid motor, a brake shoe.
adapted to cushion the movement of the rotatable parts of said m-otor, a lever having one end pivoted to said brake shoe, a link pivoted to the opposite end of said lever, a controller lever pivoted intermediate its length to said link, a treadle-controlled link pivoted to one end of said controller lever, whereby the actuation of said treadle-'controlled link will automatically actuate said controller and remove said brake shoe out of engagement with the movable parts of said lever, and a pivoted bracket supporting said first-mentioned lever, whereby the tension of said shoe on the movable parts of said motor, is regulated.
