TYPE-WRITER RIBBGN-SPOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 19, 1911.
Application med January 26, 1911. serial No. 604,720.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZAE E. PRICKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Type-Writer Ribbon-Spools, of which the following is a specification.
My ,invention relates to improvements in typewriter ribbon spools.
Heretofore typewriter ribbon spools have ordinarily been made with the metal disks of the spool rigidly fixed to the hub porgood deal of diiiculty is experienced in affixing the endv of the ribbon to the fastener at the hub of the spool on account of the relatively large diameter of the spool disks and narrow space between them. And in the old construction, it is entirely impossible to remove or apply the ribbon without unwinding it from end to end or rewinding it.
The object 'of my invention is to provide an improved construction of typewriter ribbon spool by which the objections or dificulties heretofore experienced may be entirely overcome, and which at the same time will be of a simple and efficient construction,-
capable of being cheaply manufactured.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result as herein shown and described the same consisting essentiallyy in providing the hub of the spool with means for removably attaching one of the disks thereto, so that the ribbon in coiled form may be slipped onto or 0E of the hub and to facilitate the fastening of the inner en d of the ribbon to i the pawl or holding devlce with which the hub of the spool is furnishedfor securing the end of the ribbon thereto.
My invention also consists iny the` novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a p an view of a typewriter ribbon spool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of. Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is avdetail lan view of the removable disk of the spoo Figf 4 is a sectionon line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of the spool, showing the pawlv or holder for the end of the ribbon on the hub of the spool and Fig. 6 is a 4detail view showing the end of the ribbon with the customary hook thereon for securing it to the hub of the spool.
In the drawing, 1 represents the hub4 of the spool, 2 the disk permanently secured or riveted to one end o the hub, 3' the removable disk of the spool, 4 the fastener lips or lu s with which theend of the spool is pro vi ed for removably securing the disk 3 thereto, the disk being provided with diametrically opposite slots or notches 5 for the fastener lips 4 to ass through, and a portion 6 of reduced diameter forming a shoulder 7 for the spool disk 3 to t against. After the removable spool disk 3 is applied to the hub, it is given a slight axial rotation or turning movement to cause the fastener lips 4 on the hub to overlap the inner edge of the spool disk surrounding the opening 8 1vlvhlich receives the reduced portion 6 of the The hub is provided with the customary recess Ior cut-away portion 9 and pawl or fastener 10 to receive the hook 11 at the inner end ofthe ribbon 12.
To secure 'the hook 11 over the notched portion 13 of the pawl or fastener 10 in applying a ribbon to the spool, it is only necessary to give the removable disk 3 a' slight turn to bring the fasteners 4 on the spool into registry with the notches 5 of the disk 3 and then the disk may be removed and the end of the ribbon very easily hooked around the pawl or other fastener 10, and then the ribbon may be wound upon the spool inthe old way, or it may be slip ed in coiled form over the end of the hub an then the removable` disk 3 is applied.
The outer face of the lips or fasteners -14 is preferably flush with the outer end face of the reduced end portion 6 of the spool hub so that the fasteners 4 will not inter erewith the ap licationof the spool' to the machine either ace down.
To remove an old or worn out ribbon from myfimproved spool it is only necessary to ive the removable disk 3 a partial turn and then take it off the hub, when the old ribbon may be very easily and quickly dropped off or removed from the spool hub without unwindlng the ribbon from end to end, as has heretofore been required.
1. In a ty bination wit a spool disk and hub permanently secured together, said hub provided with arecess and a ribbon hook of a removable disk on the opposite end of the face of. the reduced end of the hub, and a hub, the hub having at said opposite end removable flat disk of uniform thickness fastener lips, and the removable disk having having notches adapted to be brought into notches to receive said fastener lips, substan and' out of registry with said lips of the hub 5 tiallyvas specified. v l by the turning of the disk, substantially as 15 In a typewriter ribbon spool, the comspecied. j bination with a spool disk and hub per- ZAE E.
