ENGINE-MUFFLER. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 6, 1910.
Serial No. 580,731.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LONNIE C. SMoo'r and WVILLIAM R. MAs'rERsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Hillsboro, in the county of Hill and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Engine-Mulllcrs', of which the fol lowing is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in engine niulllers, and has for its object the provision of a mutller which will effectually silence the noise caused by the exhaust of an engine without offering any material impediment to the escape of the gases such as would produce a backpressure A further object is to provide an engine mulller in which the gases will be caused to traverse a spiral path at the same time undergoing a whirling motion transverse With their spiral direction of travel.
Finally the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable, and etlicient, and comparatively easy to construct, and also one which will not be likely to get out of working order.
lVith these and various other objects in view, my invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation an example of which is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is'a longitudinal sectional view taken axially through the mutller, the coils of the mutller being shown inelevation. Fig. 2 is a similar sectional view in which the mutller coils are shown in section. Fig. 3 is a view of the inlet extremity of the mulller, the cylinder head being removed from said extremity.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing wherein like letters of reference designate similar parts in all the figures, the letter A denotes the cylindrical casing of the mulller, B represents the inlet head of the casing, and C the outlet head thereof. Within the casing is positioned a spiral muffler coil consisting of a number of sections D, each of which constitutes one-half of one of the mufller coils. A spiral passage E is formed for the gas by the conjunction of the sections D.
The first three sections adjacent to the muffler inlet are shown each provided with a central aperture F. This permits the gas when entering the mufiler casing under high pressure to pass in part through the apertures F so as to expand into the first few sections of the mutller, causing the pressure tobe lowered more quickly than would be the case if the apertures F were not provided. tions form conical deflectors at their'centers whereby the gas will be deflected into the passageway E. In passing through this duct the gas will receive not only a spiral motion, but a whirling motion also due to tlhe annual shape of the cross section of-said cuct.
The sectional construction above described permits a mufiler of a great number of sizes to be built up from the same type of section. It is obvious that the coils of the muffler may be made of one continuous sheet of metal if desired, instead of employing the herein described construction Without d parting om the principle of the invention.
That we claim is:
1. An engine muffler, comprising a casing and a plurality of semicircular sections arranged therewithin to form a continuous spiral passage through the casing, the sections adjacent to the mutller inlet having central apertures, and the remaining sections having closed conical centers with their apices toward the muffler inlet.
2. An engine mutHer comprising a casing and a plurality of semi-circular sections arranged therein to form a continuous spiral passage through the casing, said passage being annular in cross section the sections adjacent to the mutller inlet having central apertures, and the remaining sections having closed conical centers with their apices toward the mufiler inlet.
