FLOURSIFTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST J. JENEVEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Bruno, in the county of San Mateo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F lour- Sifters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in flour-sitters.
The object of my invention is to provide a flour-Sifter which can be operated by the use of but one hand of the operator and which is simple in construction and rapid in operation.
My invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing, described in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing aforesaid, Figure 1 is a vertical section of said flour-sifter, Fig. 2 is a section on line :r-a: of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 00 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a View of a modification of that part of said flour-sifter which agitates the device in operation.
In the figures 1 represents a casing having near its bottom a screen 2, and the said cylindrical casing 1 has in its wall openings or bearings 3 wherein is mounted the agitator 4, consisting of a shaft extending centrally thereto and a plurality of curved wires or bands secured endwise thereto as shown. In practice I prefer to form said wires as continuations of the twisted wires 5 and 6 forming a worm 8. At the outer end of said worm the said wires are turned outwardly as shown at 18 to rest between fingers 10 in which such turned ends are contained, the same having a bearing 9 for said worm. Outer handle 11 is secured to the inner ends of the slideways 12 as shown, said slideways consisting of curved bands secured ontwardly to the casing or container 1. An inner handle or follower 14 is slidably mounted within said slideways and has a central oblong opening penetrated by worm 8. A band spring 13 is centrally secured inwardly to the handle 11 and the-outer ends thereof engage the inner surfaces of handle 14. The handles 11 and 14 are preferably semi-circular, having their channels facing inwardly. separates said handles. Bent guards 17 are secured outwardly to handle 14 for protecting the fingers of the user from injury in the operation.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the spring 13 is omitted.
In using the device the thumb of one hand encircles handle 11 and the fingers thereof encircle handle 14, compression of the hand causing the agitator 4 to rotate and release of the inner handle 14 causing the return of the agitator to its former position. Agitation in container 1 through operation of the device causes the flour therein to be sifted in form so as to readily descend through the screen 2 and thence outwardly through the lower opening of container 1.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 bars 22 are substituted for bands 12, and upon said bars are mounted sleeves 20 connected by handle 24, positioned inwardly, and outer handle 25 connects said bars at their outer ends. The inner ends of said bars are secured to container 1, worm 8 and helical spring 16 being operated and mounted in manner similar to that shown in Fig. 1.
My device can be made readily and cheaply by reason of the fact that it is largely constructed of wire. The handle 14 extending widely and horizontally from its center enables all fingers, except the thumb, of one hand to be used in its reciprocating movement, while the springs 13 add to the resiliency of the actuating movement and prevent tilting of said handle in its move ment.
I claim:
1. In a flour-Sifter, a container, slideways secured outwardly to said container, an agitator having curved wires and transversely and movably mounted in said container, a wire worm extending from said agitator outwardly through the wall of said container and between said slideways, an outer handle secured inwardly to the outer ends of said slideways; an inner handle slidably contained in said slideways and having a central opening penetrated by said worm; a spring encircling said worm between said handles and having one end thereof secured to said worm, and a spring .centrally and inwardly secured to said outer handle and having arms inclining outwardly and inwardly engaging said inner slidable handle.
2. In a flour-sifter, a container, slideways secured outwardly to said container, an
agitator having curved wires and transversely and movably mounted in said container, a wire worm extending from said agitator outwardly t-hrough the Wall of said container and between said slideways and being integral With said wires; an outer handle secured vinwardly to the outer ends of said slideways; an inner handle slidably mounted in said slideways and having a central opening penetrated by said worm; a spring encircling said worm between said handles and having one end thereof secured to said worm, a spring centrally and inwardly secured to said outer handle and having arms inclining outwardly and inwardly engaging said inner slidable handle, and guards secured to said inner handle and extending in proximity to said worm.
