DROP-DOWN SMALL-ARM.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM BAKER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at S7 Snow Hill, Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop-Down Small-Arms, of which the following is a speciication.

The object of this invention is to Iprovide an improved construction and arrangement of drop down small arms with a view to obtaining a compact and simplified action, the parts being few in number and readily controllable.

In order to more clearly explain this my invention I have appended hereunto an illustrative sheet of drawings, upon which are figures and numbers of reference, similar numbers referring throughout the several views to the same thing or part, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the mechanism constituting this my invention. Fig. 2 is a part sectional plan view on line -B, showing more particularly the striker in relation to the opening in the vertical barrel. Fig. 3 is a front view of the barrel, and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on line C-D. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bolt showing also the relative position therewith of the cranklike pegs upon the lower end of the barrel, when the latter is brought to the central position; Fig. (3 is a similar view, but showing the bolt lever in the unlocked position.

10 is the locking bolt lever, and 11 is the vertical barrel of the said lever, which is suitably tit-ted in the action body 12.

13 is the striker, which may be in one with the hammer bar 14C, or be made as a separate piece, in which latter case, the hammer would be suitably carried so as to strike it.

15 is an opening made in the barrel 11 through which the striker 13 can pass to the body face at 16. This opening is made sulficiently large to permit of the required part rotative movement of the barrel, when the striker is occupying the said opening. Hence the striker and also the barrel are able to occupy a central position in the gun.

17 is the locking bolt for locking the breech after the well known manner. This bolt is also opened and closed after the well known manner by means of the peg 18 in the barrel 11, engaging with the slotted hole or opening 19 in the bolt.

I further provide upon the underside of the barrel the crank peg 20, and also the slot 21 in the bolt, into which the said peg en-` gages. This opening 21 is so shaped relative to the peg 20, that the lever 10 when pushed to the one side (as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 6) fully permits the action ot' the peg 18 to unlock the breech, but when the lever 10 is let go, and the bolt 17 is returned to its locking position by the spring 22, then the said peg 2O locks itself, so to speak, in the opening 21 in such a position as to insure the lever 10 being retained in the correct central position.

The rear end of the hammer bar 14 is pivoted at 23 to the lever 24, which in its turn is pivoted at 25 to the frame. Carried from the strap 26 is the fixed support 27, between which and the collar 28 on the hammer bar, is placed the main spring 29. The trigger 30 is put into bent at 31 with the lever 24: and retained in bent by the spring bar 25. The hammer is put to cock by means of pulling back t-he terminal 32 on the end of the lever 24.

That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In drop down small arms, the combination of a striker, a locking bolt, a rocking lever and barrel for operating said bolt, a hammer bar arranged at the rear of said striker, a rear lever connected to said bar and provided with an operating terminal arranged in the rear of the rocking lever, for putting the hammer to cock, and a trigger for controlling said rear lever.

In drop down small arms, the combination of a striker, a locking bolt, a rocking lever and barrel for operating said bolt, a hammer bar arranged at the rear of said striker, a rear lever connected to said bar and provided with an operating terminal arranged in the rear of the rocking lever, for putting the hammer to cock, a trigger for controlling said rear lever, and a spring arranged between the locking bolt and said trigger for acting upon both.

In drop down small arms, the combination of a striker, a locking bolt, a lever and barrel for operating said bolt, said barrel having a laterally enlarged hole therein for the passage of the striker, a hammer bar arranged at the rear of said striker, a rear lever connected to said bar and provided with an operating terminal arranged in the rear of the rocking lever, for putting the hammer to cock, and a trigger for controlling said rear lever.

In drop down small arms, the Combination of a striker, a locking bolt having an elongated slot therein, a rocking lever and barrel for operating said bolt, a peg on said barrel engaging directly With the bolt to move the same, a second peg engaging directly With said slot for limiting the move- 'ments of said bolt, a hammer bar larranged at the rear of said striker, a rear lever oonneeted to said bar and provided with an operating terminal arranged in the rear of the rocking lever, for putting the hammer to cock, anda trigger for controlling said rear lever.

5. In drop down small arms, the -oombination of a striker, a looking bolt hav-ing an elongated slot, a 'lever vand barrel for operating said bolt, said barrel having a -laterally enlarged hole for the passage of said striker, a peg on said barrel engaging directly with the bolt to move the same, a

second peg engaging directly With said slot for limiting the movements of said bolt, a hammer bar arranged at the rear of said striker, a rear lever connected to said bar and provided With an operating terminal arranged in the rear of the rocking lever,
