SPRING-SEAT CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 25, 1910. Serial No. 557,488.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. HIGBY, a residing at Big Sandy, in the county of Chouteau, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Seat Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wagon seat supports, more particularly to devices of this character employed in the larger class of farm and freight wagons and like vehicles, and has for one of its objects to provide a simplyconstructed device of this character whereby the seat may be effectually supported and adjusted upon the wagon body as required.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily detached from or attached to a wagon body and without altering the construction of the latter.
JVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a wagon body and an end view of a conventional seat with the improved device applied, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail illustrating the construction of the locking portion of the device.
The improved device may be applied to any of the usual forms of wagon bodies, and for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a conventional form of this character in which 10 represents a portion of one of the side members of the body, 11 the seat, and 12 one of the springs of the seat, the latter being supported upon a bar 13 at the lower side. Four of the improved devices will be employed two at each end of the seat,
but as they are precisely alike two of the devices only are shown.
The improved device comprises a U-shaped strap member 14 bearing over the upper edge of the body 10 and extending inside and outside of the same. At its inner terminal the member 14 is outturned as shown at 15 to support the spring bar 13, while the outer portion of the member 14 is forked as shown at 16 and with a toothed segment 17 extending from its upper end. Pivoted at 18 between the forked portion 16 of the member 14 is a clamp arm 18 having a terminal toe 19 at its lower end to engage beneath a stop bar 20 which is attached to the side of the body 10- At its upper end the arm 18 is slotted to pass over the segment 17, and located within the socket is a spring actuated pin 21 which engages the teeth of the segment 17 andthus holds the arm 18 in its adjusted position. By this simple arrangement it will be obvious that the arm 18 may be firmly clamped with its toe portion against the body 10 and beneath the stop bar 20 and thus lock the member 14 and its attachments to the body. By forcing the arm 18 outwardly the strain will be applied between the member 14 and the body 10, and by moving the arm 18 inwardly the member 14 and its attachments will be released, as will be obvious. By this simple means the clamp device may be firmly locked to the body 10 in any desired location by readily adjusting along the body so that the seat may be located at any desired point, or the attachments removed entirely, as may be preferred.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and is of great strength and utility. The improved device is wholly of metal, and can be cast or wrought as may be preferred.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a member adapted to bear over the edge of a wagon body and with means at one end for supporting a wagon seat, a stop strip adapted to be attached to a wagon body, a lever arm swinging from said member at its other end, means for applying strain to said lever arm to press its free end beneath said edge of a wagon body and with an outwardly directed toothed segment, means at one end of said member for supporting a wagon seat, a lever arm, swinging from said member and adapted to engage a wagon body at one end, and a spring pressed pawl 10 carried by said lever arm and engaging said segment. a
