Specification 0f Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 5, 1911.
' Application led'Deeember 1, 1909. Serial No. 530,723.
T'o'll whom# 'may concern:
Bc it` known that I, HENRY R. Hm'L, a
Philadelphia, Ieiinsyl fania, have invented ce1-tain' Improvements iii Tube-Cutting Mation.
Mylinvention relates to certain improvements yin means for'cutting papei-.or other tubes into sections.
The object of the invention is to Aso conpecially a .tapered tube, into .any number ot invention is to so construct the mechanism that the. tube Will be rotated simultaneously with the movement ott' the cutters into cut-. ting y position.
In the accompanying dra'Wing,-Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved tube' cutting machine; Fig. Q, is a plan view; Fig. 3, is an endvietv; Fig. 4, is an enlarged View partly in section on the line 4-4 Fig. l; Fig. 5, is a sectional vieiv on .the line Fig. 4; Fig. 6, is a perspective view shoiving a detail of the invention; Fig. 7, is a perspective vieiv of onc`ot the cutters; F ig, 8, is a View of the tube blank before cutting; Fig. 9, is a-vieW of the tubc blank after cutting, and-Figs. yI()v and 11 are enlarged sectional views on the` linel0-10 Fig. 1,' showing the cutters in their two positions. My invention is particularly adapted for cuttingthe tubes from which the body portions of paper bottles are made. These tubes are preferably made tapered' so that bottles of the same size can he readily nested,
can housed in cutting tubes of an even diameter throughout. I y I A is a standard, B is a head mounted on the standard and having bearings om?) for bearings is a loose belt pulley c and a clutch e by which the pulley may be` coupled to the shaft. The shaft C overhangs a eonsideiable distance, as shown, and supports a conical form` ,E is a bracket lextending-roni the head or the base., as desired, and on the outer end of this bracket is a movable bearing e having an open socket to receive the end of the shaft C. This bearing has a handle c2 by which` it can be moved. a stop a3 on the extreme end-of the bracket E limitsthei movement of the bearing in .one direct ion, while the shaft limits the movement. of Idie vbearingrin the opposite direction. `When a concis plaeed.on the form D or removed .ing screw g3 which also contines the carriage to the frame F.
Byloosening the screw f/" thcciitterbar can be raised. or lowered and the carriage can be adjusted, longitudinally on the trame to kvany position desired, 'after which the screw g'can be tighteneiil, holding the parts iii the position to which they are adjusted. In the present instance there are seven eutters and these can be adjusted at will on the trame In this instance they are grouped in pairs. By this arrangement the tube blank a', Fig. 8, is cut into six sections,
forming three body portions af', and a",
oit. diil"e'ieiit siZe,`Aand rings 1/3/ and i/2 which are used -as `ieintoi'eing bands at one edge of each portion, the rings being;l slipped onto the body portions anfd secured by paste 'or other means. The 'frame F has-a handle it by which it, eau be turned into aud-out ot'.
oi'ierative position.
livoted to the head B at. /zv is a. brake 7L', which bears against a disk e2 on the shaft (l. Fig. 4. and this brake has an arm /12 with which the trame comes in contact after tlic cutters have been moved back clear of the `form D. Aso that the 'form will be prevented tromA rotating. A stop b ou the head B prevents the trame E from moving beyond a given position after4 the tube is cut. The clutch f." is moved toward and from the pulleyf' by a slide n. actuated by a. lever u pivoted to the head l and havingl a pin n2, which enters a hole in the slide.. Fig. This lever is actuated b v a cam in on the frame Faso thatthe moment the trame is moved to bring` the cutters into aetion'the clutch is moved so that the shaft. will be `rotated. As soon as the 'frame is moved. so
as to throw the cuttersoutof action. then y the clutch is disconnected and the shaft remainsjstationary, I l As mentioned above, the vmam use lfor section.' rlhere are afterward assembled 10 and bottomedtoform bottles or` cups. The. tube, as shown in Fig. y8^, is made of paperrolled to tubular form and tapered andis placed on the vform D and 1s of such a s izel 'as to'it snugly thereon. Then by grasping l the handle F2 of the frameF, the cutters y are lmoved into acting posit-ion against the tated asthev clutch is vthrown into gear. Thecutters are gradually moved under the 2o tube, making a vdeep eut which will com-y '..seeti-ons of the tube can .be removed fromthe yfo'rman'd another tube substituted therefor. As shown in Fig. 10, the adjustingscrew g2 passes thrmgh a; slot in a slide q", adjustably attached to the barg. -A lug on the slide is'shapedtofengage'one of a series of notches in the back of the bar, so that an extended adjustment of the bar can be made lby -shifting the slide g4, and delicate adjustments can be made by means y of the screw g2. 'i
