CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
vnnnINe-Maomnn.
Tovv all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, HERBERT S. MFILLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vending-Machines, of which the following is a specification. The object of my invention is to provide a novel construction of vending machine in the class employing a magazine for holding a stacked supply of the article to be delivered from the base of the stack ea'ch. time the machine is worked upon being rendered operativc by inserting into it a coin of proper denomination.
I have devised my improvement more especially for vending sanitary drinking cups; and it is hereinafter described in that par tioular connegtion and so illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichigure 1 is a view of the-machine in front elevation with a portion of the front casing- Wall'broken away to disclose parts of the operating mechanism,- Fig. 2 is a section on line 2, Fig. 1, showing the under side of the casin top, which contains an opening and forms the base of the magazine provided with supports at intervals about the openii'ig for sustaining the stack of folded cups from the bottom v of which the delivery is produced; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the folded sanitary drinking cups with a portion broken away to show a detail of construction; Fig. 4 is a partly broken section on line 4, Fig; 1, condition the coin-controlled mechanism for actuating the delivery-mechanism of the n1achino, and Fig. 5 is a similar View showing the coin-controlled mechanism under actuation; Fig. 6 is a section on line (3 4; Fig. 7 is an enlarged section on line 1, Fig. 1, showing the delivery-mechanism; Fig. 8 is a section on line 8, Fig. 7, and Fig. 9 is a plan View regarded at the line 9, Fig. 8.
The drinking-cup 10 (Fig. 3) to be vended by my improved machine, ture-proof (paraflined) paper out of a suitable blank flaring from its transverse center toward its ends and folded upon itself at the center, with flaps 11 on the edges of one section folded over and cemented to the edge-portions of the'other section. Thus, in the normal condition of the cup, the sections are flatwise together as represented.
The case 12 is shown of rectangular shape Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed an as, 1911.

with a removable with a suitable kc the top .16'of the case is formed an 17 surrounded by a 'flarige 18 and of the gencup 10, with lugs 19 projccting'inwardly, one from each edge, to form an open seat for-a stack of the cups lowermost cup in the stack may be readily withdrawn. The top 16 ailords'the base of a magazine, which may be formed of a cage composed of upright rods 20 rising at suitable intervals from the flange 18 and connected at their upper ends, to tie them stably together, by a band 22 fastened by nuts 23 on the rods and a cylindrical hood 24, preferably of glass to render it transparent for displaying the contents of the magazine, and provided with a perma .nent metal cover 25, envelope the cage and is fastened at a metal flange 26 about its lower edge to the top 16.
In the top near one corner of the case is a which extends downside of the adjacent a coin-chute 28; The lower, discharge end of the chute 28registers with a recess 29 in the segmental head 30 of a lever 31 fulcrumed near its lower end, at 32, to the side-wall of the case, adjacent to a stop33 for limiting the returnwardly on the inner side-wall of the case movement of the lever, the lower end of which carries a finger 34 connected by a spiral spring 35 with a stud 36 on said wall. To this same wall is ulcrumed between its ends a lever 37 carrying on the inner face of its outer-end portion an obliquely extending lug 38 against which bears the lower, headed end ,of a vertical push-rod 39 working through, the top of-the case in a bearing 40 and provided on its outer end with a knob 41.
It will be noted that by depressing the operating push-rod, the lever 27 is forced against the head '30 with the latter upon a dead center and does not, therefore turn the head; whereas by introducing a coin 42 r (Fig. 1) through the chute to lodge in the front wall 14 equipped -operated lock 13 and I ,containing a lower-dclivery-opening 15. In opening.
lar upper stop 44 both on the aforesaid.
I side-wall of the case extends a concavelysegmental rack 45 to be engaged b'yaspringpressed pawl 46 on the lever to prevent return thereof, under theiretractiveiorde of a spring 47 to itsnormal positidiifl g any intermediate one between thlitposrtion and the'tripping osition hereinafter described.
that end of clever to acent end of a relativel -short arm 49 extendin into the path the dog from one end .0 a rock-shaft O fulcrnmedin bearings on the back of 'thecase and havin a relatively longer arm 51 extending orwardly, parallel with the arm-49, from the op 'osite end of the rock-shaft.
8n the bottom of the case is fastened, at a foot 52,-aI vertically slotted standard 53 inwhich is reciprocabl provided on its outer' ace with a stud 55' which projects through the relatively short slot in the back'of vthe standard and is connected with a stud56 on the standard near its lower end by a coiled retracting-spring 57 An angular arm -58 secured at the slot in the'standard to the inner face of the reci'procating bar 54, carries on its u per end a suction-cup 59, preferably of so t-rubber,
and has a stnd 60 projecting from near its lower end to extend across and under the adjacent end-of the arm 51. The position of the cup 59' is in line with the center of the'magazine-opening 1 With a stack 61 of the flat drinking-cups 10 in themagazine, and preferably having a' weight 62 resting upon it.for its resistance to the actionof the pneumatic cup 59, the
machine is ,operated as followsz'Upon in-,
sertin a suitable coin or token into the slot 27 to edge iiithe head 30, and depressin the ush-rod to enga e the coin, as describe the ever 31' is turne on its fulcrum by the turning of the lever 37 and discharges the coin out of the head into the bottom of the. case, where a suitable receptacle (not shown) may be provided to receive it; and the deression of the outer end of the' lever 37 rom the normal position shown in Fig. 4, to the position shown in Fig. 5 raises its inner. end to cause the dog 48 to encounter the adjacent end of the arm 49 and thereby turn the rock-shaft 50 to raise the arm .51.
In rising, the arm 51 encounters the horizontal section ofthe arm 58 which carries thecup 59 and raises the'bar 54 to impinge the cup centrally a ainst the lowermost drinking-cup 10 m t e stack. The operation is so timed that just-after the suctioncup'is pressed against the bottom' of the stack, the dog 48 clears and trips the arm confined a bar-54' 49 when, also, the pawl 46 has cleared the rack 45, permltting the-spring 47, upon the operators releasing the ush-rod, to retract the lever 37 to its norma position (Fig. 4).
Upon the release of the arm 49 from the dog 48, the spring 57 suddenly and forcibly retracts the bar 54 and cup latter in descending to pul 59 causing the away from the stack and off the seating lugs 19 through the I magazine base-opening 17 the lowermost cup On the lever 7 near its inner end is pivot 10 ally secu'reda spring-pressed do 48, which projects beyon perform the tripping purpose upon the ad y the suction-action thereon of the on 59. The folded drinking-cup thus pulls out drops on a curved chute-plate 63 exthe'opening 15 in its front wal, beyond which it forms a delivery-tray 64 (Fi 7) for the lodgment of the vended drinl in cu where --it is accessible for removzfi. W cm the chute-plate extends over the suctlon-cup and its attendant mechanism, it is cut out, as shown in 'Fi 7, to provide an opening 65 through whic to livery-mechanism to work.
