UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. BURT, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WATERBURY MFG. CO., OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
WHISTLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vhistles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1 a side view of a whistle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a view at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a sectional view on the line ab of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 a sectional view on the line 06Z of Fig. 2 upon an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 a plan View of the dividing plate, detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in whistles, and particularly to whistles of the duplex type, the object being to produce a duplex whistle with a single cylinder; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a tubular body 2 having its upper end turned inward to form a mouthpiece 3 and formed in opposite sides with vent openings 4 and 5. In connection with the tube I form a disk 6 with a series of transverse perforations 7 through which prongs 8 formed upon the upper end of a strip of sheet metal 9 may pass and be turned down onto the face of the disk so as to unite the disk to the strip at right angles. This disk is adapted to be seated in the cylinder just above the vent openings 4 and 5 and the opposite edges of the disk are cut away as at 10 and 11 for the escape of air forced into the mouthpiece. Attached to the lower Specification of Letters Patent.

end of the plate 9 by swaging or otherwise is a plug 12 adapted to close the end of the tube which is knurled or spun into a groove 13 around the plug so as to form a tight o1nt. Preferably this plug is formed with a perforated knob 14 for attachment to a chain or cord.
It will thus be seen that the cylinder 2 "is longitudinally divided and so that two whistles are produced. In order that the tone of one side shall be different from the other, I locate a block 15 of wood, metal or other substance in the bottom of the cylinder at one side of the plate 9, and to hold it in place the plate may be cut to form a finger 16 which will extend out overv the top of the block. I thus provide a metal duplex whistle which is formed without the use of solder, the parts are readily struck up and firmly united without difficulty.
I claim:
A duplex whistle comprising a tubular body open at one end and formed with a mouthpiece at the opposite end and on opposite sides with vent openings, a disk located in the tube above said openings and formed on opposite sides with clearance spaces and with a transverse series of perforations, a division plate formed at its upper end with fingers adapted to extend through said perforations and be turned onto the face of the disk, and a plug secured to the lower end of the plate and entered into and united with the end of the tube.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. BURT.
