To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. GIRDLER, a citizen of the .United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Decorated Attachments for Harness and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to decorated attachments for harness and for similar articles.

For the purpose of illustration I have in the accompanying drawings shown and herein described my invention in connection with a harness attachment made of leather.

Figure 1 illustrates a View of a part or piece of leather to be decorated. 'Fig. 2 illustrates the part with an opening formed therein. Fig. 3 illustrates the manner of cutting a section from the part 1, which section may be used as the filling, and the forming of the opening in the part or piece of leather by means of a die. Fig. 4 is a View of the piece of leather with the facing material in position thereon. Figs. 5 and 6 are plan views of the backing and inter mediate backing, respectively, of the part or piece of leather. Fig. 7 is a side view of the part 1, the facing strip, the backing, and the intermediate backing, these parts being thrown back to show the position of these parts on the interior. Fig. 8 is a perspective view from the rear, of the part 1, after it has been decorated according to my process, with the backing 4lthrown up. Fig. 9 is a front view of a part or piece of leather which has been decorated according to my invention. Fig. 10 is a transverse section on the line 10-10, Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a plan view of the filling after it has been slightly reduced in size and its circumferential edge beveled. Fig. 12 is a section of the filling on the line 1212, of Fig. 11.

In the drawings, 1 indicates a harness part which it is desired to decorate according to my invention. The part 1 includes a piece of leather 1 with an opening l formed therein and corresponding in shape to the shape of the intended design. In the pre ferred manner of carrying out the invention the opening 1 may be formed by striking with a die from the part 1 a section suitably shaped for the intended design, which may be and preferably is utilized in the making of the article in order to prevent waste of material. This section will be hereinafter referred to as the filling.

2 indicates a piece of relatively thin flexible facing material for covering the opening 1*. It is placed on the under side of the part 1. This facing material, for example, may be a piece of patent leather laid on said part 1 so that a portion of the treated or glazed surface thereof will be exposed through said opening 1 3 indicates a filling adapted to lie in engagement with said facing material 2 and in registering position behind the opening 1". Before the filling 8 is placed in position it is previously shaped to correspond to the shape of the opening 1", but is of slightly smaller dimensions in order that it may be partially pressed into or through the said opening. The front edges of the filling 3 are preferably beveled in order to permit it and the facing material to be easily pressed into the opening 1", and also to prevent the facing material from cracking and to obtain the final appearance of the decoration. When the section cut from the part 1 is used as the filling, as already described, it is only necessary to bevel its edge on one side and slightly reduce it in size.

4 indicates a backing for the part 1, preferably formed from relatively stiff material. The backing 4: may be secured to the part 1 in any suitable manner, as by stitches 4 5 indicates an intermediate backing int-erposed between the filling 3 and facing material 2, and the backing 4. The intermediate backing 5 may be secured to the part 1 by stitches 5. When it is used the backing in reality consists of the two parts 4 and 5. This backing 5 may be of rigid material struck or formed of any desired surface shape, so as to cause the surface of the part 1 to conform to the shape of the surface of the part 5, when the two are secured together.

It will be noted that various leather articles and particularly fittings for harness may be decorated according to my invention, thus adding greatly to their appearance and salable value without materially increasing their cost of manufacture.

What I claim is:

1. A decorated attachment for harness and like purposes including a piece of leather having a section struck out of it leaving an opening corresponding in shape to the intended decorative design, a piece of relatively flexible material covering said opening from the rear side of said piece of leather, a filling consisting of a flat piece of material corresponding in shape to said opening through the piece of leather and slightly reduced in size relative to the dimensions of said opening, and a backing piece secured to said piece of leather and engaging said filling and holding it in said opening, said filling being arranged against the rear surface of said facing material and registering with the opening through said piece of leather whereby the front exposed portion of said facing material is held in said opening.

A decorated attachment for harness and like purposes, including a piece of leather having a section struck out of it leaving an opening corresponding in shape to the intended decorative design, a piece of relatively flexible material covering said opening from the rear side of said piece of leather and stitched to said piece of leather,

a filling consisting of a flat piece of material corresponding in shape to said opening through the piece of leather and slightly reduced'in size relative to the dimensions of said opening, the edges of the front face of said filling piece being beveled and means engaging said filling and holding it against the rear face of said facing material whereby the front exposed portion of said facing material is held in said opening.

8. A decorated attachment for harness and like purposes including a piece of leather having a section struck out of it leaving an opening corresponding in shape to the intended decorative design, a piece of relatively flexible material covering said opening from the rear side of said pleee of leather, a filling formed from a fiat piece of material corresponding in shape to said opening and having the edges of its front face beveled, said filling being arranged against the rear surface of said facing material and registering with the opening through said piece of leather, and means secured to said piece of leather and holding said filling against said facing material whereby the front exposed portion of said facing material is held in said opening and the boundaries of said exposed portion beveled or rounded.
