FEED MECHANISM FOR CAN-HEADS AND CAN-BODIES.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911..
Application filed May 20, 1910. Serial No. 562,406.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN V. SWANGREN, a citizen'of the United States, residing in Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed Mechanism for Cana can head and can body feeder for automatically feeding can heads and can bodies to continuously moving carriers of double seaming or other machines, which-will be of a simple, efficient and durable construction and operate to automatically feed the can bodies to the can body receiving pockets of the continuously moving carrier from a can chute or runway, and also automatically feed the can heads from a pile or stack in a can head holder and deliver the same automatically to the can head seats of the continuously moving carrier, and in which both the feed of the can heads and can bodies will be automatically controlled by the presence or absence of the other, so that a can head will not be delivered to the carrier unless a can body is also delivered or in position tobe delivered to the carrier, and so that a can body will not be delivered to the carrier unless a can head is also delivered thereto or in position to be delivered thereto.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result, the same comprising certain novel constructions of parts and devices and certain novel combinations of parts and devices as herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation, partly in vertical section, of a can head and body feed mechanism embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation partly in vertical section. Fig. 3 1s a detail elevation showing a portion of the can body feed chute and certain connected parts. Fig. 4 is a detail section on line H of Fig. 2. -Fig. 5 is an enlarged detall section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1 and Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of parts hereinafter to be described.
In the drawing, 1 represents a portion of the frame of a can seaming or other machine having a continuously revolving carrier 2, furnished with a plurality of can body receiving pockets 3, and also a plurality of can head receiving seats 4, to which pockets and seats the can bodies 5 and can heads 6 are to be automatically fed or delivered as the carrier rotates continuously, and 7 is the shaft of the carrier 2. These parts may be of any suitable or known construction and need no further description.
8 is a can body feed chute or runway;
preferably arranged in an inclined position,
and from which the can bodies are to be fed or delivered one by one into the pockets 3 of the carrier 2. The can body feed chute 8 is provided with a can body-feeder 9, preferably a finger or lever adapted to projectinto the path of the can bodies in the chute 8 and to permit the feed or delivery of the lowermost can body in the chute into one of the pockets 3 of the carrier 2 when the feeder 9 is withdrawn.
The can head holder 10 in which the can heads 6 are placed in a pile or stack, as shown in Fig. 2, is preferably arranged in an inclined position, and is preferably of semi-cylindric form, and provided with a fixed lip 11 to support the pile of can heads at one edge, and with a rotary feeder 12, having two sets of can head supporting teeth 13 and 1 1, the teeth on one set being alternately arranged in respect to those of the other, the one set being separated or spaced apart from the other set the thick-. ness of a can head, so that as the feeder 12 rotates, the pile of can heads in the holder 10 will be alternately supported by a tooth of the lowermost set 13 and next by a tooth of the uppermost set 14, thus causing the gravity from the inclined chute 15 into one of the pockets 21 of a continuously rotat-' ing can head delivery wheel 22, which is preferably driven from the shaft 7 of the carrier2 through intermeshing gears 23,
24, 2 5, 26, to cause the can head pockets of the delivery wheel to register with the can body pockets and can head seats of the carrier 2 as the carrier 2 and wheel 22 revolve continuously. The can head delivery wheel. 22 is preferably formed of a sheet metal ring having projecting members 27 and a back plate or disk 28 separated from the ring by the thickness of a can head, the
can head pockets 21 being separated from each other by intervening segmental blocks 29. A stationary curved guide or guard 30 supports the can head in the pocket of the delivery wheel 22 as the wheel 22 revolves. The guide or guard 30 is furnished with a flange 31 to keep the can head in an upright position as it is moved by the delivery wheel 22 into the can' head seat 4 of the carrier 2 as the carrier 2 and delivery wheel 22 rotate Y Each of the can head pockets 21 of the delivery wheel 22 is furnished with a movable feed-controller 32, the position of which is governed by the presence or absence of a can head 6 in the pocket 21 of the delivery wheel 22.= Themovable feed-controller 32 preferably consists of a sliding-pin having a disk 33 and mounted in-a hollow stud or sleeve 34 secured'to the delivery wheel 22, and furnished with an annular groove 35 for engagement with a retaining spring 36, which serves to hold the feed-controller in normal backing or spring 39 to cushion the engagement of the feed-controller therewith and to permit the cam 37 to move out of the path of the feed-controller in case a can head is present in the pocket 21 and thus prevents any inward movement of the feed-controller. The feed-controller 32 is furnished with a collar 40 to limit the inward movement of the feed-controller. In case a can head 6 is in the pocket 21 of the delivery wheel 22, the can head itself prevents any inward sliding movement of the feed-controller 32, the spring '39 permitting the yielding cam or arm 37 to move out of the way of the feed-controller as' it passes. In case a can head 6 is in the pocket 21 of the can head delivery wheel 22 in position to be delivered into the can head seat 4 of the carrier 2, the can head governed feed controller 32 remains in its normal position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5,- and as the delivery wheel 22 continues its rotation, the disk 33 on the feed-controller engages the cam arm 41 of the can body feed operating lever 42, which is connected by a link 43 to the can body' feeder 9, and thus withdraws said feeder 9 and permits the lowermost can body in the can body.
can head is in the pocket 21 of the delivery wheel 22 when such pocket passes the movable cam' or lever 37, said cam pushes the feed-controller 32 inward, so that the disk 33 of the feed-controller engages the laterally oft'set arm 44 of the can body feeder operating lever 42, and thus holds the can body feeder 9 closed and prevents the can bodies which may normally ride against the outer periphery of the carrier 2 from dropping into the can body pocket 3 thereof as the carrier rotates, the disk 33 being thus moved out of line with the operating arm 41 of the lever 42. The operation of the can body feeder 9 is thus controlled by the can head governed feed-controller mounted on the can head delivery wheel so that no can body can be fed from the can body chute 8 to the pocket of the carrier 2 unless a can head is in position in the corresponding pocket of the delivery wheel 22 to be also delivered to the corresponding can head seat of the carrier 2. This prevents the feed or deliveryof acan body to the carrier 2 unless a can head is also delivered into registry with such To automatically control the feed of the can heads from the holder 10 to the delivery wheel 22 by the presence or absence of can bodies in the can body chute 8 so that no can headswill be fed from the holder 10 unless can bodies are also in position to be fed from v troller is connected by a link 46 with an arm 47 on the hub 48 engaging a movable forked cam 49 pivoted at 50 to a bracket 51 on the can body chute, and which normally engages the disk 33 of the feed-controller 32, and.
thus operates to restore the feed-controller 32 to its normal position so that it will engage the star wheel 20, through which the can head feeder 12 is o erated by the feedcontroller 32 as the de ivery wheel 22 rotates. In the event, however, that there are no can bodies in the chute 8 to operate the device 45, and through it the forked cam 49, said forked cam by engagement with, the disk 33 moves the feed controller 32 into position to pass the star wheel 20 Without engagement therewith and thus prevents the feed of the can head from the holder 10 unless there are can bodies in the chute 8 also in position to be fed.
A stationary cam or projection 53 on the frame serves by engagement with the disk 33 of the feed-controller 32 to restore each 9f the feed-controllers 32 on the delivery wheel 22 to normal position.
The delivery chute 15 extends at an angle to the plane of the delivery wheel 22 and intersects the same centrally or at a plane radially inside the can head pockets of the carrier so that the can heads are delivered to the wheel relatively near the center or axis thereof and where the travel is slow as compared with the rim or peripheral portion of the wheel. tates the certain and accurate delivery of the can heads from the chute into the pockets of the delivery wheel 22.
