Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 19, 1910. Serial No. 587,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL JAGENBERG, a citizen of Germany, residing at Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Label Gumming and Attaching Machine, of which the fication.
This invention relates to a machine of novel construction for gumming labels and.
securing the gummed labels to suitable objects.
The machine is simple in construction, operates quickly, is accurate and thoroughly reliable in its movements.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a section through the drum. tongue and cooperating parts, and Fig. 3 a similar section showing the parts in a different position.
Upon a rotating shaft c is mounted a drum (1 composed of a pair of spaced disks connected at their periphery by one or more segments 6. The labels are stacked in a magazine a pivoted to a slide c, which is guided on the machine frame tangentially to drum a, so that as the slide moves obliquely upward, the bottom label will impinge against segment 7). Upon shaft 0 is mounted a cam 7", which engages a cam roller journalcd in an arm 0' of slide 0. The contour of the cam is such that after the bottom label has engaged segment 6, the speed of the further ascending slide is equal to the speed of the segment. In this way the bottom label will adhere to the segment snugly and without wrinkles, the segment having been previously coated with an adhesive by rollers 9. Upon the further rotation of drum (1, the bottom label will be drawn out of the magazine, while the superposed labels will be held against withdrawal by hooks formed at the mouth of the magazine, and against which they are pressed by a follower h.
Upon the machine frame is guided a horizontally movable tongue 2' provided with a number of spaced relatively fixed jaws 71: adapted to engage transverse grooves 71 of segment I), and spaced movable jaws Z. At its rear end tongue 2' is connected to rod m pivoted to elbow lever n which engages a cam 0 fast on a countershaft p driven from shaft Movable jaws l are provided with an arm I] having a roller whichis spring held against the bottom of a horizontally following is a speciarranged vertically movable rail 9*. This rail is connected at one end to a pivoted arm 8 and at its other end to a pivoted elbow lever 25 which operatively engages the cam u.
Tongue i is advanced by cam 0 when segment 7) occupies approximately its uppermost position, so that the lower jaws 7: will enter grooves 72 to be located below the forward end of the label adhering to said segment. Simultaneously therewith cam u will so swing lever t, that rail 7' is raised, to lower jaws Z upon the label and thereby clamp it to jaws 7c. Jaws is, Z are then retracted by cam 0 with a speed equal. to that of segment 7) so that the label is peeled oil the same. The jaws finally attach the label to the object v which has been brought into the position illustrated in Fig. 1 immediately after segment I) has cleared port 1 during its continued rotation. Cam 0 is so shaped that the jaws 70, Z come to a temporary standstill during the above label grasping and attaching operations, so as to insure a reliable working of the machine.
The attachment is effected by a plunger, or by elevating the object against a suitable supabutment. During the receding motion of the tongue, movable jaws Z are opened to liberate the label. Of course the tongues may be so placed as to cooperate with the segment when the latter arrives at its bottom or other position.
I claim:
1. In a label gumming and attaching machine. a continuously rotating segment, means for applying an adhesive'thereto, means for applying a label to said segment, a clamping jaw movable in substantial tangentiality to said segment, means for advancing and collapsing the jaws to grasp the label, and means for retracting the jaws with a speed equal to that of the segment to peel the label ofl" said segment and attach it to an article, the jaws being at a temporary standstill during said label grasping and attaching operations.
2. In a label gumming and attaching machine, a continuously rotating segment having a grooved edge, means for applying an adhesive thereto, means for applying a label to said segment to partly overlap its grooves, clamping jaws movable in substantial tangentiality to said segment and adapted to enter said grooves, means for advancing and collapsing the jaws to grasp the overlapping label section, and means for retracting the jaws with a speed equal to that of the segment to peel the label off said segment and attach it to an article, the jaws being at a temporary standstill during said label grasping and attaching operations.
