TTORNEYS A NT FFIfiE.
DAVIS MARINSKY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, I911.
Application filed January 6, 1911. Serial No. 601,104.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVIS MARINSKY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool- Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to spool holders for use by seamstresses and others, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is securely closed when not in use and which is automatically opened by depressing an arm or lever which projects therefrom, which operation also throws into position for use a spool of thread mounted in connection with said arm or lever; a further object being to provide a device of the class described which is adapted to hold a number of spools of thread of diiferent colors, and which may also be used for other purposes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the followlng specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved spool holder and showing the cover thereof open and with part of the construction in section; Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section; and, Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the parts in a diiferent position and showing a spool in section.
In the practice of my invention, I provide an oblong box or case a, the body portion of which is preferably approximately rectangular in form, and said body portion is also provided with a front extension a in which is mounted a removable drawer b. The box or case a; is also provided with a cover 0 which is hinged at the back as shown at 0 and in the front wall a of the body portion of the case, and above the forward extension a thereof, are a plurality of slots or openings a rearwardly of which are pivoted as shown at o forwardly directed arms or levers d having thumb or finger keys or pieces (Z by which said arms or levers may be depressed, and the inner or pivoted ends of said arms or levers are provided with downwardly directed extensions (Z having backwardly and downwardly directed members (Z provided with pins d which project at right angles to the members (Z and which are adapted to receive spools of thread as shown at e.
The cover 0 is designed to serve as a pincushion and is composed of a bottom plate 0 and a top-cushion portion 0 and said plate 0 is provided at intervals corresponding with the position of the pins d with short downwardly directed lugs or projections f, and rearwardly of said lugs or projections f, the bottom plate 0 of the cover 0 is provided with a transverse groove or recess 0 The arms or levers d are also provided on the underside thereof with triangular projections (Z which limit the downward movement thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, and, in practice, spools c of diiferent colored thread are placed on the pins (Z5 and the normal position of the parts of the device or apparatus is that shown in Fig. 2.
In practice, the thumb or finger keys or pieces 03 are colored red, white, black or any other desired color, and the corresponding pins (Z are provided with spools of thread of a similar color, and an operator, who desires to use thread on one of said spools depresses the corresponding arm or lever (Z, as shown in Fig. 3. In this operation, the corresponding pin (Z and spool c thereon moves upwardly into the position shown in said figure, and in this operation the upper end of the spool strikes the bottom plate 0 of the cover 0 and raises said cover as shown in said figure, and in this operation the corresponding lug or projection f on said cover enters a recess f in the upper end of the pin (i and holds the cover 0 open, as shown in said figure, as long as the said spool or the thread thereon is in use. If the operatordesires to use a different colored thread another of the arms or wardly into position for use it strikes the cover 0 and slightly raises it and releases the first spool which drops back into its normal position, while the spool last raised remains in the upright position, or in the position shown by the sectioned spool in Fig. 3, and this operation is repeated each time that a different spool or the thread thereon is desired.
I also provide means for releasing the levers (Z is depressed and as the corresponding spool moves up cover without throwing a spool into the upright position, or into position for use, and for this purpose, I pivot to the inner side of one end of the box or case as shown at g, a lever h, the front end of which is provided with a pin 7L2 which passes out through a vertically arranged slot h in the said end of the case and is provided with a knob or head h and connected with the inner or rear end of the lever 72 is a vertically arranged bar 72, which passes upwardly through a keeper h secured to the said end of the box or case and by depressing the knob or head 7%, the bar its will be thrown upwardly, and the cover 0 will be slightly raised thereby and the upright spool will drop back into its normal position, when the pressure is released from the knob or head it the cover 0 will also drop into l recesses 1n the ends of said pins.
the closed position.
The inner end of the lever h is preferably: passed through a keeper 71 secured to the; end of the box or case and isalso preferably h which normally;
and the bar if in;
1 at their inner ends with downwardly and provided with a spring serves to hold said lever the positionshown in Fig. 2.
One end of the box or case ais also pro vided with a thimble support 2' and theother end thereof with a vertically arranged receptacle 2' designed for recelving apair of scissors or shears, and the drawer Z) may serve as a receptacle for various articles, as will .be readily understood.
Althou h, I have shown but three of the spools and spool holders, it will be apparent that any desired number may be employed, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
