Letters Patent No. 100,145, dated February 22, 187 0.
IMPROVEMENT HEDGE AND TREE-TRIMMER,
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, CALEB E. HEALY, of New London, in the county of Huron, and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Hedge and Tree-Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.
'Phe nature of this invention relates to a machine or instrument for trimming trees and large shrubbery, and is so constructed that it will cut with ease quite large twigs, boughs, or branches, the knife-blame being like that of a knife in a persons hand when whittling.
In the accompanying drawing 7 Figure 1 is a side view of the machine, the dot-ted lines representing it open.
A represents a blade of iron or steel having a curved point at its upper end. The inside curve may be sharpened to a cutting-edge, or not, as may be de-- sired. The other end of the blade is inserted in and secured to a handle,'B, which may be of any desired length.
Attached to the blake A, by bolts or other suitable means, are double arms 0 cl, connected at e by a bolt. A curved lever, j, plays on the bolt at e, and has secured to it a handle, H, the handles B and H being parallel to each other when the knives are closed. A knife, g, is placed between the arms 0 and d.
-in proper relation to the blade A.
The blade g has its upper end curved similar to that of A, with its outside curve sharpened. Its lower end i is also curved, and'slides in a lug, 1', attached to the blade A. I
The curved lever f is pivoted at its upper end to the knife g; thus when the handles B and H are operated, theknif'e g is carried in a curved line back anl forth in conjunction with the blade A.
The various parts of this instrument may be made of malleable iron, except the blade g, which should be made of Steel. By this mode of construction a very powerful and convenient instrument is made, capable of cutting large twigs or branches from trees, and, by having the handles long, may be operated high up in a tree out of the reach of the ordinary method.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat eat, is-- The blade A, blade arms 0 (I, and lever f, with the handles B and H, constructed, combined, and arranged to operate as and for the purpose'si-t foith.
Witnesses: CALEB E. HEALY.
Geo. W. Trnnrrrs, GEO. Husrnn.
