Description

H. K. HAZ-LETT, 'OF ST2 LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Letters .Patent No. 100,144, dated February 22, 1870.
FEED-WATER PURIFIE FOR STEAM-GENERATORS. l
-n-opQ-ny l The Schedule referredrto in these Letters Patent and making part of the lama .in section.
lts object is to purifythe feed-water in its passage from the heater to the boilers, so as to prevent incrustation and save'the labor 'of frequent cleaning'of the 'I latter. 4
It consists ot' a tank, A, having an inner tank or lining, B, extending from the top nearly to the bottom, and leaving a space between itself and the sides of A.'y A pipe, a, passes ti'om thislining through the side of the tank, while two other pipes, b c, lead vfrom A, the one at'the bottom and the other at the side, as seen.
.Baskets D andl E, having wire bottoms, and attached toa cover, H, are made to tit. inside of B, the lower basket extending a little below the bottom ot' B. 'lhe cover and the baskets are represented as raisedout of the tank.- The cover is made totit tightlyi and is secured by nuts and bolts, or' any other suitable device which will permit its being removed easily and quickly. The lowerbasket inay be tilled with oaklbark, and the other with hay or other suitable ltering substance, such as commonly used.
The pipe d is connected with the heater, and to e is attached the hot-water pump, each, as well as b, being furnished with suitablecocks, not shown.,
The hot water entering a falls into E, and thence through D passes into the tank A, the sediment not taken up bythe baskets naturally falling to the bottom, while the purer water rises and occupies the space between A and B, whence, bythe pipe c, the pumps force it into the boilers, c being placed some distance above the bottom of A.
About once in twentyfonr hours the cock in b may be opened, and the waterallowed to carry the deposit away from the bottom ofthe tank, which is made, ooncave to facilitate this operation. As it will not require much water for this purpose, the hot-water pump may be kept in operation all the time, so the operation will cause no delay.
When the baskets get foul,7 they may be removed by attaching a. tackleto the ring k, and while they The tank may be placedvwherever most convenient, l andmay be supplied with feet, o o o", the latternot I shown, Aby vwhich it may bolted to the deck. l
It desired, the baskets need not be united, but may bel separated, which, in a large apparatus, will probably b'e more convenient in removing them from the tank. A
' The number ot' baskets also may be increased, and the filtering substance placed in them varied, but those I have mentioned I find to work very well iu practice, and-for a. small apparatus two baskets answer every need.. v
To give some idea'of the dimensions of the appa ratus, Ivwill describe one now in actual use. It is forty inches in height and the same in width. The space between the tanks is eight inches, and the inner tank extends within eight inches ofthe bottom oft-he outer tank. It is made of No. 10 iron, and arnply-- supplies a pair of boilers each thirty-six by twenty feet.' I of course do not limit myself to any of these dimensions,
since they may be varied at pleasure, as circumstances may require. Y
With this apparatus purer water is supplied the boilers, thereby very materially.diminishing their wear.
No time is lost in frequent cleanings, which', o u' the western waters particularly, isa matter of great annoyance; and as the blowing olf does not interrupt the supply of hot water, or necessitate the cooling of the boilers, the extra fuel saved.
` I am well aware that attempts have heretofore been made to purify feed-water by passingitover andthrough plates arranged inatank, which is kept hot; butImake no claim to any novelty iu the principle displayed, but merely claim as my invention, and' desire to securefby Letters Patent- Tile tanks A B, baskets D E, and pipesa b @when constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose show nand speeitied.
