' RAILWAY-TIE.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BEZY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tilton, in the county of Cross, State of irlmnsas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties; and a I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railway ties and clamping devices.
An object of this invention is the provision of a railway tie so constructed that it may be used for the purpose of clamping the supporting rails thereon against displacement andpermitting the same to expand and contract when acted upon by the various atmospheric elements.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a railway tie having seats formed in itsopposite ends and longitudinal channels extending therethrough in which are located sliding blocks adapted to be moved longitudinally with respect to the tie for engagement with the base flanges of a rail, the said blocks being vertically apertured for engagement with tapered wedges, whereby the said clamping blocks may be forced into engagement with the said rails and held against displacement.
A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and ,illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the clamping blocks removed, and Fig. 7 is a detailed perspective view of the locking wedge.

by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates my improved tie which is substantially rectangular in shape being preferably hollow in formation and comprising opposite sides 11 connected at their lower edges by a base plate 12 and at their upper edges by a top or rail engaging plate 13. The opposite ends of the plate 13 are recessed, as indicated by the numeral 14, substantially half way, producing seats 15 upon which are adapted to rest the base flanges 16 of rails 17 of the usual construction.
The inner ends of the seats 15 are bevelec outwardly, to form ribs as indicated by the numeral 18 for engagement with one side of the said base flanges 16 of the rails 17. The interior channel 19 of the tie 10 has slidably located therein clamping plates 20, each of which is provided with a vertically extending longitudinal web 21, which extends through slots 22 formed in the top 13, while formed upon the terminal of each of the webs 21 is a horizontally disposed plate 23 which conforms in width to the width of the tie and is forwardly beveled at its inner end for engagement with one side of each of the base flanges 16 opposite to the side of the base flange engaged by the rib 18. The bottoms 12 of the ties 10 adjacent the opposite ends thereof are vertically apertured as indicated by the numeral 24: for engagement with the lower terminals of locking wedges 25 which are extended through vertical apertures 26 formed in the clamping plate 20, web 21 and plate 23, respectively.
Manifestly as the locking wedges 25 are forced downwardly through the slots 24 and 26 the clamping members will be forced tightly into engagement with the base flanges of the rails and held against displacement by the binding engagement between the wedges 25 and the edges of the slots 24: and 26 the lower flat faces of heads greater in width than the web 21 which serves to prevent any undesired vertical displacement of the same from the channel 19.
Having thus fully described this invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
' The combination With a tie having a longitudinally extending channel and seats formed at its opposite ends terminating inardly in beveled rail engaging shoulders, clamping members slidable in the channel, to and from the rail engaging shoulders, a rib formed at one edge of each of the said clamping members, said clamping members each comprising a clamping plate engaging the channel, a Vertically extending Web projecting from the clamping plate comprised in each clamping member through slots formed in the tie, a plate formed upon each Web for engagement With the base flange of a rail, the said clamping members and tie being formed With vertically alining apertures, clamping Wedges extending through said apertures and engaging the edges there of and heads formed upon the clamping Wedges for engagement With the faces of the clamping members, Which heads When the edges engage the edges of the openings serve to hold the said Wedges against displacement, substantially as and for the purposes setforth.
