Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 8, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER D. JosLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Stamps, of which he following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to perfect the action and facilitate the operation of the hand stamp in respect to the automatic adjustment of the striking platen; the connection and disconnection of the ribbon actuating mechanism; the locking and unlocking of the upper and lower parts of the body of the stamp, and to visualize the winding of the ribbon on the spools as particularized and clearly set forth in the following specifications, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a left hand side elevation of the stamp, the parts being closed. Fig. 2 is a right side elevation of the parts in position as shown in Fig. 1, the casing being broken away and sectioned to show the inside mechanism. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the striking head and platen. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail on the line 5-5, Fig. 1. In the drawings 7 indicates the base. Pivoted in the rear of said base is the arm 8 and the cover 9 supported on the shaft 10*. Forming part of the front portion of the base are walls 11 in which dating wheels shown in Fig. 9 are supported on the shaft 12. This shaft is shown in detail in'Fig. 5. Extending through this shaft is a bore 13 adapted to support a bolt 11 which is actuated by a coiled spring 15. Fixed on one end of this bolt is a button 16 which is connected with the shaft 14: by a pin 17 which is slidably engaged in the head 18 of the shaft, and by which the shaft and bolt are adapted to be rotated as one piece. The other end 19 of the bolt is adapted to enter a recess 20 in the covert) as shown in Fig. 5, and to be held there by the spring 15 inside the shaft. To release this cover the bolt can be drawn within the shaft by means of the button 16, the sliding movement thus produced being limited by the compression of the spring to an extent indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5, the bolt being returned to the normal position shown by the pressure of the spring. In closing the cover on the base the beveled portion 21 comes in slidable contact with the head of the bolt whereby the bolt is forced back into the bore 13 till the cover is forced down into place. Then the action of the spring forces the bolt back to its normal position into the recess 20 thereby locking the cover and the base together. Extending through the front of the cover is a rotatable spool shaft 22. This shaft is mounted with a button 23, and
.is adapted to carry an inking ribbon 241 which passes over the die 25, and bearing rod 26 onto the shaft 27. This shaft is also supported in the cover 9*. Fixed on the shaft 27 close to the inside wall of the cover is a ratchet wheel 28 by which the inking ribbon is wound from the shaft 22 to shaft 27. Pivotally supported on the in side wall of the cover by a screw 29 is a holding pawl 30, the free end of which rests on the teeth of the ratchet wheel 28. Under this holding pawl and pivotally connected to a projecting lug 31 on the arm 8 is an actuating pawl 32, the free end of which by gravity engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel. This pawl actuates the ratchet wheel each time the arm 8 is raised by the pressure of the spring 33. Supported in the wall of the cover beneath the actuating pawl is a cam 34:, the shaft of which extends through the wall of the cover 1n which it is adapted to be rotated. On the outside end of this shaft a button 35 is secured by a pin 36. Projecting from the face of this button is a radial ridge 37 adapted to enter a corresponding, groove in the outside of the wall against which the button is pressed by a spring split ring 38. The cam is thereby adapted to be held in position when moved either way one-half turn. The head 39 of the arm 8 as shown in Fig. 41 is bored out and threaded at 40 to receive and hold the cap 11. Seated in the bottom of this bore is'a rubber disk 12. EX- tending vertically through the center of the bore 30 is a tapering hole 43. The underside of this head in which the bore 40 is the center is semi-spherical forming a seat in which the part 45 of the platen iet is free to oscillate. The face of the platen is recessed to hold the pad 44%. The head and platen being loosely connected together by the screw 46 is adjustably supported by the rubber disk l2.
In Figs. 7, 8, 9, and 10 an indicator mechanism is shown. This consists of a screw 47 extending transversely through the left side of the base and rotatable therein. On this screw a pointer 4-8 is secured, on the outside of the base, the point of which is adapted to travel over a quadrantal scale 49 fixed on said base as shown in Fig. 7. Rigidly secured on the screw 47 is a lever 50 adapted to be engaged by the inking ribbon 24 and held in contact therewith by the spring 51. WVhen the, full roll of ribbon is in position on the shaft 22 its contact with the lever 50 depresses it, and raises the pointer 48 to the highest mark on the scale 49 as shown in Fig. 7. As the stamp is operated and the diameter of the roll decreases the contact of the lever is maintained by the spring 51. As the stamp is operated and the ribbon wound on the shaft 27 it decreases the diameter of the roll of ribbon on the shaft 22, the lever 50 rises and the pointer lowers until it reaches the lowest mark on the scale thereby indicating that the ribbon should be rewound, which operation when performed depresses the lever and raises the indicator to the original position. This movement of the pointer is regulated by the particular curve 52 of the lever shown in Figs. 7 and 10.
The operation of the parts when constructed as described and illustrated is as follows: To lift the cover from the base the button 16 is drawn out from the head of the shaft 12 as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 5 whereby the bolt 19 is drawn inward compressing the spring 15 within the shaft. The end of the bolt being thus withdrawn from the recess 20 in the cover it is raised on the shaft 10 as high as desired. Access is thereby obtained to the interior of the base in which the dating wheels 53 and printing die 25 are secured, and to the inside of the cover in which the ribbon holding and moving mechanism is supported. When the dating wheels and printing die are adjusted in the base and the inking ribbon secured in the cover, the cover is then pressed down on the base. The ribbon depressing the lever 52 and raising the indicator 48. During this movement of the cover the inclined part 21 on the inside wall of the cover engages the part 19 of the bolt 14 which is thereby pressed back into the shaft the pressure of the spring 15 returning the bolt to its normal position as the recess 20 registers therewith, whereby the base and the cover are locked together. The holding and actuating pawls rest by gravity on the ratchet wheel which is partly rotated by each upward movement of the arm 8, and
the ribbon thereby wound on the shaft 27.
As this movement of the ribbon progresses it is indicated by the pointer 48. When the ribbon is to be rewound the button 35 on the shaft of the cam 34 is given a half turn by the finger and thumb. In this movement of the cam the ridge 37 is forced out of the groove in the side of the cover whereby the spring 38 is compressed between the cam and the wall until the half turn is complete, and the ridge slips back into the groove'by pressure of this spring, whereby the cam is held in a normal position either in contact with or out of contact with the actuating pawl 32. lVhen the cam is turned into contact with the actuating pawl the upward movement of this pawl brings it in contact with the holding pawl, and raises and holds it out of cont-act with the ratchet wheel which is now free to be rotated, and the ribbon thereby be rewound on the shaft 22. When the rewinding is complete the button is given a half turn whereby the cam is moved out of contact with the pawl both of which again engage the ratchet wheel as before.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hand stamp of the kind described, having a base and a cover pivotally joined thereto, a dating wheel shaft rotatably supported in said base having a central longitudinal bore therethrough, aspring pressed bolt through said bore, and slidable therein, one end of said bolt projecting from one end of said shaft, and thereby adapted to extend into a recess in said cover, and locking it on said base, a button on the opposite end of said bolt by which the projecting end of said bolt can be withdrawn from said recess in said cover, and the cover be thereby unlocked as described.
2. In a hand stamp having a base and a cover pivotally connected, a dating wheel shaft supported transversely in said base, a bolt extending longitudinally through said shaft and slidable therein, a coiled spring encircling part of said bolt within said shaft adapted to return said bolt to a normal position in said shaft, and to hold it in contact with said cover when closed, a button se cured to one end of said bolt and slidable means connecting said button and shaft whereby said button and shaft are rotatable as one piece, and the bolt may be moved longitudinally in said shaft for the purpose described.
3. In a hand stamp the body whereof consists of a base and a cover pivotally connected together at one end, the combination with a dating wheel shaft in said base; of a bolt extending longitudinally through said shaft, one end of said bolt being adapted to extend into a recess of said cover, and lock said cover on said base, means in said shaft adapted to hold said bolt in normal contact with said cover in the locked position.
4. In a hand stamp, a locking device consisting of a spring pressed bolt slidably supported longitudinally in the dating wheel shaft, said bolt being adapted to be forced inward of said shaft by the downward pressure of the cover, and to enter a recess in said cover, and lock it in a closed position, and means for withdrawing said bolt from said recess, and unlocking said cover as described.
5. In a hand stamp having a base and cover pivotally joined at one end, the combination with said base of a dating wheel shaft transversely supported therein, and a bolt extending longitudinally through said shaft, slidable therein, and rotatable therewith, adapted to be moved by manual action of the operator, said cover is provided with an opening registering with the end of said bolt, which is adapted to enter said opening, whereby said cover can be locked to said base, and be released therefrom as described.
6. In a hand stamp having a base and a cover, an inking ribbon holding an actuating mechanism supported within said cover, consisting of a pair of winding spool shafts, a ratchet wheel on one of said shafts,
' a holding pawl pivotally attached to the wall of said cover, the free end of said pawl being in contact with said wheel, and an actuating pawl pivotally attached to the arm of said stamp, the free end of said pawl being in contact with said wheel, and adapted to lift said holding pawl; and a cam rotatably secured in said cover adapted when manually rotated one half turn to engage said actuating pawl and release and hold both pawls from contact with said wheel until by manual rotation or one half turn, said cam is released from contact with said actuating pawl, and said pawls fall into contact with said wheel.
7. In a hand stamp having a base and cover, the combination with said cover of an inking ribbon mechanism supported therein consisting of a pair of ribbon holding shafts, a ratchet wheel rigidly secured on one of said shafts, a holding pawl pivotally at tached to said cover in free contact with said wheel, an actuating pawl pivotally attached to the platen arm of said stamp in free contact with said wheel, a cam rotatably supported in said cover, adapted when rotated to lift said pawls from contact with said wheel, means outside of said cover whereby said cam is rotated, and means for retaining said cam in position when holding said pawls from contact with said wheel, and when said cam is not in contact with said pawls, as and for the purpose described.
8. In a hand stamp, an interior inking ribbon mechanism consisting of a pair of spool shafts, a ratchet wheel rigidly fixed on one of the said shafts, a holding pawl, and an actuating pawl in contact with said wheel, said pawl being adapted when raised to engage and raisesaid holding pawl, and a mechanism rotatably secured in said stamp adapted when manually moved a half turn to engage and lift said actuating pawl and to thereby raise said holding pawl, whereby said pawls are held out of contact with said wheel, until by manual movement of said mechanism one half turn said pawls are released and fall into contact with said wheel as described.
9. In a hand stamp having a ribbon actuating and holding mechanism, means for connecting and disconnecting said holding and actuating mechanism, said means consisting of a cam rotatably and slidably secured in said stamp, a spring supported between the interior wall of said stamp and head of said cam, a button fixed on said cam and held by the pressure of said spring against the exterior wall of said stamp whereby said cam is normally secured in the position in which it is placed, as described.
10. In a hand stamp having a ribbon holding and ribbon actuating mechanism adapted to be connected and disconnected, means for connecting and disconnecting said mechanism, said means consisting of a cam rotatably and slidably secured transversely in the wall of the body of said stamp, a spring on said cam compressed between the head of the cam and interior of said wall, a button fixed on the end of said cam normally pressed against the exterior of said wall by the pressure of said spring, said button having a radial projection on its face in contact with said wall, said projection being adapted to enter radial indents in said wall whereby said cam is slidably held in the position in which it can be placed by manual rotation, as described.
11. In a hand stamp of the kind described having a base, a dating wheel shaft therein, a cover pivotally supported on said base, a pair of ribbon spools supported in said cover and a roll of ribbon supported on said spools; of an indicator mechanism consisting of a screw extending transversely through the side wall and into the interior body of said base beneath said dating Wheel shaft an external hand and an internal lever press the transverse extension of said lever adapted to oscillate on said screw, said lever against the under surface of said roll of having a transverse extension adapted tobe ribbon as described.
