I-IANDCUFF AND LIKE LOCK.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Aug. 15, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE CAVENEY, of the city of Oakland, county of Alameda, State of California, United States of America, machinist, having invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handcuffs and Like Locks, dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

This invention relates to improvements in hand-cuffs, the object of the invention being to produce such a hand-cuff as can be readily, quickly and easily engaged on the wrists and instantly and automatically locked in the desired position, and one which cannotin any manner become unlocked except by a person other than the person handcuffed and which when it is desired to unlock the same it can be done easily and quickly, this present application being designed as an improvement over my issued United States Patent #948,310, dated February 8, 1910, the main improvement shown and described being a double lock to hold the swingingarm in fixed position with no movement either way after it is locked.

A further object of the invention is to produce such a device as will be simple and inexpensive and yet one which would be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.

The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of my improved hand-cuffs. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a lock of the handcuff with the swinging arm shown. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a locking and unlocking disk and cam. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a locking plunger. Fig. 6 is a sectional view' of the same. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of a cap.

Referring more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, 1 designates the main body of the cuff, which is the bottleneck type and 2 is the swinging arm connected to said body 1, as at 3, such arm having locked indentations or teeth 4 on its under edge at its outer end.

In the body 1 is a longitudinal deep recess 5 and above this is a recess 6 of greater diameter than said recess 5, there being openings or slots 7 opening through the sides of the member 1 into said recess 6, whereby the swinging arm 2 passes through said recess 6 to form the cuff around the wrist, such arm 2 also passing through a groove 8 in a locking plunger 9, movable in said recess 6, there being a beveled catch 10 secured in the bottom of said plunger, the arm 2 being held in normal locked position in said recess 6 by reason of the engagement of the beveled edge a of the catch 10 with one of the teeth 4, the normal position of said catch 10 being maintained by means of a spring 11 disposed in the recess 5 and bearing against a collar 12 and the catch 10.

On the, upper edge of the plunger 9 and spaced apart are projectingsloping lugs 13,

while curving cams 14: on a disk 15 repose normally between said lugs until such time as it is desired to unlock the cuff and then said disk 15 is turned by means of a key operating a pin 16 on said disk 15, which action causes such cam 14E to engage the lugs 13 and move them downward, which causes the plunger 9 to engage the collar 12'and move the catch 10 downward out of engagement with the teeth 4, which permits the arm 2 to be readily withdrawn from the member 1, thus releasing the wrist from the wit. The parts may then be turned to normal operative position by turning the disk 15 to disengage the cam 14 fromthe lugs 13 which permits the spring 11 to return the parts to normal position.

When the locked position above described is reached it may be maintained so as to prevent the arm 2 from moving in either direction by means of a hook 17 on one of the cams 14:, which hook engages a recess 18 in one of the lugs 13, thus preventing the plunger 9 carrying the locking catch 10 from being moved downward to release the arm 2 until the same is done by the key which releases the hook 17 from therecess 18 and causesthe cams 14 to move over the said arm 2 as desired. This prevents picking of the lock or movement of the arm 2 by any person not having a key to the cuff and thus makes the cuff an absolutely safe one for the purpose for which it would be used.

The disk 15 is maintained in the recess 6 by means of a cap 19 rigidly secured in the top of said recess 6 and provided with a recess 20 into which the pin 16 projects. 7 4 The plunger 9 is prevented from turning by a pin 21 projecting into a groove 22 in said plunger,

The upper end of the pin 16 is threaded to receive a threaded key, thus, in view of the recess 18, rendering it almost impossible for any person Wearing the cuffs to tamper with the lock.

What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A handcufl' comprising a body having a longitudinal recess, a plunger movable in said recess, a catch carried by said plunger, projecting lugs on the upper end of said plunger, a cam in said recess adapted to engage said lugs, means for turning said cam, an arm on said body adapted to project through said recess and engage said catch, and means for locking said plunger against vertical movement in said recess.

2. A handcufi comprising a body having a recess, a plunger movable in said recess, lugs on said plun 'er, a disk having cams movable over said ugs, means for engaging .and having lugs with undercut flanges, a

spring pressed catch secured in said plunger to engage and hold the slidable member, and a turnable cam with a hook-shaped lug to engage the flange of the plunger lug and lock the slidable member against movement in either direction.

4:. The combination in a lock, of a main chambered part having a transverse slot, a notched member slidable through the slot, a plunger movable in the chamber and having a hook-shaped lug or lugs at the end, a spring pressed catch secured in said plunger to engage the notches of the slidable member, a cam with hook-shaped lugs to engage and lock wit-h'the plunger lug, and a socket to receive a key by which the cam may be turned to unlock and retract the catch.

In testimony whereof I' aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.

GEORGE OAVENEY.
