specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 15, 1911.
Application led September 13, 1910. Serial No. 581,926.
To all whom it may concern: f
Beit known that I, JOHN SEVERIN ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the township of Marble, in the county of Lincoln and State of Minnesota, and whose post-oflice address is Canby, Yellow Medicine county, Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Traps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in traps and has for its object: l, to provide a trap, (of a cylindrical type for catching fur bearing animals), which will not choke nor break the legs of the game, as is the case when caught in the most of the common traps; 2, to provide a trap which will catch the game when either going out of or into their dens.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of m invention, Figure I is a perspective view t ereof; Fig. II is a detailed side view of the longitudinal bars, its pivoted spring, supported inwardly projecting points, and the spring supported bait-holder mounted on same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The semi-circular parts a longitudinal bars o the spring-supported hinge-pin c and the lock pin d, constitute the main frame of the trap. Between the longitudinal bars o are eXtra rods, c, runningparallel with the bars Y) to make a closer trap so the game cannot escape through the sides. To the longitudinal bars Z) are securely connected the semi-circular parts c one on each end, making two half cylinders. These two half cylinders are pivotally connected by hinge-pin c On pin c is a spring f, secured with its ends to the bars Z) Inside of the semi-circular parts a and to the longitudinal bars b are pivotally mounted springsupported points g in a semi-vertical relation to the circle, and in line with the bars b and supported by springs t.
To provide against accidental opening of the trap, a lock pin Z is inserted through the holes or eyes of the semi-circular parts a at the opposite side of the trap from hinge-pin c. 'Ihe lock-pin is secured to one of the longitudinal bars o by means of a chain z' which has rings y' for the purpose of fastening the trap, if desired.
To one of the longitudinal bars o is pivotally mounted a spring-supported baitholder 7c which can be tilted to any position parallel with the longitudinal bars Z) and will be held in any position by spring Z as shown in Fig. II.
Explanation: It will be seen that when the game enters the trap from either end the points g which are pivotally connected to said trap, as shown,fwill by the slightest pressure spread apart, thus making it easy for the game to enter said opening, and at the opposite end the points will not open, as the pressure of the game from the inside of the trap will hold them firmly in the position shown in Fig. I. If the .game attempts to baok out the springs h will actuate said points g pressing the ends gently against the game, and the harder the game pulls backward the tighter the point will grip. To remove the game from said trap, pull out lock-pin 0l, and the trap will be free to the action of the hingeddevice.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination in a trap of a cylindrical formation, of four semi-circular parts pivotally connected by a hinge-pin, to form two circles, longitudinal bars secured to said semi-circular parts, a number of inwardly projecting points, g, pivotally mounted inside of said circles, a spring upon said hinge-pin for closing the semicircles and means for locking same when in a closed position, in the manner shown and described.
2. The combination in a trap of a cylindrical formation, having semi-cylindrical parts pivotally connected along one side, of a number of inwardly projecting points, g, pivotally mounted inside the ends of said semi-cylindrical parts, and means for resiliently supporting said points to partially close the opening of said trap, and means to retain the semi-cylindrical parts in a closed position, in the manner described.
3. The combination in a trap of a cylindrical formation, of two semi-cylindrical1k parts, each composed of two semi-circles joined by longitudinal bars, hinge-pin to connect one side of said parts, a spring upon said pin to close said parts, a lock pin for said parts connected to said tmp by means of a Chain, a number of inwardly projecting' points, 9, pivotally mounted inside the ends of sidsemi-oylindrioal parts, and
a bait-holder pivotally mounted fit the oe'nter of one of said longitudinal bars, which l0 is adjustable at different angles with the .ban substantially as specified;
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
