WINDOW-SCREEN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER D. WALKER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention resides in the provision of a construction of the above type which can be readily installed and, which when in its positions of use and non-use will serve to exclude rain or other fo-reign substances from the screen receiving chamber.
A further object is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive construction which can be secured against movement from the receiving chamber, the same when so positioned serving to effectively close the mouth of the latter.
Other objects will be set forth as my description progresses and those features on which I desire protection, succinctly deinved in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of the window frame and lower sash equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof illustrating the sash as partly raised, and the screen secured in its posit-ion of non-use and provided with suitable packing, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on small scale taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
For the purpose of illustration I have shown my invention applied to the lower sash, as 1, which operates in a window frame 2, of any well known or suitable construction, for supporting the sash for sliding vertically therein. Window frame 2 is provided in its sill 3 with an opening 4, forming the mouth of an underlying chamber 5, for the screen 6, the said mouth extending into communication with the slideways 7 provided for the sash.
The frame of screen 6 is formed of bars grooved to provide seating portions for the wire fabric, as shown, and in carrying out my invention, I provide the upper of these bars with an angular extension 8 which projects outwardly to have bearing on the window sill when the sash is in closed position. In providing this bar of the screen and said extension 8, a blank of sheet metal is bent to provide substantially U-shaped angularly Specification of Letters Patent.

disposed parts, connected at the adjacent longitudinal edge portions of t-he open sides, and fitted in respective rabbets 9, formed in the under and inner side faces of the lower rail of sash 1.
The lower or under wall of extension 8 is relatively short and this has its free edge portion bent upwardly to engage the companion wall and thereby serve to maintain a proper spacing between the two and insure of the said lower extension wall having snug engagement with sill 3 when the sash is closed. Further, by this construction, said short wall provides a retaining means for suitable packing, as 10, (see Fig. 2), arranged for engagement with the sill forltovardly of the mouth 4E of the screen cham- Reference numeral 11 indicates outwardly flared openings formed in the top bar of screen 6, these openings being provided in pairs, the component openings of these pairs being formed in respective walls of said top bar and registering, whereby a securing means 12, in the form of wood screws can be seated therein for engagement with either the sash or the window sill, in which latter instance it is engaged directly with the stop 14.
Extension 8 can, of course, be provided with packing 10 at all times, but this safe guard is particularly desired when the sash can be elevated or opened to a position from over the screen, as will be readily understood.
In practice, storage of screen 6 is effected by first disengaging screws 12 fromsash 1, then, if packing 10 has not been previously provided, inserting a strip of suitable flexible material between the walls of extension 8, the lower or shorter of these walls being bent down to permit of this, after which the screen is lowered into chamber 5 until eXtension bears on sill 3. Screws 12 are` then passed through the openings 11 from the opposite side of the screen so as to engagein stop 14.- of the window sill..
Various changes can be made in the minor details of construction, as fall within the scope of my annexed claims. Further, I wish it understood that, if desired, both upper and lower sash of a window can be provided with screens, connected therewith, in accordance with my invention, for movement to and from their operative positions.
Having thus fully described my inven- :ytionf'what' Iielaim as new and desire to se- 'cure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. In apparatus of the character described, a frame having a sash slidably supported therein and being formed in one end section With a slot, ,a screen extending through the slot of said frame, one end rail of said sash being formed in one end face and one side face With rabbets, one bar of the frame of said screen being seated in one rabbet of said sash, an angular extension on said bar seated in the other rabbet of said sash, said extension being substantially U- shape and having one of its Wall portions arranged for engagement with said frame when the sash is closed, and means removably securing said screen to said sash.
2. In apparatus of the character described, a Window frame provided on its sill With a stop, a sash slidably supported in said frame for engagement With said stop and formed in the lower and inner faces of its bottom rail with communicating rabbets, said sill being formed With a slot arranged in proximity to and parallel With the said stop thereof, .a screen projecting through the slot of said sill and having its top bar seated in one rabbet of said sash, said top bar being formed With openings for securing means, said openings iiaring toward each side of the screen, securing means engaged in the openings of said top bar adapted to be engaged With either said sash or said stop of the Window 'frame sill, and an extension on said top bar of the screen having a downturned portion arranged to engage said Window frame sill outwardly of the slot thereof to guard the latter against ingress of foreign substances.
Signed at Seattle, Washington this 20 day of September 1910. i
