ATTACHMENT role norsrruo-nnorus AND winches.
To all whom 'it. may concern: H
Be it known that I, CLAYTON E. FREDER- ICKSOX, residing in Coalinga. in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Attachments for Hoisting-Drums andlYinches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to pro ride an attachment for winches and hoisting drums designed particularly for use in well drills, whereby the driller can raise or lower the rotary drilling apparatus by hand so as to enable him to drill throughout the small est fraction of an inch.
It. is necessary when drilling with a rotary drill through rock that has a pitch, from the horizontal, to just permit the bit to touch at the beginning of the drilling operation until the bit gets a full cutting start or else the bit creeps to one side or the other thereby causing a crooked hole, 2'; 6. one notdirectcd vertically downward.
The invention resides in providing a large gear"ou the side ofthe drum or on the drum shaft. and a worm gear on 'a shaft one end of which shaft is pivoted while the other end is mounted in a rise and fall bearing and carries a hand wheel and crank so that the drum may be turned when the worm and gear are in mesh, or when the hand power is not used the worm shaft may be swung up to unmesh the worm and the gear, means being provided forholding the rise and fall bearing in either of its positions.
In its more subordinate nature, the invention also includes those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts all of which will first be fully described and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which,
' Figure 1, is a perspective of the hoisting drum to which my invention applies. Fig, 2, is an end elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and at are detail views of the rise and fall bearing and its support.
- Referring now to. the accompanying drawings in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 designates the bed frame of the hoisting drum mechanism on 'which the usual standard bearings 2 are carried, the
bearings 2 receive the drum shaft 3 on which Specification of Letters Eateat. Patented ihllilga 8, 1211, Appfication filed number 19, 1910. Serial No. 585,856.
the drive gear 4 is secured. lhe gear 4 is driven from any suitable source of power through a chain 5 or the equivalent structure.
6 is cable drum on which the cable 31 that carries the well drilling tool is wound, the drum 6 being secured to turn with the shaft 8 and has a brake hub 7 around which a brake band 8 passes, the brake band 8 having one end 9, fixed and its other end 10 secured to the arm 11 of a brake operating lever 13 which is mounted in bearings 12 on the bed plate of the'machine.
1e designates a master worm gear secured to the shaft 3, and drum 6 at one side and the master gear 1% meshes with a worm 21 on a worm shaft 19 which has a ball end 18 to operate in the ball socket 20 of a bearing 17 that is supported on a bracket 15 on the bed frame 1 of the machine. A second bracket 15 opposite the first bracket 15 supports a standard 16 in which the rise and fall bearing block 22 is mounted, the block 22 having lateral projections 23 whose edges are curved and fit into the runways of the standard 16, the bearing block 22 being secured in either of its upper or lower positions by set screws 25 that pass through either the upper or lower apertures 27 and 29 respectively of the standard 16.
On the front end the shaft 19 carries a hand wheel 29 on which is the crank 30 through the medium of which the worm shaft 19 maybe turned.
In practice the cable 31 is wound up on the drum 6 by the power applied through the chain 5 after which the brake band 8 is gripped onto the hub 7 to hold the drum 6 stationary. The operator then ,lowers the worm 21 into engagement with the gear 14 drum remaining stationary so long as the The operator may shaft 19 is not turned. now either let out on the cable 31 or take in on the cable 31 as much as desired by simply turning the hand wheel 29 thus it will be seen thatthe speed of the cable 31 may be regulated to insure the proper starting of the cutting apparatus. V
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the smallest degree and drum on said drum shaft,
it-is thought the complete'construction, operation and advantages of my invention Will be readilyv apparent.
Claim:
.In an apparatus of the character described, a bed frame having main bearings, a drum shaft mounted in said bearings, a a master gear on said drum shaft, a pair of supports supported from said bed frame, a Socket carried by one support a slide bearing carried by the othersupport, a Worm shaft mounted i,000,0ea
in said slide bearing and having a ball end mounted in said s0cket,aw'0rm on said Worm shaft to mesh With said gear, a hand Wheel 15 for turning said worm shaft, and means for holding the said slide bearing in either of its posit-ions to retain said Worm in mesh with said gear or out of mesh with said gear as the case may be.
