Abstract
A method for visualizing the sciatic nerve comprises the instrumental examination with longitudinal reconstruction. The ultrasonic examination is performed in prone or lateral position. The systematic ultrasonic transverse or longitudinal scanning involves the sciatic area and the posterior femoral area. When the elongated structure with the typical fascicular pattern is detected, the probe is displaced cranially to the level of the sciatic fold, and the transverse scanning is performed in the sciatic area in the projection of the piriform muscle. Then the nerve is traced to the popliteal space for the final verification.
