Abstract

The present invention relates to an active matrix-type liquid crystal display device, wherein pixels formed by scanning lines, image signal wires, pixel electrodes and active devices are formed on a substrate. The oriented film on the substrate is formed directly or via the insulating film, and arranged opposite to the color filter formed with the oriented film of liquid crystal on the other side. A liquid crystal layer is held between the aforementioned two substrates. The aforementioned electrodes and active devices are constructed to physically apply an electric field parallel with the substrate corresponding to the liquid crystal layer. The aforementioned electrodes and active devices are subsequent to an external control means corresponding to a display shape capable of arbitrarily controlling the applied electric field. The active matrix-type liquid crystal display device is characterized in having means of changing the optical feature based on the orientation status of the liquid crystal layer by making an lateral electric field shape formed by a liquid crystal drive electrode and a common electrode so as to become the distribution making a center of a pixel a line symmetry axis.
