Abstract

A method for antimicrobially treating printed matter, which is characterized in coating a varnish containing a powderous antimicrobial agent or an aqueous solution or aqueous suspension of an antimicrobial agent on a printed paper printed by a conventional process to form a layer of the antimicrobial agent on the outermost layer of the printed paper, in which the amount of antimicrobial agent used per 100 weight parts of the varnish, water or printing ink is 2.5 to 5 weight percent, and the antimicrobial agent is selected from silver, benzalkonium or hexadecyl pyridinate which can be inserted or ion-exchanged with a phosphate.
