Description

The amalgam metallurgy construction of an electrolyzer with bipolar inclusion of electrodes consisting of several sections has the disadvantage that the amalgam resides in each section and can only be cleaned of more electronegative metal impurities. More electropositive impurities accumulate in the amalgam and, at a certain concentration and current density, are transferred to the cathode sediment of the metal to be refined. The amalgam in the section is replaced manually, which results in electrolyte loss. In addition, the existing anode and cathode of the existing electrolytic cell are horizontally arranged, and this leads to the growth of cathode deposits to the anode and the ingress of mercury and impurities into the refined metal.
The proposed electrolyzer lishchen these disadvantages. The cascade arrangement of amalgam bipolar electrodes between the amalgam anode and the point cathodes makes it possible to easily replace the amalgam in each section and obtain a high purity metal.
The electrolyzer consists of four sections cascaded (see drawing). The first section / serves as the anode space where a refined metal amalgam is prepared. The second 2, third 3 and fourth 4 sections have bipolar amalgam electrodes 5. The sections are separated by figured partitions 6 that do not reach the bottom. The bipolar electrodes 5 serve as hydraulic gates and prevent the mixing of electrolytes in different sections. Mixing the amalgam of the bipolar electrodes and the amalgam anode is carried out with a stirrer 7, with segmental notches, and the electrolyte with square loops located in the middle part of the stirrer.
Section 4, in addition to the bipolar electrode 5, also has lower pin contact cathodes 8. The mixer has a hydraulic shutter 9 for amalgam. A constant current is applied to the anode 10 and the pin cathodes.
