Abstract
The invention concerns a method of producing a joint between two similar or identical high-voltage power cables. When a high-voltage cable 2 with an inner semiconductor layer 5 encased in a cross-ply PE insulation 4 is to be joined according to conventional procedures the curing process is fairly time-consuming. According to conventional methods there is only a single route through which air which is trapped in the PE insulation and gases which are formed internally in the PE insulation during curing can escape, namely outwards through the outer surface of the insulation. By introducing a gas-permeable inner semiconductor layer at the location of the joint this invention provides an alternative escape route, namely inwards - radially through the semiconductor layer 6 at the site of the joint - and later in a longitudinal direction through the core of the cable 3. The curing time can thereby be reduced significantly. Various types of gas-permeable inner semiconductor layers 6 are described. <IMAGE>
