Abstract

1525959 Amorphous alloys WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 21 Oct 1975 [21 Oct 1974] 43109/75 Heading C7A and C7N An amorphous alloy is the ferromagnetic body of an electromagnetic device which comprises a body with at least one electrically conductive path magnetically coupled to it. The amorphous alloy is a low magnetostrictive metallic alloy having the general composition where (1) T is selected from Ni, Cr, Mn, V, Ti, Mo, W, Nb, Zr, Pd, Pt, Cu, Au, Ag or combinations thereof (2) X is selected from P, Si, B, C, As, Ge, Al, Ga, In, Sb, Bi or Sn or combinations thereof (3) 0.7#i#0.9 (4) 0.7#a#0.97 (5) 0.03 # b # 0À25 (6) a + b + c = 1 (7)i+j= 1 Examples of the alloys which are produced by extremely rapid cooling from the melt e.g. "splat" cooling are (a) (Co 0.9 Fe 0.1 ) 0.75 P 0.16 B 0.06 Al 0.03 (b) (Co 0.95 Fe 0.05 ) 0.75 P 0.16 B 0.06 Al 0.03 (c) (Co 0.96 Fe 0.04 ) 0.75 P 0.16 B 0.06 Al 0.03 (d) (Co 0.72 Fe 0.08 Ni 0.2 ) 0.75 P 0.16 B 0.06 Al 0.03 (e) (C 0.76 Fe 0.04 Ni 0.2 ) 0.75 P 0.16 B 0.06 Al 0.03 . The alloy may be heat-treated in a magnetic field at a temperature below its crystallization temperature i.e. 270 C in a helium atmosphere to improve the magnetic properties; and may be used for transformers.
