Abstract

1492046 Block copolyetheramides SUN VENTURES Inc 14 Nov 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 49282/74 Heading C3R A copolymer of improved moisture absorption properties has a M.W. of 5,000 to 100,000 and comprises components (a) and (b) where (a) is blocks n(A), m(B), p(C) and q(D) derived from a preformed dietherdiamine copolyamide comprising units (A) (B) -CO-R 5 -CO- and at least one of (C) -CO-R 6 -NH and (D) -NH-R 7 -NH- where n=1 to 10, m=1 to 10, p and q=0 to 10 but if p = 0 then n + q = m; R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are independently H, C 1-10 alkyl or isoalkyl; R 4 and R 5 are C 1-10 alkylene or isoalkylene; and R 6 and R 7 are C 5-11 alkylene; and (b) is blocks (E) of bivalent radicals of a melt spinnable polyamide derived from a preformed polymer, the weight ratio of (a) : (b) being 0À05 to 1À5. It is stated that such block copolymer results from melt blending the preformed polymer at a controlled time and temperature insufficient for randomization. In specific examples a copolymer (a) of 4,7-dioxadecamethylene adipamide and caprolactam is melted with (b) nylon 6 for 30 minutes at 295‹ C.; the molecular weight and structure of the product is not specified. Reference is made to Specification 562,370 which relates to a process for producing polyamides of enhanced water absorption properties by heating in the molten state at least 2 preformed polyamides, one being water soluble and the other water insoluble until a homogeneous melt, from which not more than 10% of the water soluble polymer can be extracted, is obtained but does not specify the M.W. or structure of the products. The soluble polyamide may be a homo- or co-polyamide containing oxygen atoms in the chain, exemplified inter alia by poly-4,7-dioxadecamethylene adipamide, and the insoluble polyamide may be, inter alia nylon 6 or 66; in most examples melt blending is at 285‹ C. for 30 minutes.
