Abstract

Binder for a Nickel rich cathode. There is disclosed a cathode for a Li-ion battery, wherein the cathode comprises a) a cathode active material and b) a binder, wherein the cathode active material comprises Nickel in an amount of more than 50 wt% calculated as the weight of Nickel in relation to the sum of the weight of all constituents in the cathode active material except Lithium, wherein the binder comprises poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and polyvinyl butyral (PVB), wherein the binder is present in an amount of 0.5 - 2.5 wt% calculated as the weight of the binder in relation to the total weight of the cathode. The problem with cracking of Nickel rich cathodes is at least alleviated so that they are less prone to crack for instance during calendaring and winding. Further the technology does not require use of solvents such as NMP and is thus more environmentally friendly and involves less costs.
