Abstract

(Fig. 1) The present description relates to a process for recovering monovalent metal from a sulphidic material. The process involves subjecting the sulfide material to a hydrometallurgical step followed by selective separation of elemental sulfur from the metallurgical residue before a final metal recovery step, such as cyanide leaching. The process improves the overall process economy and reduces cyanide consumption as a result of the selective separation of elemental sulfur. (Fig. 1)

Description

534 315 2 However, it has been found that even smaller amounts of elemental sulfur contained in the biolacured material cause problems in a subsequent cyanide leaching process for the extraction of precious metals, and extraction of gold and other precious metals from biooxidation residues has therefore historically been associated with high cyanide consumption.

Lawson, The role of the enzyme rhodanese in oyanide consumption for gold extraction from bacteria/ty leached refractory ores, |BS'97 Conference proceedings, Biomine International Conference, 4-6 augusti 1997, beskriver att enzymet rhodanes katalyserar bildning av tiocyanat. There has been a debate over the years regarding the role of the enzyme rhodanes and how it affects cyanide consumption. Lawson, The role of the enzyme rhodanese in oyanide consumption for gold extraction from bacteria / ty leached refractory ores, | BS'97 Conference proceedings, Biomine International Conference, 4-6 August 1997, describes that the enzyme rhodanes catalyzes the formation of thiocyanate.

However, Gardner m fl, Production of rhodanese by bacteria present in bio-oxidation plants used to recover gold from arsenopyrite concentrates, Journal of Applied Microbiology 2000, 89, 185-190, describes that it is not clear whether rhodanese activity contributes significantly to the loss of cyanide in the gold extraction process or whether this loss is solely a result of chemical reactions. Gardner concludes that it is possible that the loss of cyanide is directly related to chemical reactions and only indirectly to biological effects.

Dessutom beskriver Aswegen m fl, New developments in Bacterial Oxidation Technology to Enhance the Efficiency of the BIOX® Process, Bac-Min Conference, Benigo, Vic, 8-10 november 2004, att test har visat att elementärt svavel och andra intermediära svaveloxidationsämnen är de huvudsakliga cyanidkonsumenterna. In addition, Aswegen m fl, New developments in Bacterial Oxidation Technology to Enhance the Efficiency of the BIOX® Process, Bac-Min Conference, Benigo, Vic, 8-10 November 2004, describes that tests have shown that elemental sulfur and other intermediate sulfur oxidants are the main cyanide consumers.

Thus, it is well known that the elemental sulfur content of a bio-residue product from mesophilic or moderate thermophilic biooxidation could be the main consumer of cyanide in a cyanidation process by formation of thiocyanate (SCN ').

It is also known that thiocyanate can be formed by cyanolysis of thiosalts formed in grinding, totation and cyanide leaching processes by oxidation or disproportionation of elemental sulfur and pyrite. Thus, in order to minimize the consumption of cyanide in a recovery process without impairing the recovery of valuable metals, it is thus necessary to overcome the problem of elemental sulfur and reduced inorganic sulfur compounds.

In addition to the high direct operating cost of the soluble elemental sulfur content of the sulfidic material, the formed thiocyanate, reduced inorganic sulfur compounds and any residual elemental sulfur in the liquor residue product from the cyanidation process can have an overall negative environmental impact. SCN 'is a fairly stable compound, which decomposes slowly to sulphate, carbon dioxide / carbonate and ammonium / ammonia under oxidizing conditions. It has also been found that SCN 'will pass through a conventional cyanide destruction process such as the INCO process. In order to decompose SCN 'quickly and completely, Caro's acid (H2SO5) must be applied and neutralized, which contributes to a high operating cost.

Any residual SCN 'in wastewater from a waste pond may be a potential acid producer and oxygen consumer. In addition, since all conventional cyanide / thiocyanate destruction processes result in soluble nitrogen substances, minimizing the rate of cyanide addition is of great interest in reducing the nitrogen load on the recipient. Furthermore, elemental sulfur in bio-residue products is also undesirable because it can encapsulate, for example, gold particles and thereby slow down the leaching rate of precious metals. Any residual elemental sulfur discharged to landfills or other landfills can also be harmful in the long run due to its instability in water under neutral and alkaline conditions.

Lindström m fl, A sequentia/ two-set process using moderate/y and extremely thermophilic cultures for biooxidation of refractory gold concentrates, Hydrometallurgy 71 (2003) 21-30, beskriver en sekventiell tvåstegs biolakningsprocess för guldinnehållande refraktära pyrit-/arsenikkiskoncentrat. Lindström m fl, A sequentia / two-set process using moderate / y and extremely thermophilic cultures for biooxidation of refractory gold concentrates, Hydrometallurgy 71 (2003) 21-30, describes a sequential two-stage bioleaching process for gold-containing refractory pyrite / arsenic concentrates. A moderately thermophilic culture was used in the first stage and an extremely thermophilic culture, S. metallicus, was used in the second stage. It was found, among other things, that the cyanide consumption during cyanidation of the leached mineral residues was significantly reduced by the two-step bio-leaching process compared to a process involving a single bio-leaching step using a moderately thermophilic culture. Lindström concluded that this was probably due to a lower final concentration of cyanide-reactive sulfur compounds after biooxidation with S. metallicus and / or the fact that fewer microorganisms were attached to the mineral residue product.

In recent years, there has been a focus on research on bio-leaching processes for copper extraction from copper ice, which is the mineral that contains the main copper reserves in the world. A major obstacle to an efficient process for bio-leaching of copper ice is the formation of a barrier layer over the surface of the mineral which prevents the passage of the chemical oxidant. This phenomenon is often called passivation or hindered dissolution. It has recently been discovered that a thick layer of elemental sulfur is initially formed on the surface of the minerals. Leaching can sometimes continue for a while due to de-icing of the sulfur layer, although the leaching rate is generally low. After a while, a permanent jarosite layer forms and the leaching stops.

In order to achieve an efficient process for leaching copper ores or concentrates so that leaching of copper ice can reach its full potential, it is necessary to overcome the problem of passivation.

Klauber, C. 2008. Klauber, C. 2008. Int J Min Process 86: 1-17, states that the formation of elemental sulfur remains a systemic phase in connection with high bio-leaching but is not a problem of any consequence for systems with mixed culture unlike jarosit, which causes real problems with obstructed resolution. According to Klauber, the conclusion is that there are three ways to prevent real passivation, namely to prevent jarosite formation by maintaining a very low pH in the process, to cause jarosite to self-precipitate and not coat the copper ice, and to separate iron from the pile. According to Klauber, iron regulation by jarosite precipitation would be the preferred approach. Thus, in accordance with the conclusions reached by Klauber, the problem of passivation or obstruction of copper ice appears to be only to a lesser extent related to elemental sulfur. However, this remains to be investigated further. Summary The object of the invention is to overcome, or at least significantly reduce, the problems associated with elemental sulfur in hydrometallurgical residues which are subjected to downstream processing to recover a valuable metal.

The object is achieved by the process of extracting a valuable metal from a sol material disic material which comprises said valuable metal in accordance with the independent claim 1. Embodiments of the process are denoted by the dependent claims.

According to a first aspect of the invention, the process comprises the steps of subjecting the sulphidic material to at least a first hydrometallurgical step and subjecting the discharged slurry to a solid / liquid separation step so as to obtain a metallurgical residue, subjecting the metallurgical residue a step of selectively separating elemental sulfur, wherein said step of selectively separating elemental sulfur is performed at a pH of 3.0 or higher, and subjecting the metallurgical residue to a final metal recovery step after said second leaching step.

The first hydrometallurgical step is preferably a biopainting step, but may also be any other hydrometallurgical step conventionally used in the treatment of sulfuric materials to enable the recovery of valuable metals, such as autoclaving.

It will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that even reduced inorganic sulfur compounds can be selectively separated during the step of selective separation of elemental sulfur. According to a second aspect of the invention, the process of recovering a valuable metal from a sulphidic material comprises the steps of subjecting the sulphidic material to at least a first hydrometallurgical step, for example a bio-leaching step, and subjecting the slurry from the hydrometallurgical step to a step of separating solid material / liquid so as to obtain a metallurgical residue, to subject the metallurgical residue to a biooxidation step for selective separation of elemental sulfur, said biooxidation step being carried out at a pH of 3.0 or higher, and then to subject the metallurgical residue to a final metal recovery step. Thus, elemental sulfur will be selectively separated by oxidation during said biooxidation step at a pH of 3.0 or higher. In addition, reduced inorganic sulfur compounds will also be selectively separated during the biooxidation step.

According to a preferred embodiment, the biooxidation step for selective separation of elemental sulfur is carried out at a pH value of 3.5-6, preferably at a pH value of 3.8-5.5. In accordance with a third aspect of the invention, the process of recovering a valuable metal from a solidic material comprises the steps of subjecting the solidic material to at least a first hydrometallurgical step, for example a bio-leaching step. and subjecting the slurry from the hydrometallurgical step to a solid / liquid separation step so as to obtain a metallurgical residue, subjecting the metallurgical residue a sulfite leaching step for selective separation of elemental sulfur, said sulfite leaching step being performed at a pH of 3. , 0 or higher, preferably at a pH of at least 3.5, and then subjecting the metallurgical residue to a final metal recovery step. Thus, elemental sulfur will be selectively separated by dissolution during said sulfite leaching step.

Enligt en föredragen utföringsform utförs sulfitlakningssteget vid en temperatur över 25 °C, företrädesvis över 40 °C.According to a preferred embodiment, the salt leaching step is carried out at a temperature above 25 ° C, preferably above 40 ° C.

According to a further preferred embodiment, sulphite is added to the leaching step in an amount which is overstoichiometric in relation to the need for elemental sulfur. Preferably, sulphite is added in an amount of at least 2 times the stoichiometric need for elemental sulfur. In accordance with yet another preferred embodiment, the metallurgical residue is subjected to a thiosulfate leaching step after said sulfite leaching step. The thiosulfate needed in said thiosulfate leaching step can be generated in situ during the sulfite leaching step.

It is an essential feature of the process according to the invention that the step for selective separation of elemental sulfur is carried out at a pH value of at least 3.0 because soluble ferric ions, Fe (μl), are not stable in the solution at such a high pH value. . Thus, the solution will be substantially free of ferric and ferrous ions. When Fe (III) is present in the solution, it will continue to contribute to the formation of elemental sulfur and divalent iron from residual sulphidic material, and a process step for selectively separating sulfur would then be insufficient as there would be a continuous formation of elemental sulfur in parallel with the separation. At pH values around 3.0 and above, however, a major part of Fe (|||) will precipitate and will not affect the solid material in the process. The elemental sulfur can thus be selectively separated by, for example, biooxidation or anaerobic sulphite leaching.

The process of the present invention thus enables efficient separation of elemental sulfur which in turn leads to a markedly improved overall process economy. For example, if the final metal recovery step is a cyanide leaching step, cyanide consumption is significantly reduced. In fact, it has been found that cyanide consumption can be reduced by at least 90% while still achieving maximum gold recovery when leaching sul ical materials containing gold.

The process according to the invention also results in lower costs for destruction of process solution and lower nitrogen load on the recipient, which is desirable from an environmental point of view.

In addition, the leaching speed is improved. For example, it has been found that the initial leaching rate of gold and silver is markedly increased by the separation of elemental sulfur. The residence time during the cyanidation process can also be significantly reduced, which also contributes to the lower cyanide consumption.

Furthermore, it has been found that when leaching copper ice concentrate or ores, the formation of layers of elemental sulfur and / or rosin which normally takes place on the surfaces of the minerals during leaching can be significantly reduced.

All of the advantages identified above are achieved while the amount of valuable metal extracted by the process is nevertheless not reduced compared to previously known processes.

Detailed description The invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings. It should be pointed out, however, that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described below and appears from the drawings, but can be modified within the scope of the claims.

The sulphidic material may be any sulfuric material comprising a noble metal or other precious metals and includes any ore or concentrate which can be hydrometallurgically treated to recover the precious metal, for example biolacase. Such ores or concentrates usually comprise a mixture of your minerals, as well as secondary sulfides, as previously described. The process is particularly suitable for the treatment of refractory gold arsenic ores or concentrates in which the gold is generally enclosed in arsenic ore or sulfur ore. The process can also be used for processing copper ice.

The process of recovering a valuable metal from a sulfuric material according to the invention comprises subjecting the sulphidic material to at least a first hydrometallurgical step. The hydrometallurgical step is preferably a bio-leaching step, for example a continuous bio-leaching process. However, it is possible to use other types of previously known hydrometallurgical steps, such as autoclaving. 534 3'15 When the first hydrometallurgical step is a bio-leaching step, said bio-leaching step is performed according to previously known processes and is thus performed at a pH value of less than 3, typically a pH value equal to or less than 2 , 5, to ensure optimal growth and behavior of the biomass. Any type of biomass suitable for bio-leaching of the sulphidic material can be used, such as mesophilic biomass or thermal biomass. The bio-leaching step could be, for example, a continuous bio-leaching, in which the material is leached continuously in a number of reactors connected in parallel or in series, or a high-leaching step.

Of course, the process may also involve subjecting the sulfuric material to a plurality of biopainting steps or other hydrometallurgical steps in accordance with conventional techniques without departing from the invention. In addition, the process may also include steps preceding the first hydrometallurgical step, such as a preoxidation, if desired. Such steps are also performed in accordance with prior art techniques.

After the sulfuric material has been biolaced or subjected to other hydrometallurgical steps such as autoclaving, the resulting slurry is subjected to a solid / liquid separation step and the solution, for example comprising iron and arsenic, is separated for processing according to prior art techniques. as neutraliserlng.

It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that when the process is a high leaching process, for example for the treatment of copper ores or concentrates, the solid / liquid separation step is a wash-rinse cycle.

The solid material obtained from the solid / liquid separation step, i.e. the metallurgical residue, is then subjected to a step for selective separation of elemental sulfur, said step being performed at a pH of 3.0 or higher. The selective separation of elemental sulfur can be carried out, for example, either by biooxidation or by chemical dissolution.

Due to the fact that the step of selective separation of elemental sulfur is performed at said pH value, the solution will comprise only very small amounts of ferric and ferrous ions, if any. This is important because the ferric ion solution acts as an oxidizing agent to form new elemental sulfur by oxidizing residual sulfide material, such as arsenic or pyrite.

By minimizing the amount of ferric ions in the solution, the risk of new elemental sulfur formation is thus minimized, for example by oxygenation in the presence of microorganisms.

In addition, the fact that the step of selective precipitation of elemental sulfur is carried out at a pH of 3.0 or higher, and at a moderate temperature, provides a considerably less corrosive environment compared to other sulfur or sulfur precipitation processes, such as biooxidation. at a pH of about 2.5, thus reducing the corrosion resistance requirements of the construction materials used.

After the elemental sulfur has been selectively separated, the metallurgical residue is subjected to a final metal recovery step in accordance with prior art techniques. The final metal recovery step may be, for example, a cyanide leaching step, such as a ClL (carbon-in-leach) process, a CIP (carbon-in-pulp) process, a RIP (resin-in-pulp) process and a Merrill -Crowe process. The final metal recovery step may also be a thiosulfate / NH 4 / NH 3 / Cu leaching process or a metal recovery step by cementation.

Of course, the metallurgical residual product may also be subjected to one or more additional steps after said step of selectively separating elemental sulfur but before the final metal recovery step. Such additional steps include, but are not limited to, a solid / liquid separation step, a bioleaching or biooxidation step, a salt leaching step, and a thiosulfate leaching step.

In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the step of selectively separating elemental sulfur is a biooxidation step whereby elemental sulfur is oxidized by means of a suitable biomass. The elemental sulfur is oxidized primarily to SO 42 ", but also to a lesser extent to 82032 'and / or 8.062". The solution comprising these sulfur-containing substances can be separated in a conventional solid / liquid separation step, recycled and used in a previous bio-leaching step if desired. However, it is also possible to omit such a solid / liquid separation step and transfer the slurry from the biooxidation step for selective elemental sulfur separation directly to a final metal recovery step, such as a cyanide leaching step.

The maximum growth rate of biomass may be slightly lower during said biooxidation step for selective precipitation of elemental sulfur compared to a conventional biopainting step due to the higher pH value. To compensate for the lower growth rate of biomass, the biooxidation step could preferably be performed for a longer period of time than if it was operated at a conventional pH value, such as equal to or below 2.5. It has been shown that the relatively limited generation of heat from selective separation of typical levels of residual elemental sulfur may require a longer residence time than that critical for leaching to maintain an appropriate process temperature, due to the actual concentration of elemental sulfur and solids content. material in pulp.

The upper limit of the pH that can be used during the biooxidation step for selective separation of elemental sulfur depends on the type of biomass used. However, it is preferred that the pH be kept below 6 to achieve an efficient process as most types of suitable microorganisms have a very low growth rate above pH 6. Thus, in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the process, the biooxidation step for selective elemental sulfur separation is performed at a pH of 3.5-6, more preferably at a pH of 3.8-5.5.

Sulfitämnen löser upp elementärt svavel i enlighet med följande formler: s° + so? In addition, the biooxidation step should of course be performed without limitation of oxygen and essential nutrients to ensure adequate growth and activity of the biomass. The oxygen is supplied through either air, pure oxygen or oxygen-enriched air. The pH is preferably controlled by the addition of limestone, which will also serve as a carbon dioxide source for growth. Furthermore, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the temperature during the biooxidation step is adapted to the biomass that has primarily been grafted in or developed over time as well as to the actual heat balance. In accordance with a further aspect of the invention, the step of selectively separating elemental sulfur is a sulfite leaching step, preferably operated at a pH of at least 3.5. Sulphite substances dissolve elemental sulfur according to the following formulas: s ° + so? _ »S20; - or s ° + Hso; Sulphite leaching should be carried out in the absence of air so as not to adversely affect the leaching process by undesired oxidation of the remaining sulphic material and added sulphite ions. Thus, the sulfite leaching step is an anaerobic leaching step.

Sålunda drivs sulfitlakningssteget företrädesvis vid en temperatur över 25 °C, hellre vid en temperatur över 40 °C. l enlighet med en föredragen utföringsform drivs sulfitlakningssteget vid en temperatur av åtminstone 50 °C.It has been found that the dissolution rate of sulfur during the leaching step depends on the temperature. Therefore, the leaching should preferably be carried out at an elevated temperature to achieve an efficient process. Thus, the leaching step is preferably operated at a temperature above 25 ° C, more preferably at a temperature above 40 ° C. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the leaching step is operated at a temperature of at least 50 ° C.

Furthermore, it has been found that the sulfur extraction rate depends on the total sulfite addition. Jam should preferably be added in an overstoichiometric amount relative to the elemental sulfur content. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, sulfite is added in an amount of at least 2 times the stoichiometric requirement relative to the elemental sulfur content. Preferably, sulfite is added in an amount of at least 2.5 times the stoichiometric requirement.

In recent years, cyanide leaching has been banned in many regions for environmental reasons. Thiosulphate, in combination with ammonia / ammonium and Cuz fl is generally considered to be the most promising alternative today to cyanide leaching for gold extraction. Thus, since the process involves a thiosulfate leaching step for the recovery of precious metals, it is advantageous from a process economics point of view if thiosulfate could be generated in situ and at the same time separate the undesired residual elemental sulfur. This has been found possible with the process according to the invention, especially if the sulphite leaching is carried out at a pH value of at least 3.5 because the thiosulphate formed is relatively stable under these conditions.

Thus, in accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the sulfite leaching step should preferably be performed at a pH of at least 3.5 to ensure sufficient stability of the thiosulfate formed. It has been found that at sulfur levels that normally occur in bio-leaching residues, the process generates the thiosulphate content that is necessary during the leaching of precious metals.

The sulfite source may be, for example, NagSO 3, NaHSO 3, Na 2 S 2 O 5 or CaO / SO 2.

The resulting leach solution, separated from the sulfite leaching step, comprises reduced inorganic sulfur residues, mainly thiosulfate. The solution may conveniently be recycled back to a previous bio-leaching step such as process water. Alternatively, the solution can be diverted to a separate biooxidation reactor for the destruction of formed thio salts.

Figure 1 schematically illustrates an embodiment of the process according to the invention. A sulfuric material, for example a refractory gold arsenic concentrate, is subjected to a bio-leaching step 1 at a pH of about 1.0-2.0. The slurry from the bioleaching step is transferred to a solid / liquid separation step 2 from which the solution comprising Fe and As is separated for neutralization, as indicated by arrow 3. The solid is subjected to a biooxidation step 4, which is carried out at a pH of at least 3.0 so that the amount of ferric and ferrous ions in the solution is minimized. The redox potential is maintained over the stability domain of elemental sulfur. In the biooxidation step 4, elemental sulfur is thus selectively oxidized at a significantly faster rate than the rate of formation of elemental sulfur or other reduced substances from the goods. The pulp from the biooxidation step 4, and which comprises SO 42 ", as well as smaller amounts of 82032 'and / or 84052-, is transferred as illustrated by the arrow 5 to a cyanide leaching step (CII) 6 in which, for example, the gold is recovered.

Ett sådant sulfitlakningssteg skulle avskilja eventuellt resterande elementärt svavel från biooxidationssteget 4.The cyanide leaching step is typically operated at a pH of about 10.5. Although not illustrated in Figure 1, a sulfite leaching step may be incorporated between the biooxidation step 4 and the cyanide leaching step 6 if desired. Such a leaching step would separate any residual elemental sulfur from the biooxidation step 4.

Cyanidlakningssteget utförs typiskt vid ett pH-värde av cirka 10,5.Figure 2a schematically illustrates another embodiment of the process according to the invention. A sulphidic material, for example a refractory gold arsenic concentrate, is subjected to a bio-leaching step 1 at a pH of about 1.0-2.0. The slurry from the bioleaching step is transferred to a solid / liquid separation step 2 from which the solution comprising Fe and As is separated for neutralization, as indicated by arrow 3. The solid is subjected to a sulfite leaching step 7 at a pH of at least 3. 5, preferably a pH of 3.5-8, to selectively dissolve elemental sulfur. The pulp from the leaching step 7, which comprises 82032 ", is then transferred to a solid / liquid separation step 9 as indicated by the arrow 8. The solution from the separation step 9, which comprises thiosulphate, is recycled back to the initial bioleaching step, as illustrated by the arrow. 534 315 The solid material is transferred to a cyanide leaching step (CIL) 6 in which, for example, the gold is recovered. The cyanide leaching step is typically performed at a pH of about 10.5.

Cyanidlakningssteget utförs typiskt vid ett pH-värde av cirka 10,5.Figure 2b schematically illustrates yet another embodiment of the process according to the invention. The pulp from the leaching step 7, and which mainly comprises 82032-, is then transferred to a biooxidation step 11 which is operated at a pH value of at least 3.0, preferably at a pH value of at least 3.5. The pulp is then subjected to a cyanide leaching step (CIL) 6 in which the gold is recovered. The cyanide leaching step is typically performed at a pH of about 10.5.

Det ytterligare biooxidationssteget 11 kommer dock att oxidera reducerade tiosalter i sulfitlakningslösningen, vilket reducerar cyanidförbrukningen i det efterföljande cyanidlakningssteget då det minimerar bildningen av SCN".Compared with the embodiment shown in Figure 2a, the embodiment shown in Figure 2b does not require the second step 9 for separation of solid material / liquid, which in some cases may be advantageous. However, in the embodiment shown in Figure 2b, an additional biooxidation step is included. However, the additional biooxidation step 11 will oxidize reduced thio salts in the sulfite leaching solution, which reduces the cyanide consumption in the subsequent cyanide leaching step as it minimizes the formation of SCN ".

Figure 3 schematically illustrates yet another embodiment of the process according to the invention. A sulphidic material, for example a refractory gold arsenic concentrate, is subjected to a bio-leaching step 1 at a pH of about 1.0-2.0. The slurry from the bio-leaching step is transferred to a solid 2 / liquid separation step from which the solution comprising Fe and As is separated for neutralization, as indicated by arrow 3. The solid material is subjected to a salt leaching step 7 at a pH of at least 3. 5, preferably a pH of 3.5-8, to selectively dissolve elemental sulfur.

In recent years, cyanide leaching has been banned for environmental reasons in many regions as mentioned above. Thiosulfate, in combination with ammonia and Cuz fl is generally considered to be the most promising alternative to cyanide leaching for gold extraction.

Thus, in accordance with the embodiment shown in Figure 3, the pulp is then transferred from the sulfite leaching step 7, and comprising 82032 ", to a thiosulfate leaching step 12.

The thiosulphate leaching step is conveniently carried out at a pH of about 8-10 and in the presence of Cu 2 and NH 3 / NH 3. The thiosulphate is produced in situ, which has a significant beneficial effect on the total operating cost.

The slurry is then subjected to a solid / liquid separation step 13 and the solid is separated as indicated by the arrow 14.

The solution, comprising Au, Ag, 82032 'and 84062' is transferred as indicated by the arrow 15 to a metal recovery step 16 in which silver and gold are recovered by cementing with eg elemental copper. The solution from the metal recovery step 16 and comprising 82032 'and 34062- is recycled to the bioleaching step 1 as indicated by the arrow 17.

Figure 4 shows an embodiment of the invention in which a copper ice concentrate or ore is leached by high leaching. The process comprises a primary step for copper leaching at a pH below 3. The rich solution is transferred to a rich solution dust and then to a solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX / EW) process, and the acid is reused in the primary stage. The appropriate leaching time for the primary stage is determined empirically. However, tests have indicated that the leaching in the primary stage should preferably be terminated when the first tendency to obstructed copper dissolution occurs.

After the primary stage of copper leaching, a wash / rinse is performed by adding wash-rinse water. The rinsing water can typically be acidic with a low iron content, for example having a pH value of about 2.5-5. The wash solution is diverted to a wash solution pond and then subjected to an iron / aluminum / gypsum separation process.

The washed solid, i.e. the metallurgical residue, is then subjected to a step of selective separation of elemental sulfur. This step is performed at a pH of 3.0 or higher, preferably a pH of at least 3.5. Selective separation of elemental sulfur can be done, for example, by biooxidation using a suitable biomass. However, in accordance with a preferred embodiment, the step of selectively separating elemental sulfur is an anaerobic leaching step. Sulfite should preferably be added in an amount that is overstoichiometric in relation to the need for elemental sulfur, and the step should preferably be done at a temperature of at least 25 ° C. 534 315 17 The leachate is diverted to a leachate pond and the bleed is subjected to a process for gypsum / aluminum separation. The solution can be recycled back to the leachate pond as shown in the figure.

After the step of selectively separating elemental sulfur, the solid material is subjected to a third step of copper leaching at a lower pH value by the action of trivalent iron. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the step of selectively separating elemental sulfur may be repeated after the third step of copper leaching if required, and then followed by yet another step of copper leaching.

The high-leaching process described in Figure 4 differs from previously known high-lacquering processes in that it comprises a step for selective separation of elemental sulfur, which is carried out at a pH value of 3.0 or higher.

Since the elemental sulfur has been selectively separated, the leaching rate during the third stage of copper leaching will be significantly higher compared to if the elemental sulfur had not been selectively separated. In a conventional high leaching process, layers of elemental sulfur and jarosite are formed on the surface of the copper sheet material, thereby preventing the dissolution of the mineral.

However, by selectively separating elemental sulfur, the formation of these types of surface layers during leaching is significantly reduced and thus the leaching rate is improved.

Although Figure 4 relates to high leaching of a copper tar ore or concentrate, other types of sulfidic materials may also be high lacquered by the process of the present invention.

In addition, the process according to the invention can also be a tank leaching process.

Example 1 - Selective separation of sulfur by biooxidation Batch tests for selective separation of sulfur by biooxidation have been performed on bio-residue products obtained from mesophilic bio-leaching of a refractory gold concentrate produced from the Petiknäs Norra deposit.

The biooxidation of the mesophilic bio-residue product was performed batchwise at about -20% solids. A 1-step continuous culture (dilution rate = 0.042 h -1) grown on 1 g of colloidal sulfur per liter at 47 ° C, pH about 3.5 and about 4.5, respectively, was used as inoculation sources. Before the biorest products 534 315 18 were added, the continuous culture was switched to batch operation to completely oxidize the remaining colloidal sulfur to sulfate.

The first batch was post-oxidized for 24 hours at about pH 3.5 and about% solids. However, the actual found solids content of the pulp was about 17%, as there had been an accumulation of gypsum in the reactor.

The final "true" residual product was measured to be about 0.17% S °, corrected for the gypsum dilution given a sulfur separation of about 80%. The complete sulfur separation profile was not determined.

Såsom framgår ur figuren var den maximala graden av svavelomvandling cirka 80 % för 54 h, vilket gav en restsvavelhalt kring 0,25 %.The second batch was biooxidized for about 54 hours at about pH 4.5 and about 20% freight. The resulting sulfur separation profiles are shown in Figure 5. As can be seen from the clock, the maximum degree of sulfur conversion was about 80% for 54 hours, which gave a residual sulfur content of around 0.25%.

A test where biooxidation was combined with subsequent sulphite leaching of the residual sulfur was also performed on a third batch. The third batch was first biooxidized for about 24 hours at a pH of about 4.5 and about 20% solids.

The pulp was then transferred to a glass vessel for leaching at about 60 ° C.

De erhållna svavelavskiljningsprofilerna visas i Figur 6.The rate of addition of NagSgOs was approximately 2.5 times the stoichiometric need for complete dissolution of thiosulfate formation. The resulting sulfur separation coils are shown in Figure 6.

Halten av elementärt svavel i restprodukten var cirka 0,5-0,6 %.Example 2 - Selective separation of sulfur by salt leaching Tests were performed on a bio-residue product from refractory gold concentrate from Petiknâs Norra. The content of elemental sulfur in the residual product was about 0.5-0.6%.

Anhydrous sodium sulfite was used as the salt reagent and NaOH for pH control.

The residue was leached at ambient temperature and about 46-47 ° C at a pulp density of about 1%. Sulfite was added with a large excess compared to the stoichiometric need. The test shows that the bio-residual sulfur content contained was very influential for the leaching conditions and the dissolution rate is temperature dependent. At about 46 ° C, pH 9.3 and 22 hours residence time, the extraction of elemental sulfur was almost complete, about 99.7%. The corresponding extraction at ambient temperature was about 86%. At about 47 ° C, pH 7.8 and 1.5 h residence time, the extraction was about 91%. 534 3'l5 19 Additional tests were performed to examine the leaching rate with respect to temperature and sulfite addition rate. All tests were performed at a pulp solids content of approximately 18% and slaked lime for pH control.

The bio-residue product was taken up from continuous biooxidation on low-grade refractory gold concentrate from Petiknäs Norra. The biooxidation was carried out in one step at a residence time of 45 hours and at meso l temperature. The content of elemental sulfur in the bio-residue product was 0.59%, based on 1.5 h extraction to a solvent with mM NaCN / acetone followed by spectrometric determination via formation of ferritiocyanate complex.

Resultaten visas i Figurerna 7-10. The results are shown in Figures 7-10. It is clear that the sulfur extraction rate depends strongly on temperature and total sulfite addition.

Figur 8 illustrerar svavelomvandlingen som funktion av Iaktiden i timmar vid samma betingelser som i Figur 7.Figure 7 illustrates the residual sulfur content of the bio-residual product as a function of the lactide time in hours. Leaching was performed at a temperature of about 45 ° C and a pH of about 8.5. Sulfite was added in about 1.1 times, 2.3 times, and 3.5 times the stoichiometric requirement (abbreviated in the figure to S.D.). Figure 8 illustrates the sulfur conversion as a function of the leaching time in hours under the same conditions as in Figure 7.

Figur 10 illustrerar svavelomvandlingen som funktion av Iaktiden i timmar vid samma betingelser som i Figur 9.Figure 9 illustrates the residual sulfur content of the bio-residual product as a function of the lactide time in hours. Leaching was performed at a temperature of about 65 ° C and a pH of about 7.5. Sul fit was added in about 1.1 times and 3.3 times the stoichiometric requirement (abbreviated in fi guren to S.D.). Figure 10 illustrates the sulfur conversion as a function of leaching time in hours under the same conditions as in Figure 9.

It was found that the formation of thiosulphate seemed to correspond stoichiometrically to the separation of elemental sulfur from the goods. At high reagent dosages, however, depletion of the sulfite ions from the solution appeared to occur by precipitation.

Produkten kan vara CaS03 eller metall-SO3-föreningar.The product may be CaSO 3 or metal SO 3 compounds.

However, the sulfur conversion profiles show that such sulphite compounds are available for sulfur dissolution, but the availability is strongly affected by the temperature.

This is quite clear from the tests at 65 ° C where the degree of conversion at the lower dosage approaches that at the higher dosage with time. 534 315 Example 3 - Cyanide leaching test Cyanide leaching test was performed on a bio-residue product obtained from continuous 1-step biooxidation at about 37 ° C on low-grade refractory concentrate from Petiknäs at 60 hours residence time and about 15% solids.

Svavelavskiljningsprofilen fastställdes inte. The sulfur separation profile was not determined.

The bio-residue product was filtered, washed thoroughly and re-pulped with water. The re-pulped bio-residue product was then divided by a rotary divider into subsamples, each containing about 220-230 g of solid material based on dry matter, which were used in the downstream test. The main analysis of the bio-residue product is given in Table 1. The analysis of elemental sulfur was made by weight determination after extraction to carbon disul fi d.

Three tests, Test A-C, were performed as briefly described in Table 2 and the calculated main levels of Au, Ag and S ° are summarized in the same table. The main and residual product analyzes were performed by extraction into a solvent with 20 mM NaCN / acetone followed by spectrometric determination via formation of ferritiocyanate complexes. The calculated main sample levels of elemental sulfur are based on residual elemental sulfur after cyanidation and the thiocyanate formed.

Detta framgår av Figur 11, vilken visar guldet i lakrester som funktion av laktiden för Test A-C.It was found that in Tests A and C, i.e. when a major portion of the elemental sulfur had been separated from the bio-residue product, the initial leaching rate was significantly faster than the initial leaching rate in Test B, where the bio-residue product was directly subjected to cyanidation without prior separation of the cyanide-reactive sulfur content. In fact, it was found that the maximum gold recoveries are reached already after about 5-10 hours for Tests A and C, while in Test B more than 24 hours were needed. AC.

A Standard cyanidation of bio-residue product 3.86 42 0.076 after S-separation by sulphite leaching at about 65 ° C and 2.5 X stoichiometric demand. Main sample content of sulfur: 0.96% C Standard cyanidation of bio-residue product 4.27 41 0.14 after S-separation by batch biooxidation for 24 hours at about pH 3.5 and 48 ° C. Main sample content of sulfur: 0.15% l Figure 12a shows the NaCN consumption profile obtained. It is clear from the figure that sodium cyanide consumption is significantly lower for Test A and C compared to Test B. In addition, it should be noted that the actual cyanide consumption will depend on the leaching time, as free cyanide must be maintained to control the leaching rate of gold and silver. To obtain the maximum gold recovery in Test B, 24 hours of batch leaching were required, as mentioned above, and the cyanide consumption over 24 hours was about 12 kg of NaCN per ton of bio-residue product as shown in Figure 12a. However, in order to achieve the maximum gold recoveries in Test A and C, only about 1-2 kg NaCN per tonne was consumed because the required leaching was only about 5-10 hours.

Figure 12b shows the thiocyanate profile for the three tests. It is clear that the formation of thiocyanate was extensive in Test B. The calculated main sample contents indicate that SCN 'is mainly formed by the elemental sulfur content.

Additional tests were performed on the above-mentioned meso-b bio-residue product for three different processes, Test DF, according to the invention, and were compared with a sample, Test G, in which elemental sulfur had not been selectively separated, in order to determine whether there is a match between the content of elemental sulfur in the bio-residue product and the thiocyanate formation during cyanide leaching. Tests D-F are summarized below in Table 3 as well as the content of elemental sulfur in the calculated main fraction, the analyzed main fraction and the final residue.

The calculated main levels are based on the sulfur found as thiocyanate and the sulfur in the final cyanidation residues.

Test Test description Calculated main fraction S., [fabric] Analyzed main fraction S., [o / o] Final residue S ° [%] Standard cyanidation of bio-residue product after S ° - separation by biooxidation at about pH 3.5 for 24 h 0.16 0.17 0.06 Standard cyanidation of bio-residue product after S ° - separation by biooxidation at about pH 4.5 for 54 h 0.25 0.26 0.13 Standard cyanidation of bio-residue product after S ° - separation by biooxidation at about pH 4.5 for 24 hours followed by sulphite leaching for 26 hours 0.19 0.21 0.10 Standard cyanidation of bio-residue product not subjected to S ° separation 1.06 0.96 0.42 534 315 23 As previously mentioned, There has been a debate over the years about the role of the enzyme rhodanes and how it affects cyanide consumption. One theory has been that the rhodane activity from the biomass significantly contributes to the loss of cyanide in the gold extraction plant by enhancing thiocyanate formation by cleaving S-S bonds. Another theory, however, has been that it is unlikely that rhodane activity is responsible for the very large cyanide spill at the high pH values associated with the cyanidation process. The very good relationship between thiocyanate formation and elemental sulfur precipitation found in the tests described above, and shown in Table 3, supports the theory that thiocyanate formation is only a result of chemical reaction between S 'and cyanide ions.

Huvudanalysresultaten visas i Tabell 4.Example 4 - Selective separation of sulfur by salt leaching of copper concentrate A batch bio-leaching test was performed on a crude copper-lead concentrate from Maurliden. Cu Zn Pb S As Sb Fe l%] l%] [° / «>] [° / °] l%] l%] l%] 11.2 2.81 15.8 37.2 0.7 2, 84 28.9 The test was performed with a bacterial culture, which had grown on a pyrite concentrate from Aitik at about 37 ° C and pH about 1.5, in batch operation. The Cu-Pb concentrate was added stepwise, to about 3 L of an active leach solution from the pyrite concentrate. The initial iron concentration was about 5 g / l and predominant of trivalent iron. The final pulp density was about 10% solids by weight. The pH was stabilized at about 1.5, without the need for pH control. The resulting leaching profile is shown in Figure 13. The copper extraction profile shown in Figure 13 is based on total added copper and solution analysis results.

The leaching rate was initially low. At day 12, the batch leaching was stopped and the solution was separated from the goods. The solution was returned to the 534 '3-'15 bioreactor to be oxygenated in order to maintain the activity. The redox potential gradually increased to> 600 mV, indicating that the culture was still active.

The washed solid was subjected to salt leaching at 65 ° C for 24 hours. Sodium sulfite was added in excess, to dissolve S ° as thiosulfate. The initial pH was about 9.5 using NaOH addition. By leaching salt, the cyanide-reactive sulfur content was reduced from about 1.36% to about 0.10%.

After sulphite leaching, the residual product was returned to the bioreactor, where it was re-pulped with the recycled bio-lacquer water. As shown in Figure 13, the redox potential dropped drastically and was never restored. The observed copper extraction rate was very low. The cause of the inactivity was probably due to the culture being poisoned by the dissolution of sulfites, which were present in the residual product, after leaching. After 5 days, 100 ml of fresh bio-lacquer water was added from a pyrite bio-leaching reactor and the copper extraction rate suddenly increased drastically after one day. The leaching was terminated after another day to allow analysis of the final residue. The copper analysis of the final solution indicated approximately 47% recovery to solution based on the main sample content. The content analysis of the final residual product is given in Table 5. In Table 6, the calculated recoveries of metals are given to solution, based on the assumption of negligible dissolution of lead.

The concentration of cyanide-reactive sulfur in the final bio-residue product was about 0.7%, which was about half of the concentration found for the bio-residue product from the first bio-leaching step.

The leaching profile obtained is shown in Figure 14. The copper recovery profile shown is based on the actual concentrate added to the reactor.

Analyzes of the solution show a very high extraction rate for the first additions of concentrate. At 48% of the total addition, about 85% of the copper recovery to solution was achieved within 5 days. When residual concentrations of concentrate were added, the extraction rate decreased markedly.

After 7 days, the bioleaching was stopped and the solution was separated from the solid and leached through sulfite at about 65 ° C. The biolac solution was returned to the bioreactor and the redox potential was restored to> 700 mV.

Efter totalt 25 dagars biolakning var kopparutvinningen cirka 90 %.As in the first test, the sulfur content of the residue was about 1.4% when the biooxidation was stopped. The sulfite leaching also reduced the S ° content in this test to about 0.1%. After re-pulping the residual product in the recovered biolac water, the copper solution increased rapidly, as in the first test. After a total of 25 days of bio-leaching, copper extraction was about 90%.

Det är intressant att notera att S°- halten i biorestprodukten verkar stanna vid cirka 0,6-0,7 %.Samples of the bio-residue product for S ° analysis were taken regularly during the bio-leaching process, after sulfur separation. It is interesting to note that the S ° content of the bio - residual product appears to remain at around 0.6-0.7%.
