A microphone has apertures 10 and 11, coupling a resonator chamber formed behind the diaphragm with further chambers 12 and 13, in which the coupling apertures are covered with an attenuating material formed by the capillary zone of an ionotropic capillary membrane. A further coupling aperture 16 may be provided in the diaphragm itself, in which case the diaphragm is preferably formed of a primary carrier on which the capillary zone is formed, e.g. by subjecting polyelectrolytes to ion exchange, as described in Specification 918,626, the primary carrier being removed in the area of the aperture 16.
