Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of non-destructive testing methods and can be used for ultrasonic inspection of materials and products, in particular in its immersion version.
A number of technical solutions are known for ultrasonic transducers (USP), common to which is the placement of a piezo plate in the transducer case with a damper installed on it.
Known USP [1], in which the damper is made of the same material as the piezoelectric plate, in the form of a cone, the base of which is covered with a layer of silver. Acoustic contact between the piezoelectric plate and the damper is ensured by soldering them with the Wood alloy. The disadvantage of the described solution is the presence of an intermediate layer (adhesion) between the plate and the damper, as well as the low attenuation coefficient in the damper material.
Known USP [2], in which the damper is made in the form of a pressed powder alloy Wood or Rose, sequentially passing from the state of the sintered powder to the state of the solidified melt, directly in contact with the piezoelectric plate. The disadvantage of this solution is the difficulty of maintaining in the manufacture of the temperature regime, ensuring the identity of the electro-acoustic parameters U3P.
Known SPD, in which a combined damper is used, consisting of a trap and a sound absorber. The disadvantage of this solution is the rather complex geometric shape of the damper, which complicates the manufacturing technology of ultrasonic protection.
The closest in technical essence is USP [4], which consists of a body and a piezoelectric plate fixed to one of its ends with a damper adjacent to it. It uses an epoxy compound with a filler in the form of a powder of a heavy metal or its oxide as a damper. This SPD, having a relatively low quality factor, provides the possibility of forming a sufficiently short acoustic pulse, but has a relatively short service life, especially when it is used in conditions of large temperature drops or constant contact with water. This drawback is due to the need to use a relatively large thickness (height) of the damper due to its low absorption capacity (for example, for a frequency of 2 MHz, the height of the damper is 1.5 ... 2 cm depending on the filler concentration), as well as the insufficient repeatability of the acoustic parameters converters due to the relatively low viability in the manufacturing process of the epoxy compound (about 30 minutes), which affects their small-scale production. In addition, the non-uniformity of polymerization of a thick layer of epoxy compound in a relatively large volume causes residual mechanical stresses in the depth of the damper, which can contribute to delamination of the damper from the piezoelectric plate and from the housing. constant contact with immersion medium (water).
The problem solved by the invention is the creation of SPD with a relatively low quality factor (not worse than in the known one), providing a short acoustic pulse duration and stable electro-acoustic characteristics in small-scale production of SPD, as well as lower consumption of damper material.
The problem is solved as follows. The proposed USP, as well as the known one, contains a housing with a piezoelectric plate fixed on one of its ends with a damper adjacent to it. In this case, unlike the known damper, it is made of two acoustically connected parts (layers): a relatively hard layer directly in contact with the piezoelectric plate made of an epoxy-like material with a filler of a powder of heavy metal or its oxide, and a relatively soft layer made of rubber-like material with a filler of a heavy metal or its oxide, which has a large extent. Moreover, the density of this rubber-like (with filler) part of the damper increases as it approaches its relatively rigid epoxy-like (with filler) part, providing at the interface the condition of matching (equality) of the specific impedances of the rubber-like and epoxy-like parts of the damper.
The problem is also solved due to the fact that the thickness of the part of the damper made of an epoxy-like material with a filler of a powder of a heavy metal or its oxide is selected in the range (0.5 ... 1) λ, where λ is the wavelength in the material of the specified part damper.
This design of SPD allows to reduce the length (height) of the damper and save the materials required for its manufacture without compromising the electro-acoustic characteristics of the proposed SPD. This is due to the fact that the rubber-like part of the damper, which has a large attenuation coefficient, can be made 2 ... 3 times lower in height than its epoxy-like analogue, and the relatively thin "hard" epoxy-like part of the damper determines the acoustic quality factor of the ultrasonic testing.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing, schematically showing the proposed USP.
The proposed USP contains a housing 1 mounted on one of its ends piezoelectric plate 2, which has a damper coaxially mounted and adjacent to it, consisting of an epoxy-like layer 3 adjacent to the piezoelectric plate 2 with a filler of a powder of heavy metal or its oxide and rubber-like layer 4 s filler from a powder of a heavy metal or its oxide. Thus, the first layer is more rigid with respect to the second layer. The thickness of the epoxy-like layer 3 of the damper filled with a powder of heavy metal or its oxide is selected in the range (0.5-1) λ, where λ is the wavelength in the material of the indicated part of the damper at the half-wave resonance frequency of the piezoelectric plate.
The proposed USP works as follows. Under the influence of an exciting electric pulse, piezoelectric plate 2 performs longitudinal oscillations in the frequency region of the thick half-wave resonance, emitting acoustic waves in two directions: in the direct direction - towards the test sample (in particular, through the immersion medium), and in the rear direction - into the damper. In the latter, due to the strong attenuation in the damper material, the acoustic waves are completely scattered and absorbed.
The two-layer structure of the damper in the proposed SPD allows reducing its height by 2 ... 3 times and thereby the amount of consumable materials, which is especially noticeable in small-scale production of SPD. The damper layer in direct contact with the piezoelectric plate should be made relatively rigid with a specific impedance as close as possible to the specific impedance of the piezoelectric plate (for example, using tungsten or its oxide powder as an filler of the epoxy compound). It is sufficient to choose the thickness h of this damper layer in the range h ≈ (0.5 ... 1) λ, where λ is the wavelength in the material of the composite (epoxy compound with a filler) layer at the frequency of the half-wave resonance of the piezoelectric plate. According to the results of calculations and numerous experimental data, such a thickness of this part of the damper is sufficient to form an oscillatory system of ultrasonic testing with a given degree of damping of the piezoelectric plate, which determines the quality factor of the entire ultrasonic testing. An increase in the thickness of the lower layer (h> λ) practically does not change the Q factor of the SPD and its transmission band and serves only for the complete absorption of the acoustic wave emitted in the back direction, which ultimately leads to a noticeable increase in the total thickness (height) of the damper and a higher consumption required for its manufacture of materials. The choice of a layer thickness of less than 0.5λ leads to insufficient damping of the SPD, bringing its Q factor closer to the embodiment of the damper entirely from rubber-like material. It was experimentally established that the quality factors of ultrasonic testing with dampers made entirely of rubber-like Q p or epoxy-like Q e materials with the same degree of filler concentration in them are correlated as Q p ≈ 2Q e . Since a composite material in the form of a rubber-like base with a filler has a greater damping coefficient (stronger damping of vibrations on the relatively flexible bonds between the filler particles) than an epoxy compound with a filler [4,5] or a metal melt [2], from the standpoint of material saving it the use of a damper for this part (layer) is more appropriate. It is only important that the approximate equality of their acoustic impedances is ensured at the interface of the parts (layers) of the damper. This condition is ensured by the fact that the epoxy-like (with filler) damper layer is made relatively thin (h <λ) so that the filler does not precipitate and remains evenly distributed throughout the entire volume of the layer, and the rubber-like (with filler) damper layer is formed using a centrifuge that ensures consistent an increase in the specific impedance of the rubber-like layer to the layer interface.
The quality control of the damper and the SPD itself is carried out according to the type (structure) of the acoustic pulse or its envelope. The latter should not have bursts (maximums) on its slopes. The width of the envelope or the duration of the acoustic pulse at predetermined levels is determined by the operating frequency of the SPD, the degree of its damping, and the quality of execution of the damper itself.
Since the epoxy-like (with filler) part of the damper of the proposed USP is relatively thin, the polymerization of the epoxy compound is not accompanied by the appearance of inhomogeneous compressive mechanical stresses. As a rule, the life time (suitability for use) of rubber-like compounds is longer than that of epoxy-like ones.
In addition, due to their lower viscosity, the centrifugation process is better and with greater repeatability. In this regard, the final operational and acoustic characteristics of the proposed ultrasonic testing are significantly better than those adopted for the prototype.
4:1. So, for example, in the small-scale production of ultrasonic testing in the amount of 2000 pieces using piezoelectric quartz plates with an operating frequency of 2.5 MHz, the acoustic pulse duration at the levels of -20 dB and -40 dB from its maximum value was (1.2 ± 0.1) μs and (2.1 ± 0.2) μs. In this case, the scatter of the maximum amplitudes did not exceed ± 1 dB. For the lower layer of the damper, the UP-592 epoxy compound was used, and for the upper layer, the PU-ZK polyurethane compound [6]. The filler for both layers was tungsten powder, taken in relation to the base as 4: 1.
