Abstract
Description
The invention relates to metallurgy, in particular to the production of silicon of high purity.
Metallurgical silicon containing more than 98.8% Si is used to produce organosilicon compounds and trichlorosilane feedstocks to produce semiconductor silicon.
The production of metallurgical silicon of such a composition by reduction in electric arc furnaces is difficult due to the shortage of pure quartz and carbon reducing agents. The implementation of their preliminary chemical purification requires significant capital costs, therefore, it is economically feasible to melt metallurgical silicon from conventional raw materials using conventional technology, and then carry out its refining. Purification of liquid metallurgical silicon from metal impurities by purging with gaseous halogen-containing reagents gives positive results, but is accompanied by harmful emissions into the atmosphere and worsens the environmental situation.
A more acceptable method is the acid purification of powdered metallurgical silicon, based on a large difference in the solubility of impurities in liquid and solid states. In cooled silicon, impurities are located at the grain boundaries and are opened during crushing, which makes it possible to remove up to 90% of metallic impurities in aqueous solutions of inorganic acids and their mixtures at low temperatures. Therefore, the purification of silicon by acid refining is the most economically feasible.
Closest to the invention in technical essence is a method for producing high-purity silicon powder, including smelting of metallurgical silicon with a high barium content due to silicothermic reduction from barium compounds (BaCO 3 , Ba (OH) 2 or BaO) added to the mixture or ladle with liquid silicon in an amount of 5-30 wt. by weight of the metal at a temperature of 1823-2273 K. The resulting metal is poured into ingots, crushed to a piece size of 5-10 cm and treated with an aqueous solution of mineral acids containing 10% HCl and 10% HF, taken in an amount of 1.5-5 times exceeding the mass of metal. After acid treatment for a long time (20-50 h) at a temperature of up to 353 K, the product is cleaned of impurities by washing, then filtered. In its composition, the obtained silicon powder meets the requirements for silicon for the manufacture of solar cells.
The disadvantage of this method is that it requires a significant consumption of inorganic acids. In accordance with this, the costs associated with the neutralization of spent acid solutions containing highly toxic barium compounds and their disposal increase. In addition, the use of acidic solutions containing a significant concentration of highly toxic and corrosive hydrofluoric acid creates an environmentally hazardous environment, degrades the operation of equipment and complicates the process of neutralizing spent solutions.
The objective of the invention is the development of a method for producing silicon powder of high purity, which provides efficient extraction of metal impurities with environmentally less hazardous solutions of inorganic acids containing a low concentration of hydrofluoric acid.
To do this, metallurgical silicon, smelted by carbothermic reduction in electric arc furnaces by conventional technology, is crushed and subjected to two-stage acid treatment. In the first stage, the metal is treated with an aqueous solution of 4-20 wt. HCl at temperatures up to 353 K, taken in an amount exceeding the mass of the metal in 0.9-1.5 times.
In this case, the main mass of calcium and aluminum impurities is extracted into the solution by reactions
Al + 3HCl AlCl 3 + H 2 (1)
Ca + 2HCl CaCl 2 + H 2 (2) and a small part of iron by reaction
Fe + 2HCl FeCl 2 + H 2 (3) As a result, after the first processing step, a semi-product is obtained containing high-purity silicon grains and a finely divided silicon fraction enriched with iron silicide FeSi 2 . After washing with water, the intermediate in the second stage is treated with an aqueous solution containing a mixture of HCl and HF at a weight ratio of HCl: HF equal to (24-10): 1, taken in an amount 1.5-5 times the mass of the metal. The boundary values of the HCl: HF ratio were found experimentally. The extraction of impurities from silicon occurs according to reactions (1-3), and the destruction of iron silicide FeSi 2 by reaction
FeSi 2 + 3HF FeF 2 + 2Si + 1,5H 2 (4)
Studies have shown that when processing metallurgical silicon with an aqueous solution of 4-20 wt. HCl for 5 h at 333 K the extraction of metal impurities in the solution was 50% for aluminum, 75% for calcium and 32% for iron of their total content in the starting metal. The low degree of purification of silicon from iron in the HCl solution is due to the fact that the formed iron chloride (FeCl 3 ) in the solution dissociates with the formation of Fe 3+ ions, which counteract the oxidation of Fe 2+ ions with atmospheric oxygen. It was found that to remove iron from silicon there is no need to use a solution with a high concentration of HF. When small amounts of hydrofluoric acid are added to the HCl solution, iron fluoride (FeF 3 ) that does not dissociate in the solution is formed, which leads to a decrease in the concentration of Fe 3+ ions in the solution and accelerates the oxidation of Fe 2+ ions with air oxygen and, accordingly, iron impurities. Thus, metallurgical silicon containing 2.12% Fe, 1.13% Al and 0.43% Ca was treated with a 5% HCl solution and powder with a particle size less than 0.2 mm was separated from large silicon grains.
In the second stage, a powder of a fraction of less than 0.2 mm in an amount of 8 g was treated with an aqueous solution (0.37% HF + 4.63% HCl) in an

The use of acidic solutions with a higher concentration of HF does not significantly improve the quality of silicon powders, but significantly worsens the environmental situation in the environment, equipment operation and increases the costs associated with the neutralization of solutions.
