Um tal conjunto de nariz e bloco de corte e uma tal ferramenta são conhecidos através da patente US 4,597,517.FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to improvements in fastening tool dragging, and more specifically to a nose and cutting block assembly according to the preamble of claim 1, and to a power tool comprising such a set of nose and cutting block and such a tool are known from patent US 4,597,517.

ANTECEDENTES DA INVENÇÃOBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Ferramentas accionadas por combustão são descritas nas patentes US n°s Re. 32,452; 4,403,722; 4,483,473; 4,483,474; 4, 552, 162; 5,197,646 e 5,263,469.Motorized construction tools for use in entrainment of fasteners in workpieces are well known. Construction tools are generally portable and are pneumatically or combustion driven. Similar pneumatic tools are described in U.S. Patents 4,932,480; 3, 552, 234 and 3,815,475. Combustion-driven tools are disclosed in U.S. Pat. 32,452; 4,403,722; 4,483,473; 4,483,474; 4, 552, 162; 5,197,646 and 5,263,469.

Tais ferramentas accionadas por combustão particularmente concebidas para aplicações de corte são divulgadas na patente US n.° 6,016,622.Such combustion-driven tools particularly designed for cutting applications are disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 6,016,622.

Such tools generally incorporate a pistol-shaped tool housing enclosing the power source, such as a pneumatic cylinder or a small internal combustion engine. The engine is driven by a pressurized fuel gas cylinder also referred to as a fuel cell. Energy is generated by the expansion of compressed gases, either by burning the fuel in a combustion chamber or by expanding air in the pneumatic cylinder. The power source moves a reciprocating piston which has a rigid and elongated trailing blade disposed within a piston chamber of a cylinder body. A safety lock prevents tool engagement unless a part contact member at the end of a nose, or nose assembly, is pressed against a workpiece.

3When the trigger is depressed, expansion of the gas or air causes the piston and the wiper blade to be fired down to strike a positioned securing member and drag it onto the workpiece. As the piston is drawn down, a displacement volume enclosed in the piston chamber below the piston is forced out through one or more points of the outlet provided at a lower end of the cylinder. Upon impact, the piston then returns to its original position or " ready " through the differential gas pressures inside the cylinder. The fasteners are fed to the nose drum from a supply assembly, such as a housing, where they are held in a correctly positioned orientation to receive the impact of the wiper blade. The fasteners are then propelled through the length of the drum by the wiper blade, leaving the drum on the surface of the workpiece. The force of the wiper blade and the thrust of the securing member causes the securing member to penetrate the workpiece. 3

Construction tools are commonly used in residential construction primarily to nail nails into wood. Metal hardware such as beam hooks, connecting plates and seismic belt placement are often attached to the wooden frame, which requires a relatively accurate placement of the fastening element in the apertures or grooves in the metal hardware. A POSITIVE PLACEMENT® tool is a specific building tool that is used in places where precision placement is desired. This tool has a probe that assists the alignment of the fastening elements with the hardware openings.

4Typically at least two different lengths of fasteners are used for these applications. Current designs for these tools require the user to change tool settings when changing between different nail lengths. The user first has to pull a spring tension plunger to disengage it from a cam lever. The cam lever rotates approximately 60 degrees around a pin. While holding the plunger in the outer position, the lever must be turned by the handle to the other position. When the plunger is released, engage the lever again to lock it in the new position. Such an operation requires two hands, one to hold the tool and the other to pull the plunger, turn it and allow it to re-engage. In construction environments, the user is often in an awkward position, attempting to align two or more pieces of work that are to be secured together. It is not always practical to release both hands to make the adjustment change. 4

More specifically, it is an object of the present invention to provide a nose and a cutting block assembly which propels a fastening member supplied from a plurality of fasteners. The assembly includes a nose which is configured to be attached to the tool and defines a portion of a drum and a cutting block configured to be attached to the nose to complete the drum. There is an opening in the drum for receiving a fastening element.

Some tools of this type have a quick release feature by which the nose easily separates from the cutting block by actuating a locking pawl. The forces acting on the drive tend to push against the drum walls, trying to separate the nose and the cutting block.

In cases where the nose and the cutting block are separable, the stress is placed on the locking mechanism.

An object of the present invention is to provide an improved tool for dragging fasteners with a nose assembly and cutting block in which the possibility of locking failure is minimized.

DESCRIÇÃO PORMENORIZADA DA INVENÇÃODETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

With reference to Figures 1 to 3, a power tool, generally designated 10, is shown with a nose assembly and cutting block 12 having a wiper blade. The tool 10 is generally used to insert a fastening element 14 into a workpiece 16, such as in a nailing or arming operation. The fastening element 14 is generally loaded into a housing 18 which is removably attached to the tool 10. The fastening element 14 is contemplated to be any type of fastening element that is satisfactorily drawn to the workpiece 16, such as nails , tacks, staples, small nails, and the like. In order to secure a plurality of fastening elements 14 in the same orientation and to handle many fastening elements at one time, fasteners are generally attached to a tape 20, which is typically made of paper or plastic. The overall appearance and operating details of such power tools 10 are well known in the art. The directional references herein should be interpreted as if the tool 10 were oriented with a nose 22 approximately perpendicular to and in contact with the workpiece 16, as shown in Figure 1.

Na abertura 30, o dispositivo arrastador 26 entra em contacto com o elemento de fixação 14 e impele-o através do restante comprimento do tambor 24 e para o interior da peça de trabalho 16.Referring to Figures 2 and 3, the assembly 12 includes the nose 22 which is configured to be connected to the tool 10. A tubular drum 24 is formed at least partially by the nose 22, and guides the fastening elements 14 as they are introduced in the workpiece 16 by a trailing blade 26. The drum 24 extends from the rest position of the trailing blade 26 proximate a body 287 of the tool 10 to an outlet 29 on the surface of the workpiece 16 when the tool 10 is ready to drag the fastening element 14. A rearwardly facing opening 30 in the drum 24 receives the fastening element 14 of the housing 18 oriented so that a penetrating portion 32 of the fastening element 14 is closer to the workpiece 16 and the length of the securing member is generally parallel to the drum. When the tool 10 is in contact with the part 16 and a trigger 34 (Figure 1) is activated by the user, the wiper blade 26 travels rapidly through the drum 24. At the aperture 30, the wiper device 26 comes into contact with the wiper member fixation 14 and impels it through the remaining length of the drum 24 and into the workpiece 16.

Optionally, the nose 22 has one or more windows 36 extending to the barrel 24 best seen in Figure 4. The windows 36 are constructed and arranged to align with the path of the tape 20. Any form of window 36 is suitable, although a groove shape is preferred. If the tape 20 does not break with the preceding securing member 14, it is aligned to project through the window 36, allowing the next nail 14 to completely enter the drum 24. It is likely that the tape 20 will be dissipated by subsequent tool shots 10. Occasionally, the tape 20 will be folded, curved or otherwise misaligned so that it does not align with the windows 36, and begins to accumulate in the drum 24. In this case, the windows 36 allow the user to observe the accumulate of paper 20 and remove the tape 20 before an obstruction occurs. Access is provided to the drum 24 to facilitate release of the tape 20 from the obstructions. Any configuration 8 known in the art to provide access to the drum 24 is useful in this invention. A preferred set 12 has the drum 24 formed partially by the nose 22 and partly by an adjacent cutting block 40 which is configured to be attached to the nose to complete the drum. One advantage of forming the drum 24 so that the nose 22 and the cutting block 40 are adjacent and separable from each other, as seen in Figure 7, is that the assembly 12 is conveniently released from obstructions.

Preferably, the device 42 is in the form of a cam lever which is pivotally attached to the cutting block 40 and is positioned so that the cam lever rotates in response to the length of the securing member 14. The securing members 14 move from the housing 18 to the aperture 30 in the barrel 24, oriented approximately vertically. The length of the aperture 30 is at least equal to that of the longer securing member 14 to be used in the tool 10. When the long securing elements 14 move down into the housing 18 towards the aperture 30, a penetrating end 32 of the securing member 14 comes into contact with the cam lever 42. The cam lever 42 is under tension, such as through a spring 45 (shown concealed) which propels it upwardly, as shown in Figure 2, to press against the fastening elements 14. The fastening elements 14 exert a downward pressure against the cam lever 42 by pushing it out of the path of the fastening elements 14. 9

10A surface of the cam lever 42 is referred to as a locking surface 46 as it is intended to conceal unused portions of the aperture 30. The locking surface 46 is adjacent the barrel 24 of the tool 10. When the cam lever 42 rotates up and down relative to the length of the securing elements 14, the locking surface 46 changes the effective length of the aperture 30 when the cam lever 42 rotates. The shape of the locking surface 46 is not critical, however, with an arc shape being preferred. Following entrainment of a securing member 14, when the wiper blade 26 retracts to the length of the drum 24 and moves up past the aperture 30, the next securing member 14 is introduced into the drum 24 by the spring loaded clip or by the housing 18. When the tool 10 is driven, the wiper blade 26 comes into contact with the securing member 14 and begins to push it down the drum 24, has a tendency to bounce back or protrude out of the wall 48 and begins to exit the drum through aperture 30. When long studs 14 are loaded, the percussion nail often reaches the next nail in the housing 18 and is pushed back into the drum 24. However, when short nails are used 14 , they can rotate through the aperture 30, partially emerging from the drum 24 below the end of the next securing member 14. The locking of the aperture 30 by the locking surface 46 between ap the lower art of the fastening element 14 and the lower part of the aperture maintains the fastening element inside the drum 24 even if it protrudes. 10

When it is desired to change to smaller nails 24, the improved nose and cutting block assembly 12 allows the tool 10 to automatically adjust to the different length of the fastener. When smaller securing members 14 pass through the housing 18, they do not cause the cam lever 42 to rotate as far as the long nails. Compared to the long nails 14, the tension force of the spring 45 is not exceeded, and the cam lever 42 is not as compressed as by short nails, so that a larger portion of the locking surface 46 adjacent the drum 24 closes the unused portion of the aperture 30. When the short nail 14 protrudes out of the wall 48, it encounters the locking surface 46 instead of entering the cutting block 40, and is drawn back into the drum 24. Reducing the effect of is particularly advantageous in a POSITIVE PLACEMENT® tool 10 as the fastening element 14 is pushed along a more straight path through the drum 24, improving the accuracy of its placement.

Independentemente do comprimento do elemento de fixação 14, a alavanca de 11 ressalto 42 roda para entrar em contacto com a ponta penetrante 32.When the clip or housing 18 is changed or refilled with an additional source of fasteners 14, the cam lever 42 automatically adjusts to the length of the retracted fasteners. The securing elements 14 urge the cam lever 42 sufficiently out of the way to allow it to pass through the clear part while the biasing force provided by the spring 45 pushes the cam lever 42 upwardly into contact with the penetrating tip 32 of the securing member 14, closing the unused portion of the aperture 30. Regardless of the length of the securing member 14, the cam lever 42 rotates to come into contact with the penetrating tip 32.

Referring to Figure 7, some tools 10 of this type have a quick separation feature through which the nose 22 easily separates from the cutting block 40 by the engagement of a locking pawl (not shown). This feature is used to rapidly open the drum 24 of the tool 10 to clear an obstruction and close the drum again without having multiple parts to disassemble. Such features are well known in the art. The forces at play during the drive tend to push against the walls of the drum 24, attempting to separate the nose 22 and the cutting block 40. In cases where the nose 22 and the cutting block 40 are separable, the tension is placed in the locking mechanism or other apparatus which normally holds the nose 22 and cutter block 40 together. If the locking becomes worn after prolonged use, it could possibly disengage during the drive, allowing the nose 22 and the cutting block 40 to separate. The possibility of failure of locking is minimized by incorporating at least one protrusion 52 in the cutting block 40 that engages so as to engage a raised cap 54 in a movable member 56, such as a workpiece contact member. When in its lower or resting position, as shown in Figure 5, the workpiece contacting member 56 is locked with the drive mechanism (not shown) to ensure that the tool 10 is not actuated except if it comes into contact with the workpiece 16. In this position, the nose and the cutting block are separable, allowing the user 12 to release an obstruction if necessary. When the workpiece contacting member 56 is urged upwardly, in a movement parallel to the length of the drum 24 to a drive position shown in Figure 6, the workpiece contacting member 56 engages the cutting block 40 such as described in more detail below. This position allows tool 10 to actuate but prevents separation of nose 22 and cutter block 40. Workpiece contacting member 56 is preferably tensioned by a spring to automatically return to its rest position when tool 10 is raised from the surface of the workpiece 16. After the tool 10 is actuated, the drive mechanism is locked until it is activated again by the engagement of the workpiece contact member 56. The raised cover 54 is designed to to move easily over the protrusion 52 in a direction which is parallel to that of the drum 24, but to prevent movement which would allow separation of the nose 22 from the cutting block 40. As shown in Figure 8, the protrusion 52 has a cross- generally semicircular, but other cross-sectional shapes, such as triangles, rectangles are also appropriate. As the workpiece contacting member 56 moves upwardly in response to the positioning of the tool 10 on the workpiece 16, the cap 54 slides over the flange 52, as seen in Figure 6. Figure 7 shows the disengagement of the tool 10 of the workpiece 16 which also detaches the cap 54 from the protrusion 52, allowing rapid separation of the nose assembly and the cutting block 12. Thus, the nose 22 and the cutting block 40 can not be accidentally separated during the actuation of the tool 10 and an obstruction can be released only when the tool 10 is prevented from being driven.

Still with reference to Figures 5, 6 and 7, the cutting block 40 optionally has one or more protrusions 52 also designated first protrusions, and the nose 22 has one or more second protrusions 60. While contemplating the use of multiple covers 54, an economical embodiment uses a single cap to engage multiple protrusions 52, 60 which are disposed linearly and coaxially. Preferably, the protrusions 52, 60 are disposed so that both are covered by and can engage the cap 54 of the workpiece contacting member 56 when engaged in the piece 16. It contemplates the use of additional devices for securing the cap 54 and the projections 52, 60, such as a flange in the cap engaging a groove in the flange, or a pin inside the cap engaging a hole through the flange. The most preferred arrangement includes two protrusions 60 on the nose 22 and at least one protrusion 52 on the cutting block 40, shown in Figures 1, 5, 7 and 8.
