Abstract

Disclosed is a heat pump system (10) for raising a temperature of a load (16), such as a domestic water tank, to at least a desired temperature. A first working fluid circuit (12) is arranged to receive heat energy from an external heat energy source and then directly transfer some of its heat energy to the load to raise the temperature of the load to at least an intermediate temperature, if the temperature of the load is less than the intermediate temperature. An indoor second working fluid circuit (14) is arranged to directly receive some of the heat energy from the first working fluid circuit and then directly transfer some of its heat energy to the load to further raise the temperature of the load from the intermediate temperature to at least the desired temperature, if the temperature of the load is less than the desired temperature. A load circuit (16) circulates the load liquid to be heated. The load circuit includes a pump (21) to control the flow rate of the load liquid in the load circuit to assist with controlling the temperature of the load liquid in the load circuit. The first working fluid circuit (12) and the indoor second working fluid circuit (14) include respective controllable expansion valves (29, 32). A controller controls the controllable expansion valves (29, 32) and the pump (21) to optimise the system. An apparatus for use in a heat pump in a heat pump system for raising a temperature of a load positioned indoors is also provided.
