Abstract

A method of operating a hot water system 70 comprises supplying mains water to an inlet 18 of an instantaneous-type water heater 12 or an inlet 22 of a water storage tank 14, directing the water from an outlet 24 of the tank 14 to a user controlled outlet, and monitoring the temperature of the water in the tank 14. When the temperature of the water in the tank 14 is substantially equal to or below a predetermined value the mains water is directed to the inlet 18 of the instantaneous-type water heater 12. When the temperature of the water in the tank 14 is substantially equal to or above the predetermined value the mains water is directed to the inlet 22 of the water storage tank 14.
