Abstract

In order to reduce or eliminate ice formation on external surfaces of a heat pump evaporator 4 refrigerant from the high pressure side is passed (via line 17) to heat exchanger 6a. Controller 8 is used to determine (indirectly) whether ice formation will occur by sensing suction pressure at 11 so as to control refrigerant flow through line 17.
