Description
Filterelement for tobakksrøk. Filter element for tobacco smoke.
The present invention relates to tobacco smoke filters and more particularly to a filter element for tobacco smoke which introduces a smoke treating or smoke modifying liquid into the path of the smoke which is drawn through the filter element.
So far, several proposals have been put forward for the introduction of water or other liquids in a two-stage smoke filter. U.S. patent no. 2 808 057 covers e.g. a fibrous filter body containing absorbed water and enclosing 1 a waterproof cylindrical sheath sheet with open ends, and U.S. Patents No. 2,755,206, No. 2,863,461, No. 3,162,199 and British Patent No. 243,199 describe smoke filters containing collapsible or fragile capsules filled with water or other liquids. Filter elements containing free liquid present a problem of retention of the liquid during storage, and those containing capsules or other containers for a liquid often present, after release of the liquid, a problem of holding the released liquid in place without allowing the filter element to remain collapsed after the capsule rupture pressure is released.
A filter element for tobacco smoke has now been constructed, which does not contain free liquid until it is released by the smoker and which, after the liquid has been released, provides its form and function as a smoke filter.
According to the present invention, a filter element for tobacco smoke is thus provided and which consists of a tubular outer casing that surrounds a body of compressed absorbent material with at least one fragile capsule containing a tobacco smoke-treating liquid medium placed in said body, characterized in that the absorbent material
a) i sin normalt ekspanderende tilstand har en porestruktur som tillater en filterrøkstrøm a) in its normally expanding state has a pore structure that allows a filter smoke flow
gjennom materialet,through the material,
b) i sin sammenpressede tilstand har en relativt stabil form, og c) når det er fuktet av nevnte væskemedium har tilstrekkelig spenstighet til å ekspandere b) in its compressed state has a relatively stable shape, and c) when wetted by said liquid medium has sufficient resilience to expand
og fylle hulrommet som opprinnelig var okkupert av kapselen og således fylle det rørfor-mede ytre hylster i alt vesentlig fullstendig med det absorberende materiale i dets rørfilt-rerende ekspanderte tilstand, and filling the cavity originally occupied by the capsule and thus filling the tubular outer sheath substantially completely with the absorbent material in its tube-filtering expanded state,
idet kapselen som i og for seg kjent brytes for således å frigjøre sitt væskemediuminnhold i legemet av sammenpresset absorberende materiale når et trykk utøves på filterelementets ytre hylster. the capsule, as is known in and of itself, being broken to thus release its liquid medium content in the body of compressed absorbent material when a pressure is exerted on the filter element's outer casing.
These and other new features according to the invention will be more easily understood from the following description in connection with the attached drawings where: Fig. 1 is a section through an embodiment of the filter element according to the invention combined with a second conventional filter in a double-filter cigarette,
fig. 2 is a section of the same double-filter cigarette after the fragile capsule has ruptured and the compressed envelope of absorbent material has expanded into its smoke-filtering state, and
fig. 3 is a section of another embodiment of the filter element according to the invention.
As shown in the modification of fig. 1, the filter element according to the invention consists of an outer casing 5 which surrounds a body of absorbent material in the form of a cylindrical casing 6 of compressed absorbent material. Placed inside the casing 6, and preferably frictionally supported by it, is a fragile capsule 7 containing a liquid tobacco smoke-treating medium 8, such as e.g. water. In the modification shown in fig. 3, the body of compressed absorbent material in the form of strips 9 is arranged mainly axially and with a number of fragile liquid-containing microcapsules placed between them.
The outer sleeve 5 can be of a conventional stopper wrapping paper which is used for the production of filter stoppers for cigarettes. It does not need to have significant wet strength, because the liquid in the capsule is not released until the post-filter element is enclosed in the stronger nozzle pipe which is generally used to attach the filter element to a cigarette or cigar, or the like. It should, however, have sufficient mass to be resilient, so that it can allow the filter element to be compressed when the tube is squeezed so as to break the capsule into pieces and so that the paper will essentially return to the tube shape it had at the beginning, when the pressure is released.
The tubular body of absorbent material enclosed by the outer casing may consist of any compressed smoke filter material which expands when wet. Cellulose sponge is particularly suitable, but other compressed materials such as polyurethane foam, cotton, sponge, shrunk paper with good wet strength and resilience, cellulose acetate straw compressed with a binder, which is soluble in the liquid filler component of the capsule, and the like materials. The requirements placed on the material in the body are that it must be able to be compressed into a relatively stable form and that it has sufficient resilience, when wet from the liquid component in the capsule, to expand and fill the cavity that was originally preoccupied with the capsule.
The capsule is composed of a thin-walled fragile shell filled with a tobacco smoke treatment liquid. The shell is preferably formed from a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl chloride copolymers, polyesters, phenol-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde resins, petroleum waxes, glass, gelatin and the like. A single capsule or several small capsules or a plurality of microcapsules can be placed in the envelope of compressed filter material, all such forms being called "capsules".
Capsules of such a size that only one or a few capsules are contained in a single filter element can be easily produced using techniques and methods that are common in the pharmaceutical industry. Smaller capsules, known as "microcapsules" and having a representative diameter of 0.025 to 3 mm, are prepared using various microencapsulation methods described in U.S. Pat. patent no. 2 800 457, no. 2 800 458, no. 2 969 330, no. 2 969 331, no. 3 015 128 and no.

"Miniature Capsules" in an issue of "International Science and Technology" 1965, page 66, and in "Microencapsulation" which is a report published by "Management Reports", Boston, Massachu-setts.
The liquid in the capsule or microcapsules can be any aqueous or non-aqueous liquid suitable for treating tobacco smoke. That is the liquid may be one which is useful for removing or otherwise excreting unwanted constituents in the smoke's vapor phase or particulate phase, such as e.g. water either alone or with an added surfactant or other suitable component, or the liquid may be one useful to enhance or supplement the flavor of the smoke, such as e.g. a menthol solution or lemon oil, or it may be a solution of a tobacco extract or of a drug such as a decongestant, or the like. Regardless of the composition of the liquid medium in the capsule, it should have a sufficient amount when released from the capsule or microcapsules to cause expansion of the compressed absorbent material to a smoke filtering condition and to provide enough free liquid absorbed or contained within the expanding filter- the material to effect the desired treatment of the smoke. In general, a two-digit volume of 0.05 to 0.20 ml of the treatment liquid in the capsule or microcapsules per 10 mm length of the filter element has been found to be particularly effective, although as little as 0.01 to 0.3 ml of liquid can be used in the performance of the invention.
The filter element according to the invention can be the only filter for a cigarette, cigar or pipe, or it can be combined with other conventional filter elements to form double or triple filters. When it is thus combined with other filters, the filter according to the invention is preferably placed between the tobacco and a nozzle filter element such as cellulose acetate straw, shrunk paper or the like.
When manufacturing the filter element according to the invention, it is preferred to use a cellulose sponge as a casing material which in its normal expanded state has a pore structure so as to allow a flow of smoke through a cigarette provided with the filter according to the invention, at a rate of 5 to 30 cm<3>, and preferably approx. 15 cm<3>, per second with a suction of approx. 5 and 1.6 cm of water. This sponge is compressed into a flat strip with a thickness of approximately 2 mm and a width of 20 mm and is fed continuously from a roller into a manufacturing unit for filter tongs.
A fume treatment liquid is simultaneously fed into a conventional pad-package manufacturing unit which continuously converts a flat plastic film with a width of approx. 16 mm for a pipe. As the pipe is formed, the fume treating liquid 1 is introduced into its interior, and seals are formed perpendicular to the pipe line to encapsulate the liquid. The sealing intervals are preferably such that each individual pad of liquid has a diameter of approximately 5 mm and a length of approx. 7 mm, the sealing section between the pads being approx. 3 mm in length.
The sponge sheet and a chain of plastic pads containing smoke treatment liquid are then fed into a device for producing filter rods, which wraps these two rod components in paper, and sections with a length of 80 mm are cut in the usual way. The resulting rods of a length of 80 mm are then fed into a compounding machine to combine these with a conventional fibrous filter element composed essentially of cellulose acetate straw to form a composite rod of the usual length of 120 mm, which is fed directly to a cigarette machine for the production of cigarettes with a double filter and which contains the filter element according to the invention. This filter materially reduces the concentration of the smoke components in the vapor phase, compared to the smoke from the same cigarette without a filter element, and the water component in the filter element also significantly increases the water content in the particulate phase of the smoke.
