Abstract

The ship's hull has one or more passages running along the bottom and ending in front of the propeller, there being a spiral section near the rear end. This imparts a swirling movement to the current in the opposite direction to that in which the propeller rotates. This part of the wake together with another part originating from outside the passage form a flow pattern such that the ratio between max. and min. thrust exerted by each propeller blade individually during a revolution is = 2 when the ship is travelling at cruising speed.
