Abstract

1,148,639. Transmitting information over a radiation path. ELTRO G.m.b.H. & CO. GES. f³r STRAHLUNGSTECHNIK. July 28, 1967 [July 29, 1966], No.34882/67. Heading G1A. [Also in Divisions G2 and H4] An observer using the binoculars of Figs.4 and 5 may communicate with an observer equipped with similar binoculars, Figs.1 and 2 (not shown). The observer first aligns his binoculars with those of the other observer by viewing them by means of objectives 7, 8, infrared to visible image converter tubes 13, 14 and eye-pieces 15, 16. This binocular optical set-up has the usual positional adjustment means. The observer speaks into a microphone 22, mounted on an arm which is adjustable between two positions. When moved to its operative position, the microphone arm switches on power to an electro-optical transmitter 9 which receives signals from the microphone. The transmitter may be a luminescent diode or laser emitting infrared radiation, modulated by the speech signals, which is reflected by prism 25 through objective 8 to form a parallel beam. Received radiation from the other observer passes through objective 7 and is reflected by prism 28 on to a light-sensitive semi-conductor 10, the output of which is demodulated and amplified by devices 11 and 12 mounted in the casings 1 and 2. The incoming modulated radiation can also be viewed by the observer by means of the image converters. The received signals are fed to earphones 18, 19 also adjustable in position and actuating switches as does the microphone arm. Alternatives are as follows. The viewing device may be a telescope instead of binoculars. The radiation used for communication may be visible light. The electro-optical transducers 9, 10 may be mounted on the optical axes of the device instead of at the sides of the casings 1, 2.
