Abstract

Articles, e.g. sheets, hollow hemispheres, shoe uppers, or hats, are made from open celled foam polyurethane by stretching a sheet of the material to an increase in area of at least 5% to orient the crystals therein compressing the stretched material under a pressure of at least 5 pounds per sq. inch while heating the material to at least 50 DEG C., maintaining said heat and pressure for up to ten minutes and finally recovering the resultant porous article. The increase in area is preferably at least 25% and the decrease in thickness preferably at least 75%. The foam material may incorporate a woven or non-woven fabric which may be bonded thereto by heat or a suitable binder or several layers of foam may be bonded and used. The material may be stretched monoaxially (Figs. 1-3, not shown) or biaxially (Figs. 4a-4c, not shown) prior to compression. Suitable backing fabrics are woven or nonwoven nylon, woven "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark), "Dynel" (Registered Trade-Mark) or cotton and suitable binders are vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers with vinyl acetate, per se or as a latex; alkyl acrylate and/or methacrylate (e.g. methyl, ethyl 2-ethylhexyl, acrylate or methacrylate) polymers and copolymers with vinyl acetate, vinylchloride or acrylamide, per se or as a latex; alkyl resin; polyethylacrylate-butylacrylate copolymers; or polybutadiene/styrene latex rubber copolymers.ALSO:Shoe uppers, or hats, are made from open celled foam polyurethane by stretching a sheet of the material to an increase in area of at least 5% to orient the crystals therein compressing the stretched material under a pressure of at least 5 pounds per sq. inch while heating the material to at least 50 DEG C., maintaining said heat and pressure for up to ten minutes and finally recovering the resultant porous article. The increase in area is preferably at least 25% and the decrease in thickness preferably at least 75%. The foam material may incorporate a woven or non-woven fabric which may be bonded thereto by heat or a suitable binder or several layers of foam may be bonded and used. The material may be stretched monoaxially or biaxially prior to compression. To form a shoe upper, Fig. 9 not shown, a sheet (18) of foam material, optionally covered by a sheet (19) of woven fabric, is clamped over a female mould cavity (20) by a ring (22) and drawn into the cavity and subsequently compressed by a ram (21). A hat may be similarly made. A patterned mould may be used to provide a decorative finish on the article. After moulding, a foot opening is cut in the upper which is stitched or cemented to an insole in known ways. Suitable backing fabrics are woven or non-woven nylon, woven "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark), "Dynel" (Registered Trade Mark) or non-woven cotton.
